You can get edible gold sheets for around 10 bucks. Goes to show how much those restaurant selling gold covered steak for thousands of dollars are a rip-off.

[–] synapse1278@lemmy.world 32 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Seeing gold sheet on food is an immediate red flag for me. Pretentious and useless, it's a strong sign a restaurant is trying to sell mediocre food at an inflated price. Other red flags are truffle and foie gras, although those can legitimately taste delicious, if you see the triple combo gold, truffle, foie gras there is a 95% chance it's horseshit.

Foie gras makes me sad. It’s usually cruel, produced by force-feeding animals. There are ways to make it humanely but they are rarely carried out.

But damn is it good. I don’t eat it anymore, but I have had it a couple of times and loved it.

[–] mortalic@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Lol as opposed to.... Any other type of meat? I don't think any meat where they are raised to be shot in the head in an assembly line is "cruelty free" I used to work for a fairly well known dairy company. Guess what happens to baby boy cows.

You just happen to be aware of foi gras and how they are raised/slaughtered.

The world isn’t black and white, there are spectra. I’m not saying meat isn’t cruel, just that some forms of meat are more cruel than others.

FWIW, I’m neither vegan nor vegetarian, but I have made an effort to reduce my meat consumption.

[–] Pieisawesome@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Typically they don’t shoot animals in the head. Unless you are a dickhead who isn’t using the animals for meat.

It’s a waste to kill the baby male cows for no reason. You can slaughter for veal

Larger animals such as cows will probably be killed by a bolt gun or captive bolt, which is basically a piece of metal shooting into your brain and instantly killing you

Animals must be rendered surgically insensible before slaughter per USDA requirements

Other animals are rendered surgically through other mechanisms, including Electrical stunning, (note: the animal muscles may twitch due to electrical activity, so this “looks bad”) gas, and other mechanisms.

I highly recommend people look into Temple Grandin. She has several YouTube videos that highlight her work and some misconceptions.

Look man, I worked at a very large dairy farm. Don't send me you tube links, I saw how it went down. Don't kid yourself, there isn't a cruelty free way to slaughter creatures.

It adds nothing except people can post shit on their Instagram

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Wait, is Instagram cool with that now? Asking for a friend.

[–] BroBot9000@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Only one way to find out. Report back your findings 😂

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 days ago

Those are not usually real gold though.

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 18 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The only way that would work is if the gold is on the outside of the poo. Odds are that it will not be on the surface in amounts that would be noticeable.

[–] Cort@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

Or sparkly diarrhea could leave gold flake all over the bowl

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 16 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

Your shit would definitely have some in it since it isn't digestible. It would come out the same way it went in.

[–] FooBarrington@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It would come out the same way it went in.

Wait, you shit out of your mouth?

[–] K4mpfie@feddit.org -2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I'm not fully convinced the acid in your stomach would cause the gold to change color

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 15 points 4 days ago (1 children)

One of gold's amazing properties is that it doesn't chemically react to almost anything. It doesn't oxidize, is almost impossible to corrode, and doesn't get eaten away by most acids, including stomach acid.

[–] Kyrgizion@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago

Yeah unless your stomach is producing aqua regia that gold's coming out the exact same way it went in.

:( it's for science...

[–] ragebutt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 4 days ago

I’ve never had a gold leaf thing, aside from a shot of goldschlager, but I have wondered this

Maybe the next time I make a dessert I’ll pick up some flavorless, odorless gold to really take my treat to the next level. What a stupid trend

[–] Venus_Ziegenfalle@feddit.org 5 points 4 days ago

Yes but you would need to eat a lot

[–] realitista@lemm.ee 4 points 4 days ago

Goldschlager doesn't cost considerably more than any other bottle of booze.
