Paul Bunyan? No. Not a monster. Just a man.

Babe, his giant blue ox, however: totally a Kaiju.

The literal translation/definition of "Kaiju" is "strange beast." Which is why giant humans don't qualify.

[–] Decoy321@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago (2 children)

There's counter evidence that humans can actually achieve a Beast Mode, though.

Some say their only weakness is a pass play on the 1 yard line..

[–] Kalothar@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

Altered Beast, Sonic and then this Zombies are my neighbors or something game are the first games I remember at all.

Maybe around ‘96?

Anyways, yeah that’s hard soli evidence right there you can’t deny it

[–] VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

Are mostly bald apes with manes that are oddly good at throwing things not strange beasts?

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Are you saying Paul Bunyan is not a beast? And a strangely large one at that?

[–] Wogi@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Someone get Arin Hanson on the line we need an official verdict.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I've been watching so much Game Grumps recently, there's a good chance that's where I subliminally obtained this knowledge.

[–] Wogi@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I stopped watching for a while, but then Zelda came out and they're a steady habit again

[–] maythebananabewithyo@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Are they back in decent form at all? Me and my partner stopped watching a long time ago due to the downward spiral of their content quality and editing. It just became more of “how many times can we roll our eyes over the course of a video” than anything else.

Which sucks because our mutual enjoyment of them (among other things) was one of the things that brought us together.

(For reference, I started watching around 2012, her around 2016, and we stopped watching somewhere in 2019)

[–] Wogi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Watch the tears of the kingdom series and see, I got pretty tired of their schtick for a while before that came out

Kaiju stand user?

[–] creditCrazy@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Maybe Bunyan was a stand user with his stand being babe blue

Little known fact that America has one of the first Kaiju. And if Paul Bunyan doesn't count, Babe does.

[–] FlihpFlorp@lemm.ee 18 points 1 year ago

I’d argue that babe better fits the bill of kaiju being a giant blue ox (animal/creature)

[–] cyborganism@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Nah, he's just a French Canadian logger.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Bunyan doesn't sound like a French name to me. Also, didn't it start as a Midwestern U.S. folktale? Like Wisconsin and Minnesota? That's what I thought.

[–] cyborganism@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I've heard that he was the continuation of Joseph "Jos" Montferrand, a French Canadian logger and legend born in Montreal, who worked in the Gatineau and Outaouais region, known also as big John Mufferaw. He then moved south of the border to continue working as a logger where he became known as Paul Bunyan.

[–] i_love_FFT@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Bunyan sounds the same as some old French Canadian swear word, but is written differently. I think the real spelling would be something like "bon yenne", and also resembles a French Canadian folklore named "Bon Jean".

[–] cyborganism@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago

Yes!!!! Absolutely!!!

[–] SplashJackson@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

I heard that Big Joe Mufferaw paddled down the Mattawa

[–] qarbone@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago (2 children)

...where'd he chop a tree that big? did that bastard take down all the cool, fantasy trees??

[–] prettybunnys@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I’m pretty sure I remember that being part of his story, he chopped all the big trees down or smth.

[–] Cryophilia@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Best lumberjack in the Sahara Forest

[–] OhStopYellingAtMe@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Well now we know where all the Entwives went.

They must've been everywhere before he arrived.

[–] FlashZordon@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Godzilla X Paul Bunyan would do NUMBERS

[–] bruhduh@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Can't wait till someone make film about it with ai

[–] creditCrazy@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I'd watch that

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Yes, Godzilla is best when he is the problem.

[–] shadmere@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Are the "good guys" still kaiju? I mean, I know the good monsters are still kaiju. But is, like, Ultraman a kaiju?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

Gamera is a Kaiju and he's a friend to children.

[–] root_beer@midwest.social 2 points 1 year ago

Can you really call Paul Bunyan a “good guy”? The canopy over North America was once monumental, but after he chopped it all down, it is mere legend, fading from memory with the death of each passing generation

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It’s a Japanese word, in English we just say giant

Like Isekai, in English we just say fantasy

[–] NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Isekai means different world and is specific a subgenre of fantasy. For literal fantasy, it's just ファンタジー or fantoji, lol.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

In English it’s not popular enough to differentiate

I think there's a different word for when it's a giant person instead of giant monster. In English he'd just be a giant.

By definition, yes. An abnormally large creature capable of destroying a building without the use of any big weapons. Mr Bunyan could easily topple a building in NYC with just his hands.

That's a big log

[–] Toneswirly@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Way to fuck up my whole Sunday

[–] SPRUNT@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Jolly Green Giant must be kaiju also.

Sprout is a baby kaiju.
