So, for privacy and security reasons, I use a VPN. This is normally Mullvad (with DAITA and quantum resistance enabled), but I have ProtonVPN, Windscribe, and Orbot handy in case something doesn't work.

However, lately I've noticed my connections being blocked. This is across three different ISPs: Sky, Virgin, and Wifinity. I have tried all three VPNs and Orbot, and I have tried several protocols (WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, Stealth, and of course SOCKS5) to no avail.

The logical solution would be to use a bridge in Orbot, but the button seems to have been removed. Also, by using Orbot, I will not be protected by my DNS.

I am currently using iOS, but my other machines run Linux and I will be getting a GrapheneOS phone in the near future.

Can anyone help?

Photo: Getty Images President-elect Donald Trump refused to wish a Merry Christmas to the 37 people who recently had their death sentences commuted by President Joe Biden. On Wednesday (December 25), Trump marked Christmas Day by telling the 37 former death row inmates to “GO TO HELL” after Biden commuted their sentences, per The Hill. … Continued

Feel really guilty, my one family member gave me this. I don't use much google stuff anymore and I really dislike the company as it gets more intrusive. Is there anything I can do with this thing besides give it away? Nothing is worse than getting a gift that you can't use.

Summary

In 2024, conservative-leaning online spaces emphasizing traditional masculinity gained mainstream influence, driven by figures like Joe Rogan and trends like the “tradwife” movement.

Platforms like X, under Elon Musk’s ownership, became hubs for anti-“woke” sentiment, while podcasting further amplified right-wing ideas.

This cultural shift mirrored Trump’s election victory and reflected backlash against progressive gender norms.

Though some view these spaces as promoting traditional values, critics warn of growing misogyny and radicalization in the “manosphere.”

The rise of such spaces highlights deepening political polarization online.

Hello,

I learned about struct in Rust, so I just wanted to share what I have learned.

what is struct in Rust? It's the same as what's in C language. eg,

struct Point {
    x: i32,
    y: i32,
}

that's it this is how we define a struct. we can create all sort of struct with different data types. ( here I have used only i32 but you can use any data type you want)

now Rust also have which we find in OOPs languages like Java. it's called method. here is how we can define methods for a specific struct in Rust.

impl Point {
    fn print_point(&self) {
        println!("x: {} y: {}", self.x, self.y);
    }
}

see it's that easy. tell me if I forgot about something I should include about struct in Rust.

China on Friday slapped sanctions on seven US companies after Washington's approval last week of a $571.3 million military aid package to Taiwan, which Beijing said infringed on its "sovereignty and territory".

Last Friday, US President Joe Biden authorised the drawdown of up to $571.3 million for defence assistance to the self-ruled island, which China regards as its own territory. Washington's actions "interfere in China's internal affairs, and undermine China's sovereignty and territorial integrity", the Chinese foreign ministry said as it announced the sanctions.

The statement also hit out at Washington's 2025 defence budget, which includes a security cooperation initiative with Taiwan, as well as calls for strengthened defence industrial cooperation with Taipei.

Beijing will freeze the China assets of US defence companies Insitu, Hudson Technologies, Saronic Technologies, Aerkomm and Oceaneering International, as well as Raytheon's Canada and Australia subsidiaries, the ministry said. The sanctions, which kick in on Friday, also prohibit the targeted companies from doing business with organisations and individuals inside China.

The United States does not officially recognise Taiwan diplomatically but it is the self-ruled island's strategic ally and largest supplier of weapons. China, which has said it will use force to bring Taiwan under its control if necessary, has intensified pressure on the island in recent years.

It has staged three rounds of major military drills since Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te came to power in May. Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning warned the United States' support for Taiwan "will only burn itself". "China will continue to take all necessary measures to firmly defend its sovereignty, security and development interests," Mao said at a press conference.

Friday's announcement follows previous sanctions declared earlier this month against 13 US firms for selling arms to Taiwan.

China’s leader Xi Jinping wants the recent spree of mass killings that shocked the country not to happen again. He ordered local governments to prevent future “extreme cases.”

The attacks, where drivers mow down people on foot or knife-wielding assailants stab multiple victims, are not new in China. But the latest surge drew attention.

Local officials were quick to vow to examine all sorts of personal disputes that could trigger aggression, from marital troubles to disagreements over inheritance.

However, the increasing reach into people’s private lives raises concerns at a time when the Chinese state has already tightened its grip over all social and political aspects in the East Asian nation.

[...]

'Revenge on Society Crimes’ - this is how people in China label these attacks.

In November alone, three took place: A man struck people at an elementary school in Hunan province, wounding 30, after suffering investment losses. A student who failed his examination stabbed and killed eight at a vocational school in the city of Yixing. The most victims, 35 people, resulted from a man mowing down a crowd in the southern city of Zhuhai, supposedly upset over his divorce.

“On the surface, it seems like there are individual factors, but we see there’s a common link,” Wu Qiang, a former political science professor, said. “This link is, in my personal opinion, every person has a feeling of injustice. They feel deeply that this society is very unfair and they can’t bear it anymore.”

Since 2015, Chinese police have targeted human rights lawyers and non-profit advocacy groups, jailing many, while keeping tight surveillance on others, effectively destroying the civil society that had been active from the early 2000s to 2010s.

Wu was fired from Tsinghua University after conducting fieldwork during the 2014 Occupy protests in Hong Kong. He says police officers have been regularly stationed outside his home in Beijing since last year.

[...]

A decade ago, media outlets could report an incident as it developed and even share a suspect’s name. Nowadays, it’s rarely possible.

During the 24 hours before the death toll was released in the Zhuhai slaying, state censors were quick to remove any videos of the incident and eyewitness accounts shared online. In the case of the Hunan elementary school attack, authorities shared the number of the wounded only after the court sentencing, nearly a month later.

A tally of violent attacks can be documented in other countries; notably, the U.S. had 38 mass killings so far this year, according to an Associated Press database. But in China, a lack of public data makes it hard to decipher mass killing trends.

[...]

Luqiu believes the government may be enforcing censorship thinking it will prevent copycats from imitating such crimes.

“Things will only become more and more strict,” she predicted. For the Chinese state, “the only method to deal with it is to strengthen control.”

[...]

At least a dozen local government notices, from small towns to big cities, [are now] announcing actions in response.

In eastern Anhui province, a ruling Communist Party leader inspected a middle school, a local police station, and even the warehouse of a chemical factory where he urged the workers to “ferret out any hidden risks.” He said they must “thoroughly and meticulously investigate and resolve conflicts and disputes,” including in families, marriages and neighborhoods.

[...]

However, many expressed worry over how such disputes will be detected.

“I think we’re at the beginning of a vicious cycle,” said Lynette Ong, a professor at the University of Toronto and author of “Outsourcing Repression: Everyday State Power in Contemporary China.” “If you nip the conflict in its bud, you’d imagine the system then would impose a lot of pressure ... on schools, enterprises and factories.”

[...]

The new announcements reminded Ong of China’s strict policies during the COVID-19 pandemic. Neighborhood committees, the lowest rung of government, set up fences and barriers in front of buildings to control entry and exit and broke into homes in extreme cases to disinfect the apartments of people who had caught the virus.

Eventually, people protested en masse.

“If we see non-sensible measures being introduced, you’ll be met by resistance and anger and grievances from the people, and it’s going to feed into this vicious cycle where more extreme measures are going to be brought,” she said.

It's been getting a lot of quality of life upgrades recently and it's sad it's not more known by lemmy users. It handles a lot of things better than the lemmy devs envisioned in the lemmyUI and it improves integration of things like loops etc.

It's become my favorite web frontend as of late, so I wanted to spread the knowledge around. All kudos to @ptz@dubvee.org

We host our own instance in https://t.lemmy.dbzer0.com/ if you're from lemmy.dbzer0.com and if you're from another instance, you can try it from https://tesseract.dubvee.org/

Summary

Donald Trump’s proposed mandate to end federal telework and fire non-compliant employees faces major obstacles, including widespread union contracts protecting remote work.

About 56% of federal workers are covered by collective bargaining agreements, many of which include telework provisions.

Additionally, a record 10% of federal jobs are fully remote, and many agencies lack sufficient office space to accommodate full-time in-office work due to post-pandemic real estate reductions.

Critics argue that enforcing this mandate would be costly, contradicting Trump’s goals to reduce government spending and personnel.

I've been using Lemmy since the Reddit exodus. I haven't looked back since, but I miss a lot of mental health communities that I haven't been able to find replacements for here on Lemmy. Does anyone know any cool mental health communities that are somewhat active?

I've been waiting until after Christmas day to make this post, but some of our communities recently have had a lot of noise and upset over someone that uses neopronouns that most people are unfamiliar with.

So I want to make this clear. A persons pronouns are to be respected. This is true when the user is using neopronouns that you're unfamiliar with. It's true even if you think someone is trolling. Pronouns are not rewards for good behaviour. They aren't only to be respected when you like the person you're interacting with, or if their pronouns "make sense" to you. Trolls, spammers, twitter users, it doesn't matter who they are, your options are to respect their pronouns, or to not engage with them.

I really want to re-iterate the importance of this. Gender diverse folk are undermined, invalidated and questioned at every step of our lives. As a community, we need to be working to undo that, not creating more of it, and that means there is no space for treating pronouns (including neopronouns) as a reward for good behaviour.

This isn't a free reign for trolls and spammers. The rules still apply. Trolling, spamming, etc will continue to be dealt with, but it's not an excuse to act as if respecting someones pronouns is optional.

Summary

The next two years will feature 38 gubernatorial races across the U.S., with major implications for national politics and key policy debates post-2024.

In 2025, New Jersey and Virginia will hold early races, with both likely to shape party strategies under Trump’s second term. Virginia’s contest could elect its first female governor, while New Jersey sees crowded primaries.

In 2026, 36 states, including key battlegrounds like Arizona, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, will hold elections, with 16 open seats due to term limits.

These races could significantly influence party direction and future presidential elections.
