Come to Quark’s, Quark’s is Fun!

General off-topic chat for the crew of startrek.website. Trek-adjacent discussions, other sci-fi television, navigating the Fediverse, server meta (within reason), selling expired cases of Yamok sauce, it’s all fair game.

I recently finished Enterprise season 3, and oh gods that was a slog at the end. Like 5 plot-heavy episodes in a row! No fun, no whimsy, no exploration. It's the least star-trekky I have ever seen Star Trek. So I finished it, and thought "can we see some strange new worlds now?" And then Archer was taken prisoner by nazis and I was all "oh no, is this going to be season 4?" But that got resolved in two episodes and I was glad. But now there's an augment arc? Please tell me it ends soon so we can get back to the strange new worlds.

I have the same problem with SNW, to a lesser extent. Too much klingon war stuff, not enough strange new worlds. Lower Decks has the perfect amount of strange new worlds, though, they visited a Halo this season! It was perfect.

Imma give up on Enterprise if there's a whole season of augment drama.

StarTrek actors have a strong showing across the Hallmark movie offerings this year.

— Jonathan Frakes & Robert Picardo have supporting roles in ‘A Biltmore Christmas’

— Dan Jeannotte (Sam Kirk in StarTrekStrangeNewWorlds) is the lead in ‘Our Christmas Mural’

— Ronnie Rowe Jr (Lt Bryce in #StarTrekDiscovery) leads in Christmas with a Kiss’ (working title), a Mahogany Presents romance (Hallmark’s Black-focused line)

— Mira Kirschner (Amanda Grayson in #Discovery and #SNW) is the principal in a romance about a woman discovering her Jewish heritage in a 2022 movie ‘Love, Lights, Hanukkah! that will be rebroadcast this year.

Disney is apparently (re)discovering that they need to treat TV shows like...TV shows.

The studio also plans on having full-time TV execs, rather than having executives straddle both television and film.

“We need executives that are dedicated to this medium, that are going to focus on streaming, focus on television,” says Winderbaum, “because they are two different forms.”

It also is revamping its development process. Showrunners will write pilots and show bibles. The days of Marvel shooting an entire series, from She-Hulk to Secret Invasion, then looking at what’s working and what’s not, are done.

Paramount+ recently canceled iCarly, popular show that originated on Nickelodeon.

I missed this announcement, but it’s another suggestion that Paramount is shifting away from providing content for a younger diverse demographic.

Because we can’t ever get enough Bruce Horak content.

This brief piece is from Canada’s National Arts Centre (in Ottawa).

I know that the utterly incomparable Bruce Horak came back not as Hemmer but as the Klingon for this episode. However the singer, was that Bruce too? If so then I'm genuinely shocked. I thought for sure that it was Weird Al. It sounds almost identical. If it's not Weird Al himself then it's a pitch perfect double.

Just wondering because I couldn't find anything through my usual channels.

This is a major revelation from the trial.

The writer is a principal from Duck Duck Go.

Thought folks here might be interested.

This NPR coverage is interesting.

"A lot of people don't understand how different our demands are from the WGA's demands," Bond said.

Bond said unlike the WGA, the actors union represents many types of performers — actors, dancers, stunt people — each with specific needs that need to be addressed.

Artificial intelligence, for example, is an especially existential threat for background actors, some of whom say they've already had their bodies scanned for reuse.

So Bond said negotiations with the studios' trade association, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) could take a while.

"The AMPTP is just going to use every union busting trick that they have," Bond said.

Hi! I hope this is the right place to post this, but I'm having trouble receiving the images from this instance on my home instance, this is what Risa looks like for me in the browser and in the app (I use liftoff). I've tried the suggestion in the FAQ of disabling adblock/adding a rule, but that doesn't seem to solve anything. I've also asked on my home instance, but it doesn't seem like the problem lies at our side. As soon as I view the communities via your instance directly I have no problem loading the images. So help! How do I get all your amazing memes in my home feed?

Update: So at least on Brave the issue is not the ad blocking, this comment from Freamon has a fix: clearing the cached data of your browser. Xusontha used and suggested the same fix. I will just switch to using Firefox because I don't want to deal with clearing cache all the time. Thanks for your help! :)

I finished watching The Orville, it was a masterpiece from the hands of Seth Macfarlane.

Here, they showed some exchange between admirals and the main ensemble cast quite often, but watching these certain scenes made me compare them to Star Trek admirals. I personally think all admirals in The Orville are great captains who got promoted to the rank of admiral as opposed to Star Trek admirals who are just dumb politicians where our main cast captains keep dealing with their nonsense.

Of course, there are a few reasonable and competent admirals we've seen throughout the franchise, but most of them I've seen reflect real-world politicians that never even had sat on a captain's seat.

A solid round up of some of the broader industry issues as the WGA contract moves towards potential endorsement by WGA East and West leadership Tuesday in preparation for a vote by the members.

Amid some speculation about the questionable neutrality of major Hollywood media sources, owned by AMPTP members, CNN reports from “a source familiar” that WGA has been sent a ‘best & final’ offer.

So, stay tuned for the WGA leadership’s assessment.

I'm hoping this doesn't start a fight, I'm just curious what the political orientation is of this community. I grew up in a liberal (in the American sense) family, and I identify now as a socialist, though a lot of the liberalism I grew up in has stuck with me, like interest in LGBTQ and women's rights, environmentalism, etc. Wondering where people here land?

Many WGA veterans urged caution at getting hopes too high for what may come out of the AMPTP negotiating room later today, after a third day of talks between labor and management that involved four CEOs.

Notably, Paramount Global’s Bob Baklish is not among the CEO’s sitting in.

This week i've decided to rewatch the avatar films on blu ray. I picked up the special editions with the 3 hours worth of extras for each film. I've rewatched the first film and some extras. I'm a casual fan at best and by no means a movie critic, but here arey impressions.

The first avatar film has aged well. I enjoy the world of pandora and it is beautiful on blu ray. The details in the plants are incredible. A botanist that consulted on the film is featured in the bonus content.

I still get the sense that this could of been a two part film, with the first part ending with the destruction of the home tree. Then there would of been space go explore the na'vi tribes before the battle.

I watched the family audio version with english subtitles. The audio creatively removed the swears, but the subtitles didn't.

The bonus features had the main actors reflecting on their experiences making the film and their reflections on its success. They all played their characters brilliantly, and I was surprisingly impressed by Stephen Langs take on playing Quaritch.

Edit: Also after someone pointing this out, I can see the similatities with Fern Gully (which happens to be the first film I watched in theatre.)

I'm looking forward to rewatching way of the water, as I streamed it for the first watch.

I have the series on DVD but I've never seriously cracked it, only seen a few episodes. Was wondering what people here think, is it as good as the internet often says it is? I know it was an inspiration for one of my favorite franchises (Mass Effect) and The Orville had a cute reference to it by making its main actor the president of the Planetary Union, but that's the extent of my B5 knowledge. So anyway, should I binge the series?
