This is a showcase of combining vibe coding with the Fediverse and attempto controlled english (ace).

I'm fascinated by vibe coding, but I'm also highly critical of it. It fascinates me, because it enables people, who normally cannot code to be able to generate running code. What I don't like, is that it just isn't actual programming. It's closer to a wishing well. It fosters a quasi-magical understanding of programming and computer science, which is already too common in current society (I wrote a paper about it here: https://philpapers.org/rec/BINAKR). That's why, in my opinion, the Fediverse should set a counter-point here with something like a first-order logic language like ACE, which actually brings people closer to an actual understanding of computer science concepts like modeling and logic without hiding the complexity behind seemingly "magic", and could also result in better code.

The above demo shows a glimpse of how this could look like on the Fediverse. Imagine communities being able to form their own spaces on the social web through language! Simply using natural language will probably not be specific enough here. We always imagine everything getting much easier, but that's just the logic of digital capitalism that tries to sell us innovation as inventing yet a more easy way to get your coke handed to you, which can only lead to more and more environmental destruction. So, what will the language interface for the future digital look like? I think it will be more something like the semi-formalic language found in technical manuals, cooking recipes and judicial texts. Something like ace, in between coding, domain specific languages, modeling and natural language. And people who are experts at this and know the old technical stuff that no one understands anymore will be the new "coders". But maybe I'm wrong.

The State Department has shut down its office that sought to deal with misinformation and disinformation that Russia, China and Iran have been accused of spreading.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement Wednesday that he had closed what had been known as the Global Engagement Center because it had taken actions to restrict freedom of speech in the United States and elsewhere.

The center has been a frequent target of criticism from conservatives for calling out media and online reports that it said are biased or untruthful. At times, it has identified U.S. websites and social media accounts that it argued were amplifying misinformation, particularly related to the Russia-Ukraine war.

[...]

Congress had supported the center’s work, as had previous State Department leadership.

A comment by White House science adviser Michael Kratsios has gone viral after a speech in which he claimed U.S. technology can "manipulate time and space," prompting online speculation.

Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, made the remark during a policy address at the Endless Frontiers Retreat in Austin, Texas on April 14.

"Our technologies permit us to manipulate time and space. They leave distance annihilated, cause things to grow, and improve productivity," Kratsios said during prepared remarks published on the official White House website.

While the statement was likely intended as aspirational language about technological progress, it has since circulated widely online, with some interpreting the comment literally.

the EUVD comes with a holistic approach and aims for ensuring a high level of interconnection of information sources. It does so by leveraging the open-source software Vulnerability-Lookup which enables a quick correlation of vulnerabilities from multiple known sources. ... Utilising the Common Security Advisory Framework (CSAF), a standardised format for vulnerability advisories, the EUVD supports automation in the processing, consumption, and distribution of security advisories.

The EUVD collects and references vulnerability information collected from existing databases (such as MITRE’s CVE DB, GitHub's Advisory Database, JVN iPedia, GSD-Database), adds additional information via references to advisories and alerts issued by national CSIRTs, mitigation and patching guidelines published by vendors, and enriches it with exploited vulnerability markings (such as CISA KEV) and FIRST’s Exploit Prediction scores (EPSS).

(Note: ENISA has been tasked with establishing the EUVD as outlined in Article 12 of the NIS-2 Directive.)

Synology's telegraphed moves toward a contained ecosystem and seemingly vertical integration are certain to rankle some of its biggest fans, who likely enjoy doing their own system building, shopping, and assembly for the perfect amount of storage. "Pro-sumers," homelab enthusiasts, and those with just a lot of stuff to store at home, or in a small business, previously had a good reason to buy one Synology device every so many years, then stick into them whatever drives they happened to have or acquired at their desired prices. Synology's stated needs for efficient support of drive arrays may be more defensible at the enterprise level, but as it gets closer to the home level, it suggests a different kind of optimization.

Chinese scientists have achieved a milestone in clean energy technology by successfully adding fresh fuel to an operational thorium molten salt reactor, according to state media reports.

It marks the first long-term, stable operation of the technology, putting China at the forefront of a global race to harness thorium – considered a safer and more abundant alternative to uranium – for nuclear power.

The development was announced by the project’s chief scientist, Xu Hongjie, during a closed-door meeting at the Chinese Academy of Sciences on April 8, the official Guangming Daily reported on Friday.

The experimental reactor, located in the Gobi Desert in China’s west, uses molten salt as the fuel carrier and coolant, and thorium – a radioactive element abundant in the Earth’s crust – as the fuel source. The reactor is reportedly designed to sustainably generate 2 megawatts of thermal power.

Some experts see the technology as the next energy revolution and claim that just one thorium-rich mine in Inner Mongolia could – theoretically – meet China’s energy needs for tens of thousands of years, while producing minimal radioactive waste.

A much bigger thorium molten salt reactor is already being built in China and is slated to achieve criticality by 2030. That research reactor is designed to produce 10 megawatts of electricity.

China’s state-owned shipbuilding industry has also unveiled a design for thorium-powered container ships that could potentially achieve emission-free maritime transport.

Meanwhile, US efforts to revive the development of a molten salt reactor remain on paper, despite bipartisan congressional support and Department of Energy initiatives.

From a Bulgarian factory to Sudanese militias, the FRANCE 24 Observers team reveals how European-made ammunition ended up on the Sudanese battlefield, despite a European Union embargo on sending weapons to this war-torn country. This second article in our five-part investigation focuses on International Golden Group, an Emirati company known for its involvement in diverting arms to countries under international embargo.

Recap of the first article in our series: On November 21, 2024, Sudanese fighters filmed what they said was a shipment of mortar shells bound for the Rapid Support Forces, the militia that is fighting against the Sudanese Army in the ongoing civil war. These weapons, manufactured in Bulgaria, were shipped to Sudan despite the European Union embargo on sending weapons to this war-torn country. We’ve been investigating how this happened.

Next floor is done.... except that I JUST realized upon looking at this picture that I forgot to paint the floor.

With everything on this floor except for the last wall done, there's one little addition I want to make...

ELEVATOR!

They are absolutely as awesome as they look. Coffee Stain REALLY outdid themselves. I don't think there's ever been a feature they've added that I didn't have at least SOME small criticism about, but not this one.

Last wall filled in.

I've used deep research on Gemini 2 and the results were absolutely incredible. To the point that I was shocked. There was no hallucination, no mistake and did what would take me 4 days of research and did it in under 2 mins. (I'm not saying it can't or won't make mistakes or hallucinations at other times for people, but this was clearly so much better than anything else I'd tried). And this wasn't even the best model. Its Gemini 2. Ive heard chat gpt has a research feature that is much better, although i haven't tried that. And according to industry folk, gpt 5 is another massive leap forward.

If you havent tried the deep research feature, you absolutely must.

Harvard Living Wage Sit-In (2001)

Wed Apr 18, 2001

Image

On this day in 2001, 46 demonstrators at Harvard University, carrying sleeping bags, computers, and a week's supply of food, occupied Massachusetts Hall, refusing to budge until the school agreed to pay its workers a "living wage".

The protest was a culmination of years of activism at Harvard to try and get the richest university in the world to pay all of its workers a living wage.

The sit-in ended after 21 days (the longest in Harvard history) when Harvard President Neil L. Rudenstine announced the formation of a University-wide committee to investigate the "principles and policies" regarding low paid and contract university workers.

No non-unionized or non-management workers served on the committee, however, and the workers that did were outnumbered 3-1 by faculty and students.
