Is it just Kbin, or does every fediverse service have the issue of being totally swarmed with bots advertising illegal pharmaceuticals? Is this just the result of limited moderation?

A while ago I posted a thread back on the

website, with a personal opinion on why the Fediverse seems a bit complicated. It basically goes like this: Mastodon (and pretty much every Fediverse project out there) is based on the idea of using multiple websites.

This is not really a problem on the desktop, as you're using the browser to log in to the Fediverse. You go to mastodon.social or lemmy.world, maybe bookmark these, and you log in as normal (if you do not check the remember me option at login). Same goes with Facebook, with Xitter, with the

spoiler
spez
website etc.

Alright, but the newer generations (not everyone, but many folks part of them) rather use apps instead. And what do these apps do? Present a login screen with fields only for the username and the password (at most).

What are the Fediverse apps doing? They are also asking for the website where they would log you in. So you go open e.g. the Mastodon app, then type the website that you need to access (which in many cases it might not contain the word Mastodon in it), and only then you can enter the credentials.

What am I asking now (especially app developers): Wouldn't it be better (if doable) to take some cues on how actually email (and XMPP for that matter) works, and ask the user for the username and the password instead in one go?

Like, everyone knows how to use email, everyone is familiar with that. And as I mentioned, XMPP is also doing it as well:

Gajim account login screen

Wouldn't it be doable?

Look at this fucking mess with these bots and lonely losers with too much time on their hand. They've all taken a dump on multiple instances and magazines.

Is this the kind of future we've got to look forward to on the Fediverse?

This journey takes us through the corridors of time to unravel the significance of votive candle boxes in ancient rituals and the profound symbolism they embody.

Ancient Origins:

Votive candle boxes find their roots intertwined with the dawn of civilization, from the mystical rites of Mesopotamia to the grand temples of Egypt. Votive candle boxes were not merely functional objects but also expressions of artistic ingenuity and devotion. Adorned with intricate carvings, symbolic motifs, and vibrant colors, these boxes reflected the cultural and religious aesthetics of their time. From the elegant simplicity of Egyptian designs to the elaborate craftsmanship of Greek and Roman artisans, each Custom candle boxes was a testament to the creativity and reverence of its maker.

I forced myself to go back a little to Reddit recently. Because while I endorse and love the existence of the Fediverse, I can't in good conscience, tolerate the instability of it. Any other time I go somewhere, I'm met with a page that says KBin is working on resolving issues, then I go somewhere else and it's fine.

Sometimes commenting takes a little lag, requiring me to click twice, this happens when I'm even commenting to other instances from KBin, like to Lemmy.

I understand that the fediverse isn't as well maintained and operational as most centralized social media sites. But if it could smooth and iron out these issues, then it would be more of an attractant to gain users.

Because not only do users seek alternatives to go, but they'd love it if there was stability in functionality.

There's a warning at the top, but I'm curious as to the "why". The comments that may or may not be visible seem to be a roll of the dice as well. If I respond to someone in a comment, I have no idea if they can see it.

Hi all.

I had taken a break from posting to my magazine due to the lacking in effective moderation tools, especially bans not federating, an issue I don't see a solution for happening any time soon, but I'd quite like too post again. So my question:

I have seen mention in passing of mods saying they have locked a post to comments, and specifically yesterday a mod from slrpnk.net said they were going "to disable public posting and lock all threads". Which made me think that that might work for me.

However, from kbin it looks like I can still comment on posts in the community they said they were locking, so is this an instance-only solution, in a similar way to what banning users seems to be, where it only works locally, but people on other instances can go on interacting externally without issue (and without the mods being able to do anything about those external interactions)?

Is there an existing* way to just post image links to the fediverse without having to worry about moderating the comments because they're disabled across all instances? I'm not in it for the internet points and am more than happy for people to repost the content I share if they want to have their own conversations, I just can't take it on myself to keep the trash out if I can't actually keep it out.

Thanks!

*I don't have the knowledge or spare time and energy to invest in learning and then maintaining a self-hosting situation, so that won't work for me

When registering a country code domain, keep in mind where the domain is being registered. A shift in government or geopolitics can have serious consequences.

49

Seems like an interesting effort. A developer is building an alternative Java-based backend to Lemmy’s Rust-based one, with the goal of building in a handful of different features. The dev is looking at using this compatibility to migrate their instance over to the new platform, while allowing the community to use their apps of choice.

50

Somebody who was previously active on the kbin codeberg repo has left that to make a fork of kbin called mbin.

repo: https://github.com/MbinOrg/mbin

In the readme it says:

Important: Mbin is focused on what the community wants, pull requests can be merged by any repo member. Discussions take place on Matrix then consensus has to be reached by the community. If approved by the community, no additional reviews are required on the PR. It's built entirely on trust.

As a person who hangs around in repos but isn't a developer that sounds totally insane. Couldn't someone easily slip malicious, or just bad, code in? Like you could just describe one cool feature but make a PR of something totally different. Obviously that could happen to any project at any time but my understanding of "code review" is to at least have some due diligence.

I don't think I would want to use any kind of software with a dev structure like this. Is it a normal way of doing stuff?

Is there something I'm missing that explains how this is not wildly irresponsible?

As for "consensus" every generation must read the classic The Tyranny of Stuctureless. Written about the feminist movement but its wisdom applies to all movements with libertarian (in the positive sense) tendencies. Those who do not are condemned to a life of drama, not liberation.
