RULES (updated 01/22/25)

  1. Be respectful: no harassment, hate speech, bigotry, and/or trolling. To be concise, disrespect is defined by escalation.
  2. Encourage conversation in your OP. This means including heavily implicative subject matter when you can and also engaging in your thread when possible. You won't be punished for trying.
  3. Avoid controversial topics (politics or societal debates come to mind, though we are not saying not to talk about anything that resembles these). There's a guide in the protocol book offered as a mod model that can be used for that; it's vague until you realize it was made for things like the rule in question. At least four purple answers must apply to a "controversial" message for it to be allowed.
  4. Keep it clean and SFW: No illegal content or anything gross and inappropriate. A rule of thumb is if a recording of a conversation put on another platform would get someone a COPPA violation response, that exact exchange should be avoided when possible.
  5. No solicitation such as ads, promotional content, spam, surveys etc. The chart redirected to above applies to spam material as well, which is one of the reasons its wording is vague, as it applies to a few things. Again, a "spammy" message must be applicable to four purple answers before it's allowed.
  6. Respect privacy as well as truth: Don’t ask for or share any personal information or slander anyone. A rule of thumb is if something is enough info to go by that it "would be a copyright violation if the info was art" as another group put it, or that it alone can be used to narrow someone down to 150 physical humans (Dunbar's Number) or less, it's considered an excess breach of privacy. Slander is defined by intentional utilitarian misguidance at the expense (positive or negative) of a sentient entity. This often links back to or mixes with rule one, which implies, for example, that even something that is true can still amount to what slander is trying to achieve, and that will be looked down upon.

What do you mean "anyone else"? I was in the shower with you. I feel so ignored!

[–] FourPacketsOfPeanuts@lemmy.world 27 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Can you guys keep it down? I'm trying to sleep on the loo

[–] Zier@fedia.io 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Geezus Richard, I told you to use the down stairs bog when we were showering! FFS

Richard is a really big dick!

[–] adhocfungus@midwest.social 20 points 1 week ago (2 children)

No, because the monsters would get me.

[–] Siethron@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Monsters don't eat wet human

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

All humans are wet on the inside

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

but the ones wet on the outside are icky ok.

im a picky eater dont judge.

[–] MelonYellow@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

Same. As a horror movie junkie, there are an abundance of shower scenarios that would pop into my head whilst in the dark.

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I split the difference. Shower with a candle in the room. Transparent shower curtain.

[–] jaschen@lemm.ee 4 points 1 week ago

This is how all horror scenes start with white people and their candles in the bathroom.

i'm autistic and have quite the sensibilities, including to light. taking a shower is something that has always been extremely calming to me, it shuts a lot of my brain down, including, sometimes, my anxiety disorder part. taking a shower in the dark is the closest thing to a state of pure inner bliss i can reach easily.

[–] sp3tr4l@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Also autistic, I very much enjoy baths in darkness or very low light.

Poor man's isolation tank.

[–] feathercloaked@beehaw.org 4 points 1 week ago

exactly! :D

[–] Atherel@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I have ADHD and it's similar for me. What also helps is background rain noise. Did you try that? Im using cozy time on my PC as it also can play additional relaxing music and has a pomodoro timer.

[–] feathercloaked@beehaw.org 2 points 1 week ago

it's not enough for me. i have heavy rain currently and while it does calm me down, it's only one sense that is being stimulated. it's really the water running all over me that does the trick and the light of lights makes it that much easier to just disappear in my mind.

[–] Alice@beehaw.org 1 points 1 week ago

I wish autism made me sensible :p

[–] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 11 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Oh yeah.

My bathroom light is motion activated. The sensor doesn't see into the shower, so if I don't wave at it every few minutes the light goes out.

A lot of the time I don't bother. Super relaxing.

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Only when it’s voluntary. I once had the power go out while I was in the shower. My thirty-something ass instantly aged into an octogenarian convinced he was breaking a hip on the way to open the bathroom door.

[–] SomeAmateur@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Not complete darkness. I got a nice warm led night light (these ones, love em) just bright enough that I can see what I'm doing. But yeah going spa mode after a long cold day is very nice

[–] Carvex@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

It's good for forehead tension headaches also. I like to sit and stare straight into the stream of water in the dark, tends to help overload nerve input to ignore pain bit better.

I would love to try but intrusive thought won't let...

[–] I_Miss_Daniel@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

Opposite. I built a second temporary shower under the window (lined the wall with clear plastic for visiting rellies that can't step into the tub) - it's nice to shower in the sunshine.

[–] sasquash@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 week ago

I do it when I have a really bad hangover

[–] shinigamiookamiryuu@lemm.ee 7 points 1 week ago

Showering in the dead of night? Yes, that's relaxing. Showering in the dead of night with all the bathroom lights off? Few things would unsettle me more.

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

I do it if I'm taking a shower just before bed.

[–] Shawdow194@fedia.io 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I knew a chick who would also put on blind fold sleep mask and earplugs... they seemed to like it but I've never tried

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

It’s like their own sensory deprivation chamber

[–] Dorkyd68@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Everyday day after work. I have a "nightlight" that I turn on. Other that that all my showers are in darkness. I think it's a way for me to decompress after being bombarded by artificial light for 10+ throughout my work day. Took me until I was 35 to realize how sensitive i was to light, especially artificial

[–] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 5 points 1 week ago

I shall attempt

[–] AmbiguousProps@lemmy.today 4 points 1 week ago

It's my favorite way to shower. I don't know if it's my ADHD or what, but it's super relaxing, one of the few times I can actually feel that sensation.

Only if I bring my life size bathclown with me with the chefs knife attachment and realistic glowing eyes.

[–] psyklax@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 week ago

Yeah, I do that. I also soak in the tub with ears submerged for audio blunting as well. Very sensory-deprivation. Quite relaxing.

[–] Nemo@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 week ago

yes, I'm blind without my glasses anyway

[–] Yingwu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I do it everyday actually! Nice to see someone else doing it too

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

To me it would be weirdly slippy and fally and weird.

[–] FooBarrington@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

But imagine the surprise of whoever finds you! Really makes it worth it.

[–] edisondotme@monero.town 3 points 1 week ago

Yes, reminds me of back when I was inside my mother's womb.

[–] daggermoon@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Not so much now because I get sleepy. But I used to love it. Probably will again some day.

[–] Alice@beehaw.org 2 points 1 week ago

An old friend told me he did that to cope with dysphoria.

Once I was in the shower with the lights on and I slipped. When I got up I somehow snagged my arm on the faucet and made a deep gash.

Now every time I think of trying it, I imagine what kind of violent shit I'd do to myself if I slipped and couldn't see.

I do this if I take one before bed. Relaxes me and also helps my eyes acclimate to the darkness

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

When I tried that, I felt weird, like, my eyes are open but it doesn't help.

After a while, it feels like the abyss looks you in the eyes

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Haven’t gotten to do it in ages since my current bathroom has no windows but showering in the late afternoon or just at sunset with just the smallest bit of sunlight peeking through the (closed!) blinds is relaxing, especially in the summer.

Being clean and having wet hair while the summer day’s heat starts to settle and your day winds down is magic.

[–] JRaccoon@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 week ago

Yes, I thought I was the only one! I don't remember when or why I started doing it, but I'm so used to it by now that it feels weird if I don't turn the lights off.

Recently I got a new showerhead and it has a dim light built-in and uses the water flow for power. So no complete darkness anymore but the dim light doesn't bother me and it's actually useful.
