I would have my kids change their names every single day.

[–] Clusterfck@lemmy.sdf.org 34 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Joe, Jo, Jeau, Jeauau, Joh, Geo, Geoe, Jon, John, Geon, Jona, Jonah, Jeaunah

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 21 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Then change to and let them figure out how to put that into writing.

[–] ChapulinColorado@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Forgot Geodude

[–] PeleSpirit@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago

And change them to what the people making these laws go by, no matter the gender.

[–] Gingerlegs@lemmy.world 64 points 2 years ago

“So we can put them on a list” more like it

This feels more like a scholastic version of malicious compliance. Since the bill requires parents to be notified if a student wants to go by a different name (obviously aimed squarely at outing trans and enby kids), school admin decided to cover their bases and say "fine, we'll do it for every last little bit, nicknames, etc".

[–] OneWomanCreamTeam@sh.itjust.works 42 points 2 years ago (2 children)

The school is doing this because they're required by the state to. It isn't malicious compliance. They're literally required to report every single kid that wants to go by a nickname.

It's an enormous inconvenience for teachers, (who are already drowning in their workload) but the state doesn't care so long as it makes life harder for trans and nonbinary kids.

I'm guessing this is in Florida, but there might be one or two more states that are pulling this shit too.

[–] blackn1ght@feddit.uk 14 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Sounds like the kids should overwhelm the school with new nickname requests several times a day.

I think it was in Iowa actually.

[–] GlendatheGayWitch@lib.lgbt 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

There has been talk banning pronouns, which would cause chaos in schools. That would mean that these words couldn't be said in schools: I, me, you, him, her, his, hers, mine, yours, it, its, they, them, theirs, he, she, one, this, these, that, who, and which among many others.

Speaking in a classroom would become very difficult avoiding the list of banned words.

[–] raptir@lemm.ee 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

That plan sounds double-plus-ungood

Does anyone know a SysAdmin for Infinite Campus? They should submit a feature request where it links to lists of names, nicknames, dictionaries, etc., and parents can just select all, allowing their kid to be called whatever the f they want. Or maybe just all the letters and a checkbox for "Any combination of the following characters."

[–] III@lemmy.world 18 points 2 years ago (2 children)

public boolean isValidNickname(String name) { return true; }

fixed.

[–] pomodoro_longbreak@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

What if I don't want to be a complex type. What if I want to be a char

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 14 points 2 years ago (2 children)

You can identify as a char array all you want, but when you die and they dig up your type, they're going to see a string.

[–] postmateDumbass@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

In the end, everyone gets null terminated.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern 4 points 2 years ago

I just want to take a moment to note that not only can it be harder than you think, anthropologists actually really fuckin love finding corpses of people that defy gender norms.

There was a Viking warrior they didn't realize was a woman until recently and they're still losing their shit about Shieldmaidens and whatnot. Another had a couple's burial that Old Fogeys just assumed was a man and a woman until some Young Whippersnapper noticed they were both dudes.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

My son wants to be called by his nickname, which is ' UNION SELECT username, password FROM users WHERE 1=1, is that ok?

They should allow power users to input regexes.

Image Transcription:

X/Twitter post by user Senator Liz Bennett @LizBennettIowa reading: '"Yes, hello, are these the parents of Kimberly Reynolds? We are required to tell you that your child has requested to use the gender neutral nickname of 'Kim.'"' Attached is a screenshot from an email reading: 'Dear [redacted]

In accordance with Senate File 496, we are required to inform you of students who are requesting to go by a nickname or name that is something other than what is listed in Infinite Campus.

Today, Joseph requested that he be called Joe in class.

However, because that nickname was not provided in Infinite Campus, we need your permission in order to grant the request. Please complete this form to grant consent and get the correct nickname approved.

Thank you for your support,'

Thank you, fellow human 🤖

[–] obinice@lemmy.world 25 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Haha, what backwards ass country is that from?

I know I shouldn't laugh, people in places like that have it tough, it's just still kinda wild that we live in such a modern world and yet there's places that might as well be the middle ages again, usually thanks to religious cults.

We got caught slipping

[–] x4740N@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

At this point I'm fine with encouraging americans to go the French resolution route against the bigots turning that country to hell hell

The needs of the many outweighs the needs of the few through the bigots have voided their right to be considered of those needs unless they cease their bigotry

Ahh Christianity, how will it degrade itself today?

[–] III@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

To be fair, this is kind of tame compared to the more common school shooting / sexual assault news we are used to hearing. Still stupid as fuck but at least Joe is alive and unraped.

[–] Ataraxia@lemm.ee 7 points 2 years ago

That's a low bar

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 24 points 2 years ago

Just as the founding fathers intended.

[–] lolola@lemmy.blahaj.zone 21 points 2 years ago

I've had multiple language classes where we picked nicknames commonly used in the language of study to help us practice (like José in Spanish class). You think all those count too?

[–] DarthBueller@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Has anyone thought about completely overwhelming their system with name changes every class? The student could pick a different name every period.

[–] wild@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago (2 children)

The problem with that is that the "system" is teachers.

[–] DarthBueller@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago

Right. They're not the ones responsible for it, but they can help end it by maliciously complying and publicizing the government overreach at every opportunity.

[–] III@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yep, sadly those responsible for this idiocy would be unaffected by this form of protest.

[–] DarthBueller@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Just imagine the media attention that would be garnered if thousands of students at many different schools adopting a new gender neutral nickname on a daily basis for months on end. Or entire student bodies laying on the floor refusing to do anything, for months on end, until there was sensible gun reform/teachers unarmed etc. School disciplinary policies aren't able to cope with mass disobedience, they're designed to address the conduct of individuals and very small groups, not the majority of a student body, and media eats this shit up. I could see more impact coming from an entire generation of youth going on school strike than almost anything else I can think of.

And it would be easy to shape the messaging to be directed at the state capitol, not the teachers.

EDIT: Though perhaps it would be impossible, given that the very real urban/rural divide means that you'd only have urban/suburban students participating en masse, enabling the right media machine to be able to write it off as a liberal indoctrination/stunt.

Does this mean that I can finally let my child go to school with the nickname Giant Schlong as long as I fill out the form?

[–] audiomodder@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I’m from Iowa. Liz Bennett is an amazing Senator and we’re better off for having her.

[–] ChapulinColorado@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago

That's Elizabeth for you. Her SF 496 form for the nickname "Liz" has not been approved yet.

[–] ninekeysdown@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It's only a matter of time before the students start to exploit that system :D

[–] ChapulinColorado@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago

Wait Joe? I meant Joey sorry! Can you please file the paperwork again?

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago

Joe mama, haha gottem!

[–] snooggums@kbin.social 9 points 2 years ago

More like Finite Campus.

[–] Godnroc@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago

"Please add a single asterisk as an approved nickname."

[–] regalia 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

As ridiculous as this is, why are they submitting forms at all and not just having his kid say "call me Joe"

[–] _Lost_@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Because the new law requires it to be in writing
