I moved to a house (my first) recently and we bought full size chocolate bars and beef jerky sticks to give out (in case someone doesn't want chocolate).

Not a single child came. I didn't see or hear anyone under 20 the entire night. We all stayed out on the porch for hours.

The only chocolate bar we gave out was to the pizza lady.

Does nobody trick-or-treat? We have kids in the neighborhood. I see them rising bikes during the day.

How was everyone else's Halloween?

Edit: We got one! Long after trick or treating hours were over, a little cowboy knocked on our door. I gave him like 5 candy bars and 2 jerky sticks. He was very happy. His dad stopped in a car and he got out to knock on our door. I reckon it had to do with the fake neon LED "trick or treat" sign we hung on the porch.

Please just read without judging me, I'm up to conversation as long as you don't tell "you can do it!" Or "man up bitch" I don't need that type of dialogue, I've been beaten enough, even by my own family.

35 M.

My depression and loneliness had fucked me over enough last year and since I quit my abusive job (underpaid, boss screaming at job, no benefits, hated everyone, shit conditions) things aren't getting better. The fact I can't get a job even at a fast food sucks (some of you Americans complain about having that job, you're LUCKY to have that)... Job apps don't work or always ask for experience, I can't even get an Amazon warehouse job (I've seen people that can't even talk the language here well getting that job, so I guess I'm cursed). Nobody calls and no, you can't just knock random doors of warehouses expecting to give you a job, even worse if you're an immigrant.

My mother has enough of me living with them and I can't blame her I'm old ass virgin dude that will never get married but seems that everything is against me and I'll never move out. The world decided to just fuck me over again and again. The fact I can't get a job is killing me. I don't have money for studies and this country doesn't offer trade jobs education for people like me I've never been a good student anyways, I need the money NOW. Shit, I controlled this shitty town web page and hasn't been updated in a year. The job help is a joke for anyone like me. The only reason I'm not sleeping under a bridge is because of my mother.

Sometimes I google painless ways to die.

My father sometimes calls me saying I should go back to him in our home country, leave Europe, but for what? He lives in a shitty place, he's unemployed too and barely eats despite being 10x more of a man that i am... That would be a death sentence for someone like me. I have no escape anywhere.

Sorry if this post bothers you in any way, but I needed this. I have zero human contact with anyone besides my family.

To be honest, the case is still the original one, but almost every other part has since been replaced. Now, I’ve taken it back to the shop where I bought it 20 years ago and asked them to upgrade the motherboard, CPU, and memory - the last of the original parts.

So, is it still the same computer?

I also like that I can just keep replacing parts on an existing product rather than buying an entirely new device each time. That's exceedingly rare feature these days.

YouTube? Deleted comment. Twitter? Banned, Reddit? Shadow banned and blocked Xbox live? You get kicked out online mode despite you are PAYING for it. You can't express your anger or hate towards other people without some kind of freedom.

No I'm not saying that RACISM or serious accusations should be allowed, but a simple "fuck u" gets you eliminated. Is depressing.

I thought this would be relevant now more than ever (after having secured permission to ask about it) since there are three days left until Halloween, and after that, pre-Christmas-season will have begun (unless you consider Thanksgiving to be separate from that), and people will begin asking for things for Christmas.

I in no way want to imply I shame people for being needy and shamelessly asking for donations. If there are three guarantees in life, it's death, taxes, and people being economically down on themselves or being helpless in the face of their desires (because it's almost the same thing as the first two). It's just a part of life.

Every year, you will see a lot of beggars out and about, whether it's the guy with the bucket of cash and the bell at the store or that person who needs money given to them through "GoFundMe". I run a few services and the latter are quite common to have poured in by people, I find it hard to deny the request. The most common explanations are "my pet is sick", "I am homeless", and "I lost my job". Without a doubt, at least some of these people are telling the truth, but they get buried in with everyone else because there's no way to know. It's no different with homeless people who encounter you on the street, I know some people for years have advocated for some kind of system that separates homeless people based on their specifications, to intense backlash because people with their bias-charged minds think of it as a form of segregation for the unfortunate. Someone I know said they went to the Bahamas twice, eight years apart, and said they encountered the same homeless people taking advantage of tourists by using cosmetics to claim they have gruesome infected injuries and that they need treatment. People just don't know better.

This, in turn, causes them to have no choice but to develop an intense honor system full of competition, as in people will invalidate each others' issues, for example the person with a sick animal might say "your home was hit by a car, so what" and it becomes a rivalry. Some will resort to doing art for people, asking people to commission them, others will resort to scamming people, sometimes asking for people to pay first and then not granting what they promised, and occasionally you get pay-it-forward-esque schemes that are definitely intended to be helpful and address the issue but are very roundabout.

It's not a charged claim to say this happens with official organizations too. It's common for a location to have a dozen active donation organizations, things like GoodWill, the Salvation Army, and Catholic Charities. You will have some that are responsible with their money and some that have excuses in place to collect all the money. And I'm not saying specific names, but often they will defame each other, so all those good and bad reviews you see about certain services reflect absolutely nothing.

Related to all of this, I often have to ask people on an individual level "what makes your plea stand out", as in "if there was a sign you could give that this money you're asking for is going to a good cause, what would that sign be". Some will say they have no such sign but that they can't afford to not receive money just because they have no sign. Some will say they have a sign but it turns out to be something that doesn't prove their point, for example someone once asked for money to send his daughter to school and I asked for a sign, and he gave a picture of his daughter and said "I have this picture of my daughter, that's proof she's struggling to get into school". And some will do things like purposefully be a detriment to themselves to serve as the proof. You'd think one of these days someone would claim they got turned into a newt and needed a small loan of a million dollars to get hospital treatment for it.

It's so frustrating because there are genuinely unlucky people out there but people have been lenient for so long out of fear of causing segregation of people in need and now it's clique-based as a result, the people who have the most luck with donations are the people who have amassed the most popularity, which renders the actual reason someone needs a favor done to be redundant (there was even a famous case a while back where someone on "GoFundMe" asked for a jug of milk and got a thousand dollars). And it's not like someone could be hired to just go to peoples' homes to verify they need money like the people at Guinness who verify world records. So especially in a world where actual major powers of the world have gotten in on all the scammy action, all advice or two cents that can be offered for would-be donors and/or donation seekers would be appreciated, aside from, of course, preferring to donate to people in person, this is not always possible. Maybe something like have something akin to "GoFundMe" where accounts are owned by local towns/villages/suburbs instead of individuals and have the towns do the approval process before adding them to the list, I don't know. Maybe other people have better ways of coming up with a solution. And feel free to ask for donations for your own issues (as well as to pin this, maybe it can help).

I told a guy today "you look so fashionable!" because he did, good looking guy literally young enough to be my kid, in a great outfit that looked intentional, and got back a "thank you!" Because he knew I was not chatting him up, just legitimately complimenting him. I could always do this with women, but not men.

Just happy, I am happy about it.

I just "rediscovered" ICP through the article about Violent J's support for Harris. And I thought, "How did their music sound again?"

And now I'm stuck.

Send Faygo. WHOOP WHOOP.

I've been working at a soul-sucking job that I have to drive 2 hours a day and I don't like for 1.5 years. I do alright. I was a teacher and I want to get back into teaching because it's more purposeful and fulfilling.

My wife found out about a year ago that her father was in fact not her biological father. A few months later he died. This caused her trauma. My wife is a teacher as well, and she said she wanted to take a year off and go to therapy. I was not a fan of the idea, because we need 2 incomes to feed our 2 kids and fund her spending habits, but I agreed as long as we cut our spending and she focused on getting better. We inherited some money from her father and moved into his house and sold our old one for some money as well. I'm talking to a fiduciary to invest this money so it doesn't get spent and we have money for the future.

Last week I was offered a teaching a position. I was frustrated by the fact that I had to decline it, because we cannot afford the pay cut. If I don't get back in to it this year, my certification will lapse and I will have a hard time renewing it. I was devastated and explained to her my frustrations. I told her that taking a year off is not the norm, and that she hasn't been working on herself, she's been spending more money, adding to her hoard, and avoiding any sort of physical or emotional hardship. I told her that I gave up something that I wanted (and she wanted for me) so she could continue not working.

Next month she is flying from the midwest to Vancouver to see Taylor Swift with my oldest daughter. I told her today that it frustrates me that she is going through with it. I understand that she had a tough time and that this is a cool thing for them, but I wanted her to understand that it frustrates me that she gets to do this while I'm cutting back on things and declining a job I wanted. I told her to CONSIDER flipping the tickets for a profit of a few grand. She responded that it feels like I'm trying to ruin her good time with guilt and that she really is working on herself, but it's all internal, so I can't see it.

I just feels unfair and if I pressure her not to go, I'm going to be made into the bad guy. I'm in between a shit and a turd place.

What should be in butter? (hackertalks.com)
submitted 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) by jet@hackertalks.com to c/casualconversation@lemm.ee

I looked at my butter today, the ingredients are:

  • butter oil
  • milk powder

What the hell is butter oil? I tried googling it, but I get VERY contradictory results, nothing from a reputable source I could find.

Basically the title. The fact that we can read an encyclopedia entry on the economic history of the Netherlands from our phone is crazy. Scrolling over to a random island in the middle of the Atlantic to experience a virtual street tour is insane. There are even websites that let you see live security camera footage (shoutout to EarthCamTV). We have so much information that we take for granted.

After Reddit enshittified, they shutdown Secret Santa. Some people made a spiritual successor to it. I think Lemmy is a good place to promote it.

I always try to send at least a postcard. I missed it last year, so I really wanted to remember this year to sign up before the deadline.
