From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

And then finding your way around the forced windows account. ANNOYING

[–] const_void@lemmy.ml 23 points 1 year ago (6 children)

Use no@thank.you as the account name, anything as the password. It will say "whoopsie, there was an error" and then you can create a local account.

[–] vd1n@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Holy shit are you serious?

[–] const_void@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

100%. I use it all the time on test machines at work.

[–] demonquark@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Is this a hardcoded opt out or something? Couple of months ago I had to install windows for a friend. I tried to not make a windows account. All the exploits I found, were “patched”. I finally just gave up and made the account. My friend doesn’t care enough about privacy and I don’t care enough about windows for all that effort.

But, no@thank.you would be awesome.

[–] const_void@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 year ago

I'm not totally sure but I would guess that it's not hardcoded. Probably just buggy behavior, as is usual for Microsoft.

Windows will display a "Let's connect you to a network" or similar screen. The upcoming Windows 11 version 22H2 does not allow you to skip this anymore to create a local account.

they actually restricted this method, evil

[–] LinuxSBC@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Or just anything invalid. I usually do "m" as the username and "m" as the password.

don't forget the constant messages to use Edge as your default browser! blegh!

[–] cestvrai@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago

If you don’t add a WiFi network and don’t plug in ethernet then you can also make a local account.

I had to create new registry keys and relaunch the OOBE with special flags to get around it in windows 11. Such a pain in the ass.

[–] vd1n@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Dude, how the fuck?

I did it once some how making a Rufus USB stick but next time I used Rufus I either didn't get a settings prompt or it just didn't work.

[–] ebits21@lemmy.ca 30 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yep. Why I use Linux now. 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–] HeavyRust@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I like your profile picture. Kind of unnerves me though!

[–] ebits21@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

Thanks! Ripley’s aquarium in Toronto.

Don’t forget to scroll down otherwise you miss a very important one that’s hidden

[–] vd1n@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Oh yeah, the fuck me in the ass option.

It is 2023, you want that check on.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Bill hasn't been associated with Microsoft decisions in like 15 years. Yes he still owns a shit load of the company, but he's not the CEO, he doesn't even sit on the board. He sits in his 16,000 square foot lakefront Medina, WA mansion and gets richer.

[–] neutron@thelemmy.club 4 points 1 year ago

Public consciousness skipped Ballmer's CEO era and apparently Satya's name is too difficult to remember.

No one should feel pain of installing Windows, no one deserves that

[–] noqturn@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I do it almost weekly for my job. I need to improve my Unix skills and become a Linux sysadmin

[–] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 year ago

You can totally automate the Windows install process and configuration. Not even Windows sysadmins should have to be dealing with it manually.

Can't find it anymore, but I remember someone did a DNS analysis and they are even pinging McAfee servers, before you open any apps.

I actually somewhat enjoy using Windows 10 after using a debloat tool and adding a package manager. Windows 11 is still unbearable though.

[–] vd1n@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I feel like the only think I like about windows is that everything works in terms of graphics and plug and play. Plug and play has been good to me on Linux for a while though.

I still get graphics issues on fedora and Ubuntu on my integrated graphics chips.

[–] Phoenix3875@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Not just installing. When updating, sometimes it tries to reset the options and change my default browser to edge.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

It resets everything, including a bunch of tracking shit you intentionally turned off.

[–] dontblink@feddit.it 2 points 1 year ago

Edge would ALWAYS get on the way with its stupid search bar widget. They tried to improve their shitty outdated piece of crap internet explorer that nobody was using and they ended up with a modern shitty piece of crap that is edge.

[–] teawrecks@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 year ago

Pro tip: You can hit space tab space tab... to quickly cycle through them all.

I will say though, it is mighty refreshing to go through a Linux installer now.

[–] 20gramsWrench@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

all these will be reinstated in the next update and all the unsent locally collected information will be sent with the consent you gave by not preventing your system from updating

I wish Windows didn't spy on you in the bathroom. But this helps:

[–] nostradiel@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I use Linux nowadays, but I still have dual boot cause of some games. I use LTSB debloated with stopped updates and telemetry.

[–] anteaters@feddit.de 2 points 1 year ago

I think the day I have to reinstall Windows on my Desktop will be the day I'll replace it with Linux. Already use it on server and laptop but stuck with Windows for gaming. Anyone know if SteamVR works on Linux?

[–] throws_lemy@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

The reason why I still use Windows is Excel, because everyone still relies on Eccel formulas and macros 🙄

[–] vd1n@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

Bro just say fuck it. If you use Linux you don't need to care about regular lifestyle traditions. Treat yo self.

As a side note, you can use O&O ShutUp10++ to do all these settings quickly so you don't have to hunt around all the menus. It has presets too IIRC.

Also it works on Windows 11 too despite the name.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Didn't Bill Gates leave Microsoft in 2008? Other than that, yeah.

[–] Psythik@monyet.cc 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Seriously, lol; how did this post even get upvotes? (UpLemmies? Whatever they're called here)

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Also this was one of the early windows 10 updates lol. Like 2017 or something.

How it feels to install windows in 2023 is to drop to a hidden shell and run some commands to create a local account instead of a Microsoft account to log into your computer. Fuckin disgusting.

I installed it in VirtualBox because I wanted to try if a neovim plugin worked with it.

The most awful experience ever. It's so bad it's tragic, and screams surveillance late stage capitalism. If people don't notice that, it's because they have slowly become used to it under the windows regime.

[–] Millie@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Honestly, if Solaar supported the dpi toggle and remapping my extra keys on my MX Ergo, I might be using Linux daily. But it doesn't. So I can't. :(

[–] const_void@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Are you using 1.1.9? I have remap ability

[–] Millie@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

I think so. It clicks the button, it just won't hold it. And the precision mode dpi adjustment thing doesn't work at all.
