I'm taking an important exam in a couple months, but I know that I don't perform well when there's a ticking clock. My heart rate goes through the roof and I can barely read properly lol - it's like I have no short term memory: I read a sentence and I have to reread it like 5 times just to comprehend it.

I've tried to simulate those nerves when I practice taking the exam, but it never even gets close to the extremes I experience on actual test day. I think subconsiously I know that it's a practice exam so I'm much lighter, but when it's the actual test day, I get so overwhelmed.

I've tried all sorts of breathing exercises, but they never seem to do much.

How can I get better at focusing under timed pressure? Are there any exercises I can practice?

I'm working out and eating healthier during the day. Once night approaches I crave things that aren't best. My goal is to train my body to not want food when it's time to sleep

I am currently working at a summer job and I will be done in about 20 days. It is pretty much inevitable that my boss will ask me if I'm coming back next year, and I am not.

Next year I will have preparations for college so I don't know how much free time I will have and even if I do have enough for the summer job I do not wish to return here. While the job itself isn't that difficult, I work for 12+ hours per day and have barely any free time and no days off. Also, the town I'm working at is really small so I don't have anything to do in that little free time that I have. The boss and his family are amazing (which is the reason I want to reject them as politely as possible), but when I look at the good and bad stuff about the job the choice is clear.

Another thing I should mention here is that a few months ago, before getting this job, I sent a job request to a hotel that I really want to work at because they pay well, give me free time and aren't a private location so there aren't any annoying "boss's friends". Recently I got a call from this hotel and they told me to send a job request this december for the next year because they want me to work there but they couldn't squeeze me in this year. This means that I have a pretty safe option for the next year. Even with that in mind it would be nice to have an opening here in the worst case scenario that I don't find any other job.

I already talked with my parents about this and they told me to just go with "I don't know if the school and college will allow me to come back. Don't count on me". Is there anything else I should say so that I reject the boss while not insulting him?

Half-caffeinated coffee drinks (and even half-caf bags of beans) exist and are the right amount of caffeine for me.

If you want to quit and you brew at home, buy a bag of normal beans and a bag of decaf, and start at 50% of each in your morning brew, then every few days, increase the decaf amount in the split.

Every week, spend around 30mins looking for job openings in your field even if you just started a new job. It doesn’t hurt to browse around, you might come across a better opportunity. Don’t feel bad because you have a good boss, the company treats you well, you are friends with your colleagues, etc.

My colleague just got let go because the company decided to eliminate his position. There was no sign or warning. It just happened over night. They were with the company for 10yrs. Loyalty doesn’t guarantee job security. Companies don’t give a sh*t whether you have a family to feed. They only care about $$$$ in their pockets. Lookout for yourself.

Started a new job recently and I basically am required to sit at my desk 8 hours a day but have no actual tasks to do. Hoping this gets better but preparing for the worst. How to I cope with having nothing to do (yes, I’ve already spoken with supervisor)?

The generic CVS or Rite Aid Brand or Amazon knock-offs will do. I know it’s the price that usually stops us, we see the cheaper price tag for the 18ct Tampon box on sale, and boom, we buy it again from habit.

But jesus christ, invest in a menstual cup NOW if you can, please.

  • They will end up saving you hundreds to thousands of dollars.
  • You will never have to worry about being low or out of tampons literally ever again. It’s only added stress on top of the other PMS stress.
  • It literally makes my crampy ass ten times less crampy. In fact, I barely have bad cramps when it’s in.
  • They’re comfy. I never notice it’s in. Taking it out is…. something to get used to. But you do get used to it, and while it may be weird at first, you quickly acclimate.
  • They rarely barely leak if you stay on top of it. Staying on top of it is easier because you can leave it in with ease for longer stretches of time without it leaking unlike a tampon on your first or second days.
  • you simply won’t regret it.

"Those of us who are kind and compassionate experience clear benefits to our well-being and happiness. We may even live longer. Kindness also helps reduce stress and improve our emotional well-being.

We all have so much going on in our lives that sometimes pushes kindness aside.

By taking the time to be kind to others, we can benefit from emotional upsides. It really does make a difference, especially for people who are vulnerable or struggling.

With everything that's going on in the world, now is the time to help make a kinder society that improves our mental health."

To avoid moral platitudes, I want to share what happened ealier today to show the direct impact an act of kindness can have: an unknown woman ahead of me at a drive throuh paid for my order with no explanation as to why, and she left before I could even thank her. She wasn't flexing in a fancy car or anything so I was left to guess what she intended.

Prior to this, I had been feeling depressed over the past few weeks but this one act of random kindness had me glowing with warmth. Compelled to share this positive feeling I immediately returned the favor to the next person, at no actual cost to me since technically the person before me had afforded me not only her kindness but also the ability to give this kindness to others.

Her one act shifted my gears into a more hopeful mindset that had been lost on me for weeks; and as a consequence I was empowered to take on some of the tasks I had been avoiding, eventually leading me to share this with you here and now.

The interesting thing is that she had no idea what her actions would have but here is a direct record of it, should she ever encounter this.

To the lady at the drive through that paid for my breakfast: thank you for the gift of your kindness but also the power to give kindness to others.

Note: kindness btw does not have to monetary or resource oriented to have an impact, just taking the time to help a person feel genuinely seen can have a profound impact that has down stream effects on the people and community around them; this also brings to light that negative behaviors eventually spread and impact everyone.

I hope you will make kindness a part of your day in engaging with others; deciding to make kindness a habit can improve society for everyone.

Medical malpractice is the 3rd leading cause of death in the US. Any time I have a medical/dental concern of some sort, I get worried that it will not be fixed, lead to something worse, continuous pain, or diminished quality of life. As I get older, I’m already concerned about the quality of life. Back pain seems to be a common occurred for people in their 50s+. How can I stop worrying so much? Medical problems combined with medical bills make it that much worse/worrisome.

Thanks to EU 261 regulation, airlines that delay or cancel flights owe you money.

I had a US domestic leg on the way back from the EU return $1300 for 2 tickets because it was delayed more than 4 hours.

With more than 20% of flights being delayed every day, there’s a good chance there’s real money in it for your trouble.

I had 3 emails with the airline’s support, and was even offered more in flight credits. It took a month from the first request to check in the bank.

Note that there are online services that will do this for you, but:

  1. You basically have to submit the same information to them. They’re only useful if the airline forces you to go to court, as they’re theoretically do that for you.
  2. They’re “free” up front, but charge 20-30% in success fees. Worth a few emails in my experience.

Thanks to hacker news for the story that had me look into it. It took that guy 3 months and even a request to the EU agency, but that wasn’t too bad. I’m curious how airlines are going to fight this. Hope they don’t flag the account/travelers, which seems illegal, but that never stopped a corporation.

Poor grammar can reflect poorly on your socioeconomic standing and hurt your chances in your professional and personal career. Now that most communications are performed digitally via text or email, proper grammar is crucial

These automated phone systems are designed to frustrate you just enough for you to solve your own problem without talking to a person (I.E. go to the website and deal with it yourself). They will push you all the way to your breaking point in terms of patience before they actually transfer you to a real person so they very often have a hard-coded trigger to transfer the call if you start cursing at the robot.

This has worked for me several times when zero did nothing. It's especially common if they're trying to discourage people from paying a bill by phone using non-automated systems.

Most of the time it's fine but usually on Fridays or weekends my housemates have their kids over and they occupy the whole kitchen, usually in the evening (like 5pm to 11pm). I could theoretically use the kitchen while they're there but I'd rather jump off a bridge to be honest.

I have a kettle in my room and I always keep a big jug of water in my room too so I can make hot drinks or instant noodles but I want to avoid eating unhealthy stuff too often.

I also have some fruit and nuts in my room, but that's not enough for a whole dinner.

All I can think of is bread and some tinned stuff, like sardines in tomato sauce or spam.

Any ideas apart from going out or ordering food?

Do you know anybody who gets bullied a lot in multiple situations?

What advice would you give them?

I don't understand why I get bullied so much in multiple situations.

I (35m) have been with my gf (33f) for about 4 years. When we met I was renting, but looking to purchase a house on my own regardless of relationship status. Since then I have purchased and have been in the house for almost 2 years. The down payment was 100% from me, and the house is only in my name (being that 2 years into the relationship I wasn't trying to push and pressure her into buying a house together or anything, it was my plan prior to meeting her, so I simply continued with that plan). She lives with me 100% fully in the house. I have paid every mortgage installment on my own, every utility bill on my own, I buy groceries every week on my own, I buy basically every other necessity on my own. Occasionally when we're eating out she'll pay, but even that's like a 85/15 split. She is employed, and it's a fairly decent salary at that.

How do I approach her in a way that won't be offensive to start helping financially (admittedly, I need the support). I love her, and I want a future with her, but I can't wait until we're married to figure out how we're going to work through finances. But I also realize that her names not on the deed and that makes things a little awkward. Any help would be appreciated.

This is US specific. In an emergency always request the fire department instead of the police, that way at least you now for certain someone will show up in minutes, whereas the police may take hours or never show up at all.

Here’s why:

• Swift Response: They typically have impressive response times, ensuring that help arrives promptly.

• Versatility: Firefighters are trained to handle a myriad of emergencies, be it medical, hazardous situations, or rescues.

• Collaboration: If there’s a need for police or other services, firefighters are adept at coordinating with them directly on the scene.

• Safety-Centric: Their primary goal is safety and rescue, ensuring a focused approach to the situation at hand.

If, as the situation unfolds, you realize you need police intervention, the fire department can assist in that communication, ensuring you get the help you need.

Stay prepared and stay safe! 🚒

These stains are orangey to white depending on the color of the shirt. They only appear on the front top part of the shirt, and specifically only my shirt, even though my family washes all our clothes together. I washed some shirts right after buying them (not worn yet) and the stains also appeared. I have tried using vinegar but it does not work.

I have a slide clicker remote that has a rubberized coating. It has been in storage for awhile and when I took it out, it was all gummy and gross. Can I clean it with some over the counter solution?

How can one better remember past conversations / events that happens in life?

If I ask you what was the last thing you lost? or what song was your kid playing non stop when they were young? or to recall the conversation you had with that couple you randomly met on vacation 2 years ago, you probably would remember it. Me, I don't. I can recall some of it when prompted, but I have too many blanks, so when I talk to someone that shared those moments with me I feel like I wasn't even there.

How can I improve it?

Original Title: LPT: If you're petting a cat's belly & they bite you, don't pull your hand away. They're not actually being a**holes. Most of the time they're just playing. Hold your hand there & wiggle about it as they play-kill your hand.

Of note, some cats don't know how to do this skillfully yet and might bite too hard.

Just stop playing the moment they do this and you can slowly train them to do it gently.

Since getting my retainers fitted iv noticed they've caused me to drool in my sleep,iv caught my mouth being open several times hence the drool,im guessing its because my lips find it harder to stay shut with the retainer.I've had them for over a year now and my lips havent accustomed and theres no chance of me taking the retainer off.

My real problem is that the drool is giving me acne were it lands, this is gross but i literally wakeup with drool all the way to my cheeks and chin, ive tried everything-

-sleeping on my back (im normally a stomach side sleeper) gave me the worst headache ever and my body hurt all over generally an awful sleeping i wont be repeating

-sleeping on a pillow and positionig my head in an upwards position ,didnt work

-using a pillow to tuck under my chin so my mouth doesnt open(very uncomfortable and when tossing at night it just moved)

-changing toothpaste to non sls ,pillowcase changing every night and the vaseline hack all dont work

im considering mouth taping right now ,but is there anything else i should try before doing it

It shows that you're not taking their aggression personally and understand that they may not actually meant to be this aggressive and if was maybe only circumstantial. Sometimes people will take this opportunity to rephrase their aggressivity into something calmer which allows discussion rather than full on confrontation.

Doesn't always work, but always worth a shot and try to take the high road.

Edit: obviously you have to say it in a way that you mean it and actually care about their day. Otherwise you may sound condescending.
