There's been an influx of content surrounding lemmy here. Some of it is open ended:

  • "What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?"
  • "Lemmy, what do you call users of Lemmy?"

And these are a-ok! There's also been a lot of questions like

  • "How do I block a user?"
  • "How do I join a community on a different instance"

These aren't open ended (at least, relatively). They are objective based, and just need a resolution, rather than discussion. These sort of questions are more relevant to !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml.

I know there's also questions like "What are you guys doing when there’s multiple communities for the same thing across instances?". I'm inclined to let those stay, there is lots of opportunity for discussion. It's a game of discretion from a moderation perspective, but I assume most can easily guess what is cold hard support.

At least from me, moderation of support posts has been sporadic at best, despite the long standing rule. I will begin redirecting these questions to !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml, however I'm of course willing to listen to the community here if that's not what is wanted, as well as other feedback.

edit: support posts will now be removed, not locked

I'm a farmer in San Diego County. In fallbrook/ temecula, there's a truck weigh station that's full of ICE operatives near me. Today, they blocked off the entrance to the only road that leads to a bunch of farms, including mine. I personally have a family farm, but I know my neighbors and their employees, and they're hard-working everyday people regardless of their immigration status.

To make a long story short, how do I legally fuck with ICE while they do a raid?

Edit: the only thing I can think of is recording and doing a verbal protest. I could try to share the footage with the local news. Given the current political climate, I'm not sure if they'd care. I don't want to see the people I've existed next to dissappear.

It's here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/MbUzWLDT73swafxf7?g_st=ac

If you know someone who works at Moon Farm Nurseries, fucking tell them RIGHT NOW to lay low. They're compromised.

Edit 2: they took everyone. The fields up and down our road are empty. I couldn't even get a picture because I had to drive past like nothing was happening. Fuck.

Calling professional and hobby artists:

I'm commissioning a small bit of line art from a friend for non-commercial use and want to make sure that they are fairly compensated for it. My friend has a habit of trying to offer "mate rates" and under-valuing their work.

For something like voice over, I can refer to SAG rates sheet to quantify that I can't afford projects with voice acting. Are there any similar things for line art/simple drawings that I can refer to, or at least guidelines that people can offer, so that I can force them to take fair pay?

Context: The drawing in question is a medium-sized cartoon/fan-art of an existing character. It is limited to 3 colors so that it can be used to create stencils to airbrush onto a DIY greeting card.

I've tried all the "font detectors" online and none of them gave me the name of the actual font. They all looked kinda the same but they're not the same font. Could someone please identify it and let me know? Thank you in advance.

It can look dumb, but I always had this question as a kid, what physical principles would prevent this?

The point for this post is to start several (hopefully) interesting threads of weird hamster death stories because apparently these things never die naturally?

Made the move to Debian stable on my daily laptop over the weekend. Most of my home lab stuff is running Debian so I am not too green, but I never really tested a lot of stuff with it.

I brought by personal device into work today and didn't think about a VPN when setting it up. I have a few months left on Mullvad I am planning to use. Added their repo and installed the program.

Should I try to stray away from the practice when running Debian as a daily device? I never really deviated from the Debian repos on my home lab stuff, and I know the mantra of "Don't break Debian". Just wondering what you can do and shouldn't do. I am planning on setting up a VPN on my home network sometime soon, and just sending the traffic through that via OpenVPN.

Anyone else unnerved by the whole 'continuing as normal' vibe and also guy on stage chanting "they're not like us" to crowd that effectively voted in a fascist and rapist who also is sitting in the crowd. (I know who Kendrick Lamar is and am a fan of hip hop) "The revolution will be televised" what the actual fuck bro :(

I was a big fan of Sarah Silverman before she dropped a huge rant about how genocide is okay because the kids would otherwise grow up to be terrorrirsts and then locked comments for a year on IG. I got my post deleted off her subreddit back then when I posted screenshots for not being relevant to her. Kinda bothered me that she said all that shit seriously and then just covered it up.

Her being friends with Jay Johnston makes sense.

I had already stopped watching h3 years ago but what hes become in the last few years has made me feel a lot better about that decision.

It's 2025, and mfs are still making land claims based off religion and bs from thousands of years ago. Feel like I'm living in crusader kings.

i long-distance dated a girl when we were high school aged who lived in myanmar. (i sadly lost contact with her years ago when i made new social media accs)

she learned english as a little girl and only spoke burmese with her family and at school. however im assuming she didn’t read or write in it that much and most of the time, spoke to me and her online friends (which would be in english).

i remember google translating “hello, how are you?” or something like that and she told me to please not type in Burmese because she couldn’t read it without using Google translate to find out what i wrote in english.

while she can understand spoken burmese as well as speak it herself (she kinda has to living in myanmar), she can’t read it and told me she struggled in school for that reason.

naturally, she preferred english. i also know of people who speak 2 languages but either can’t read/write the one language and only speaks it or has trouble spelling words.

i think i knew a spanish speaker in the us who spelled words like “como te llamas” as “como te yamas” (not as a slang spelling, he was just trying to spell it)

I’m still fairly young and hear many women my age making certain references, using slang, or memes related to the U.S. and American culture.

Sometimes, I don’t understand the references though, as I do speak English but grew up where people did not.

My parents grew up in the US and speak English but of course, only really know the pop culture of their day.

Does anyone else (especially people who grew up somewhere else) not understand Anglophone slang or pop culture?

Everybody else will act normal and all prior evidence of their existence will also persist like normal.

Edit: For clarification, the people are actually missing but everybody is essentially hypnotized to not notice. Even if specifically asked about the missing people they will pretend like everything is fine. So everybody goes on about their day normaly.

I guess for most people it would be pretty much immediately if their significant other isn't there in the morning and for some fringe isolated cases it might take forever.

I guess best case for me would be around 4 hours on a work day during lunch break seeing a big crowd of people when it would finally click.

Worst case would be probably 5 days when I'm mostly working from home office.

i know of some bi/multilingual families in the us who'd talk to each other in their native tongue when they didn't want the kids to know what they were saying.

i speak my dad's native spanish as well as dad's learned portuguese, but i don't speak the polish or norwegian from the other side of mom's family. (she's also latina but doesn't natively speak spanish)

however, i'm learning the two i don't know, and practicing polish (the language my mom does know) with her

Stuff like a pretty case with slots for optical drives, a laptop with a shitton of ports and all-day battery life or anything else that seems to go against the trends.

This thread is for complaining about how you can't find it and (maybe) finding it thanks to someone else.

Sometimes I see on American TV that once a year (I think) they try to figure out how much tax they owe and send off a cheque. How does this really work?

Id struggle very much to calculate this. Do you keep receipts for everything?

Is there no system where taxes are automatically taken out of your monthly wages? Id be interested to hear some examples of what you pay, and how you calculate it all if possible.

In the UK pretty much every has monthly tax taken automatically, unless you are self employed.

The way it works for me for example last month I made:

£2282.58 and £435.92 was deducted. £247 in tax and 98.77 national insurance. £90.15 went to my pension.

So what would your payslip look like? No deductions? Or am I just getting the wrong idea from America TV shows?

Thanks

For example, Britain's national mapping organisation's brand is associated in our national consciousness with going to a small shop in a quaint village to get a map showing how to walk up a mountain. It's called Ordnance Survey. If that sounds like Artillery Research to you, that's because the project started because the king wanted to know how to accurately bomb Scotland.
