Hi Users of Reddit -

I just turned 28 and I have a busy work schedule, and decided to make a goal of visiting all 32 NHL Stadiums before I turn 32. My biggest why is I love live sports and events, and as someone who spends her time making the fan experience fun as a college coach, I like seeing what other teams do and if I can apply that to my own workspace. I'm passionate about water polo (the sport I play), and so I think hockey excites me in that it's another sport where you're told you can be aggressive. Some of my closest friends are also hockey fans and when I told them I wanted to do this, they were all in on whichever arenas they haven't visited they would join me.

Right now I'm based on the West Coast, USA so I was going to knock the Pacific Division teams in CA (and hopefully AZ and Vegas) out of the way. I booked my ticket for a Sharks game the weekend I'm traveling to the Bay Area for work.

My 32nd birthday is in 2027 right after the 2026-27 Stanley Cup Finals wrap up. That being said, I think my biggest hurdle is going to be travel with the bulk of my work schedule being from Oct-May with a couple of weeks at a time in Nov, Dec, and Jan. I know I will need to update my passport somewhere in between to make traveling to Canada work. Otherwise, general travel, airfare, and (if needed) lodging and car travel will also be on my list of things to plan for.

If anyone else has done this, I would love for any tips on pulling this off. I am thinking about documenting each visit and the fan experience, so protips on what to get as well as memorabilia (I was thinking a custom jersey with the number being which one they were on my final visit list).

What's the most bleak era that you've witnessed your favorite team go through?

Me (Canucks): Not old enough to remember the 80's, so it comes down to two:

• 2013/2014 to present

• 1997/1998 - 1999/2000

It's a fairy easy choice. 2013/2014 to present, or the "Benning era."

97/98' to 99/00' (Messier years) was like ripping a bandaid off. Sure, the team was god awful with plenty of off ice dysfunction, but in retrospect lots of moves were being made to improve the team for the future during that period, most notably:

• Dealt Linden for Bertuzzi, McCabe, and a 2nd (McCabe later used as part of the trade that allowed Burke to pick the Sedins at #2 & #3 in the 99' draft)

• Traded Bure to Florida for a package that included Ed Jovanovski (future core member of the WCE teams of the early 2000's)

• Landed the Sedins in part due to bottoming out and securing a high draft pick

By 2000/2001 the team was back to making the playoffs.

By contrast, the Benning era was a god damn nightmare that arguably persists to this very day. Despite being compelete trash for much of it, the Canucks never once picked in the top 3, and only twice picked in the top 5. Notably blew top 10 picks on Virtanen and Juolevi. Signed brutal albatross contracts including Eriksson, Beagle, Myers, and Rousell. On the eve of 3 of those contracts finally expiring, traded them for an even bigger albatross in OEL. Flipped 2nd round picks for ill advised reclamation projects on the regular. All kinds of off ice turmoil. There really are too many low lights to even list. Easily the worst era of Canuck hockey that I have personally witnessed.

Was just re-watching some World Junior highlights and remembered Canada-USA 2007 when they went to sudden death shootout. Toews went 3 for 3, each with a different move, especially that second top-corner ping, to send Canada to the gold medal game.

Put your shame aside and come clean; what absolutely terrible moves has your favorite team made that you (at the time) supported/thought were good?

Me (Canucks): Really coming clean here. Jared McCann for Erik Gudbranson. Yup. Fell head first into the "this guy is a semi-recent Top 5 pick though!" line of thinking. Also a bit of "yeah, but is McCann REALLY going to be that good?" (he was) copium thrown in for good measure. I don't know what else to say. I had this idea that Gud was some stud D man just waiting to break out. A lot of Canucks fans at the time were (rightly) criticial of the deal, but I tuned it out. Big strong former 3rd overall D, what could go wrong? Shame.

What's the frst round loss that hurt the most for your fav team?

Me (Canucks): Toss up between 2012 and 2013.

2012 (4-1 series loss to LA) - This one hurt because at the time there was still genuine belief that the team could contend. Canuck fans will mostly say they didn't feel it in 2012 like 2011, but IIRC a lot of insiders, media members, etc. were picking Van vs. Pitts for the 2012 Cup Final. The team won the Presidents Trophy, so they were no joke. But, it wasn't to be. Got steamrolled by a sneaky good eight seed in LA (you might have heard of them). That loss sucked.

2013 (4-0 series loss to San Jose) - IMO this one just felt like "ok, so this era is really over for real." That was the end of the road for the AV/Sedins/Kesler/Bieksa/Luongo 2011 era team as a credible contender. Sure, some of those guys stuck around for a bit after the 13' loss, but it was never the same. Pretty clear at that point that that iteration of the team would not be competing for a Cup going forward. A subsequent 10 year Game of Thrones-esque long winter (with a bit of false hope in 15' and 20') ensued. I think that makes this loss feel even more bleak in hindsight.

What do you got?

EDIT: Honorable mention to 7 game loss to Calgary in 2004. That one sucked because of how it ended (dramatic game tying goal by Matt Cooke with like 4 seconds left, only to lose in OT), but at the same time I don't recall there being a lot of expectations for that team. Bertuzzi out post-Moore incident, running with 3rd string goalie in Alex Auld, etc.

What are some examples of great regular season teams who for whatever reason couldn't seem to perform in the playoffs?

My choices:

• San Jose Sharks (2007 - 2014): The Thornton/Marleau era Sharks. Scary good reg season club. They had four 50 win seasons between 07 - 14, and two seasons (08 & 11) where they won 49 and 48 games respecivitely. But, they never really got over the hump in the playoffs. To be fair there were two conference finals appearances in that period, but zero Cup finals. First round losses in 09 (53 win team), 12, and 14.

• Toronto Maple Leafs (2017 - current): The modern day example. Lots of regular season success, but bitter disappoinment in the post season. In the Matthews/Marner/Tavares era they have won only a single playoff round, that being last year vs. Tampa. The fact that they played in one of the toughest divisions in hockey should be noted, however that said there were losses to Montreal and Columbus during the COVID years.

Honourable mention: Late 2000's / early 2010's Washington Capitals
