Reddit Migration

I see a lot of posts about how they uploaded anti-spez stuff onto reddit, or participated in the nsfw spams/john oliver spams. While I get wanting to let it all out, this ultimately keeps up engagement on reddit rather than bringing it down.

The best way to make sure things go your way? Vote with your wallet, or in this case your voice. Don't speak on reddit. Devote more time helping out the alternatives grow and flourish. And as much as it is a meme, touching some grass can help your mental fortitude.

If you absolutely 100% need to interact with reddit, I suggest installing a redirector addon (such as privacy redirect or... redirector) that can link to a teddit or libreddit instance. Or archiving it with wayback/archive.is/ghostarchive.

EDIT: GO DM MODS OF YOUR FAVORITE SUBREDDITS AND POLITELY ASK ABOUT MIGRATION!: something as simple as "Hey, I love this community but I no longer use reddit, will you guys be making a community on Kbin or other alternatives? Let me know please, thanks." will work!! We need more voices encouraging migration!

I keep seeing communities on lemmy writing in their bio "not official" or in some way deferring to the reddit community. I also see them writing that they're willing to give up their community to the reddit mods if they ask. It's like the whole place has imposter syndrome.

We're the adults, guys.

We're here. This is our community now. We broke up with that site, and we are making a new one. Run your community the way you think it should be run. Their communities are not any more official than ours. This is our place, not theirs.

Over the last week or so I have noticed that I have a lot more fun engaging in discussions on here as opposed to reddit.

On reddit i always felt like i was shouting into the void and there was nobody listening, which resulted in me becoming a lurker for the last 12 years.

Maybe it's the small size of this community, the lack of karma farmers, that I've finally lost my mind or a little bit of all of the above, but this place just feels like something special. I'm really looking forward to building the fediverse with all of you!

They did not provide a reason. There was no further dialog. I just got a system message telling me I was removed.

I was also silmultaniously shadow banned from Reddit and my posts and comments stopped showing up. I had created a post complaining about being removed as the moderator (the only moderator for over a decade) of a sub that I built from the ground up and donated literally thousands of volunteer hours to over the last 14 years. It had zero upvotes or downvotes or comments and was not visible as an anon user.

In the end, I decided to rip the bandaid off and killed my 16.5 year account. I was one of the early supporters of Reddit (user #7758) and had left Digg for good in May of 2007 after the AAC controversy. They showed their authoritarian side in that moment and I knew Digg had reached their high water mark.

Reddit is at that moment now. They won't be dead tomorrow. They won't be dead next week. However, it will also never be the same, and it's only downhill from here.

Much like Digg. Much like Myspace. I am sure there will be a blurb a few years from now as an addendum in some business journal how Reddit sold to a third party for an undisclosed sum and some Skittles...

The future is the Fediverse and I'm glad I was forced to remove my Reddit crutch and dive in full force.

Edit 2: I'll also add, that I was never going to re-open the sub because I knew Reddit wasn't going to yield. Thus, I was prepared for the outcome. I did hope to string them along for a bit longer and waste resources, but you can't win them all.

Ahoy hearties! Here what I be thinkin'. Reddit be chargin' tens of millions of doubloons for third-mates to access the API, aye? They be claimin' to deserve a share of the booty for providin' trainin' data for AI (and obviously to kill competition with third-mate apps to boot).

Methinks if yee MUST chatter with those landlubbers (such as for the purpose of recruitin' new mates or cussing out mutinous scabs), then yee ought to make any text data yee provide unappealing and unusable to potential AI-training-customers.

Paintings of (Sexy) Captain John Oliver will only sully the attention of the human users. But (pirate) coded language mayhaps be an obstruction for bots? For those who find pirate speak to be too much effort, an alternative be to speak "sdrawkcaB".

I don't really care if the lurkers stay on reddit, but I'd like for the creators to transition here and I'd like for this to be the place where you find the good information.

Rather than berate people who stay, I'm offering carrots / breadcrumbs. In the communities I was active, I'm still monitoring what's being posted. Instead of posting new content or answers I'm composing content (with a paraphrased question where appropriate) here on the fediverse and simply providing a link to my response in the reddit thread.

Will reddit start blocking the fediverse? Maybe. Will my posts be downvoted or banned? Maybe. Do I care? Only in that it reduces the visibility of good content. And maybe that's enough to drive people to look in places other than reddit anyway.

I believe this is a long-view approach to migrating away from reddit, and helping others do the same. Reddit will not collapse overnight (as entertaining as that would be), but rather will be a long, slow tapering as the Next Thing^TM^ takes hold. And I'm hoping that this is that next thing that is less likely susceptible to corruption.

I wanted to ask everyone their personal least favorite communities on reddit.

Whic subreddits do you absolutely not (personally of course) want to see recreated as magazines here on kbin, or as fediverse communities in general?

My pet peeve is CMV. I always felt while the idea seemed doable on the surface, the implementation within that particular subreddit with the delta system, the requirement for the top level comments to oppose the OP even if the "view" is an established expert consensus on something like climate change made it impossible to have meaningful conversations.

I haven't checked if we have a CMV magazine here, but as soon as I see one, I know I'm blocking it.

While most of the people here upset and rightfully so, we have got to move past the angst to actually build this place out.

We have to recreate the environment and communities we've created on on Reddit here, so that people don't feel like they're missing out being on kbin.

That way, the next time Spez goes full Elon, we already have everything in place to make the jump.

I help run r/MMA on Reddit. We aggregate news as well as bringing on MMA figures for AMAs.

We, like many other magazines here, will need a way to quickly aggregate breaking news onto our magazine, and the easiest way to do that is going to be through a bot that mirrors submissions to our subreddit.

At least for the mags that rely on breaking news, if we implement this at scale, the end user wont be missing much by migrating over here if they get all the same great breaking news.

Do we have any bot builders in the house who could take this on as a project?

We would be leveraging Reddit's own userbase at scale to better kbin, and eventually beat them in the long run. That's the biggest L we could ever deal them.

Steve Huffman said in an interview that Elon Musk's cost-cutting at Twitter was inspiring and that the two have chatted "a handful of times."

Reddit can restore your deleted posts. However, if people flood them with GDPR / CCPA delete requests, they may become liable for lawsuits if they don't comply.

It sounds like their current policy is to not delete your posts even when deleting your account, but there may be grounds for legal action here.

If you're like me, you have a habit of typing reddit.com whenever you have some time to kill at a computer.

Kicking habits takes time, so as you develop a new habit of typing kbin.social (or lemmy.world or whatever the case may be), consider a browser extension that blocks or redirects traffic from reddit to your desired new social media destination.
