I've tried a bunch of different seat cushions/modifications and everything I've bought that's explicitly for office chairs has sucked.

I bought a trucker seat cushion from a loves rest stop on a road trip and started using it for my office chair. It's been really nice. Only problem is that it tends to slide a little, but my cheeks are cozy af for my 8 hour work days.

[–] HatchetHaro@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 5 days ago

i think people have the chairs and cushions covered.

instead, i recommend you also look into footrests. someone already mentioned lowering the chair to keep your legs angled properly, but that may make it uncomfortable to work if your desk is at a fixed height.

I'd just get a chair that's comfortable without any add-ons. I have a Steelcase Leap V2 at home, and a Steelcase Amia at work. I can and have sat in these for 16hrs plus in a day. Tempurpedic also has nice, thick butt cushions in their chairs at a fraction of the price.

Drag yourself to the local store that sells chairs etc.

What is comfortable for one person is torture for another. Somethings have to be purchased hands on.

Apply directly to the buttocks!

[–] fuckwit_mcbumcrumble@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

The problem I have (and OP may have it as well) The chair might be comfortable for the first 3, 4, maybe 5 hours. But past that it's a problem. Plus what's comfortable for you ass isn't always comfortable for your back/neck.

[–] ShepherdPie@midwest.social 2 points 1 week ago

At work we have Steelcase Leap V2 chairs and they're comfortable for 12 hour shifts plus they have been in 24/7 use for at least a decade now and only recently have been showing some issues.

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

If you're sitting for more than an hour straight that's probably the problem.

OSHA rules demand that anyone sitting for more than 90 minutes straight get a 40 minute break.

Stop torturing yourself.

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

40 minutes, huh? Well, this is completely made up. Also, where are the desk chair cushion stores, because I must be missing something.

I already do this, you don't understand how boney my ass is.

[–] chemical_cutthroat@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If your legs are falling asleep it probably means your seat is too high. If you lower it, that should give some relief. As far as a cushion goes, I can't help too much. I had one for my last chair and it worked fine, but I ditched the chair for an Aeron and haven't had any problems at all. As far as I know, any cushion is gonna be just fine. Padding is padding.

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Was gonna say a cushion is probably not the solution to OPs problem, they're either not using their chair correctly or the chair is bad

[–] jj122@lemmings.world 8 points 1 week ago (3 children)

You can also find steelcase chairs on eBay for reasonable prices. They have all the adjustments and a wide variety of material options.

[–] BoxOfFeet@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

A fellow Steelcase fan. Awesome. What's yours?

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I’m sorry, I like my chair. I’m looking for a seat cushion.

[–] jj122@lemmings.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I tried the purple cushion and it wasn't worth it. But besides that I don't have a recommendation.

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

That's very useful info, actually. Thanks!

Can't recommend this enough. I found a lightly used steelcase leap v1 on Craigslist for $120 (one owner). It was the same price as what I paid for a new EZBoy office chair from Costco, but the EZBoy started falling apart after less than a year. This Steelcase is over 15 years old and it looks and feels better than the other chair did when it was new. My back pain also went away when I got it, but I got a new mattress around the same time so it was probably a combination of the two... I do sit at my desk for 10+ hours a day, though.

There are other similar chairs (eg. Herman Miller Aeron), and while I hate to recommend reddit, I haven't found a better source for info on second hand high-end office chairs. If you're considering a new office chair and suffer from back pain (sorry OP, I know you aren't looking for a new chair), consider a higher-end used chair.

[–] karl_chungus@lemm.ee 1 points 5 days ago

Crandall office furniture!

Ordered a reconditioned Aeron there this Summer for about half what it would cost new and I love it. And since it’s reconditioned that means Herman Miller and their shitty-ass CEO didn’t make anything from me.

Only thing is it had a bit of a funky smell when unwrapping, but it aired out quickly.

Tempur is a crazy expensive brand, but does wonders in my case: https://www.amazon.es/Tempur-0855aj-Coj%C3%ADn-Asiento/dp/B001KALM3I Alternatively, the one below has also helped me a lot: https://amzn.eu/d/bUeqLi6 All in all, as someone said earlier, it all varies from one person to another, but there you have my two cents

[–] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

I’ve had good results with the cushionlab car-specific one. I know they make a regular one, but the car seat shape works great on the particular mesh chair I have for some reason. Getting out for an occasional walk helps a lot too, even 10 minutes.

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Same as you. Trust me when I say this is the best chair I've ever used. 5 years on and still a solid chair.
https://www.staples.com/union-scale-flexfit-hyken-ergonomic-mesh-swivel-task-chair-black-un59460/product_990119

Gaming chairs are scams. Overpriced and just have fancy colors on plywood. Get a solid officechair. They make their chairs sturdy and ready to have someone sit in them for 8 hours a day 5 days a week.

Mesh is another huge +1, this chair keeps you much cooler. People think they want leather or something. No, it gets too hot, and if you're sweaty at all it's sticky, and they don't last well. A solid mesh keeps you cool, supported, and your bony ass can sit comfortably for long periods of time. (Just remember to stand up every once in a while, for health)

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I’m sorry, this is the chair I already have. I’m looking for a seat cushion.

Oh sorry, I got so hyped about chairs I completely missed that part

[–] vladmech@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Picking this up, thanks for the rec!

You won't regret it!

[–] Varyk@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I'll say that some chairs are more comfortable than others, but a standing desk is finally what felt the most comfortable for me.

[–] Graphy@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I got a standing desk at work and when I was nervous I just started pacing around the whole office and creeping out my employees. Had to get back to sitting

[–] Varyk@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

I liked using my standing desk in my home office. so much that I eventually got one for the office.

I got a lot of compliments and interested short conversations, but notably only one other person transitioned to a standing desk.

[–] bluGill@fedia.io 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I've always wanted a treadmill but hard to say I would use it enough to be worth it.

[–] ShepherdPie@midwest.social 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They make great clothes racks.

[–] bluGill@fedia.io 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You are thinking of a fitness treadmill which is commonly used as a clothes rack. I'm thinking of a treadmill for use at a desk which lacks those side rails to hang clothes on (and also goes a lot slower) . Some people walk on them all day while typing, and it sounds great, but I don't know if I really could use one all day while working.

[–] ShepherdPie@midwest.social 1 points 5 days ago

The trick is to get your employer to buy you one under the guise of ergonomics or health and safety so that you can try it out without spending your own money.

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

No thank you. I just need a good cushion.

[–] thal3s@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago

This really is the answer. You’re sitting too much and a need to stand more to build up your muscles and ease blood flow to your legs.

[–] Varyk@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago

cool. i always like digging through the huge pillow cushion area they have at thrift stores.

I have a lot of pillows.
