Hi all. I've chosen Connect For Lemmy as my go-to android lemmy app for now but it has a strange quirk. (Unless this is true?) While trying to search or even access communities, I'm getting an error page telling me that feddit is under maintenance. There's even a banner informing me this across the bottom of the app.

Is this an app bug or something server side?

I tried signing up to this instance using a disposable email address but the verification email never came through.

Do you have a rule against disposable email addresses?

Thanks

Reddit account deleted. It’s weird, fell out of love with Facebook but still have the account, but as a paying Reddit customer I held it to higher expectations.

Lemmy seems clunky still, but if Star Trek has taught us anything it’s that the federation is the future. Let’s make it so.

Using pc, via browser (Firefox fork).

Tried the new 2FA option in settings, but it just gives a weird link that my browser cannot open.

How does 2FA work here? (My email, steam login, &etc, 2FA methods send a text message to my phone with a code to input into the website. Easy peasy.)

I'm quite technical, so my best guess is that this 2FA method is aimed at smartphone apps.

ps, Greetings to all. & thanks @Tom for creating a UK feddit.

*edit (as comments aren't working for me yet)* ~ Thank you @GreatAlbatross for the detailed explanation. Good thing I hit "disable 2FA" after the failed attempt.
~ So, best to NOT use it for now (via PC). ~

Growing pains indeed. More testing required for that feature.
(Also TOTP = "top of the pops" to a brit, hehe.)

Well, looks like Feddit (I hope there's a German one called Deddit) is now my home. I've been here a while and am enjoying the more intimate atmos.

Over the last couple of weeks I've downloaded all my reddit posts and comments, deleted all my reddit posts and comments and now, today, deleted my account.

Goodbye /u/TheWrongFusebox, you were a blast.

I have an account on feddit.uk and lemmy.world with almost identical subscriptions.

When I visit the feddit.uk homepage and look at posts from my subscriptions sorted by "hot", the two posts immediately after the two pinned Feddit UK posts at the top are 6 days old. The behaviour with "active" is similar. Posts shown are quite old, and neither hot nor active.

When I visit the lemmy.world homepage and look at the "hot" posts from my subscriptions, the first 10 are all with the last couple of hours. Active shows posts in the last 24 hours with a healthly number of comments.

Both servers are running 0.17.4

Basically, right now feddit.uk is almost unusable for me due to both hot and active being populated by stale posts. I need to search by "new" to get anything approaching useful - but when I do that there is just too much to sift through.

I am having a big issue with external communities not subscribing. Many are stuck in "Subscribe Pending". I found a link to a related GitHub issue that might be helpful for Tom to look at. Unsubscribing and resubscribing is not working on the Feddit instance.

Feddit UK continues to grow, and as such @tom@feddit.uk is going to need to spend more time and money on hosting, moderation, and general tinkering. Using the Ko-Fi link is good for giving the odd one-off donation, but perhaps an OpenCollective account (like some of the Mastodon servers are using) would be a longer-term approach.

I've been trying to join nintendoswitch@kbin.social for a few days. Going to https://feddit.uk/c/nintendoswitch@kbin.social gives me a 404. Using the same URL on a couple other Lemmy instances (eg lemmy.world) seems to work. Is there an issue preventing new communities/magazines from federating properly to feddit.uk?

I can happily see the mander@mander.xyz community but cannot see communities such as biology@mander.xyz or natural_process_art@mander.xyz when using my feddut.uk account. Might be happening for communities on other instances but I haven't noticed if that's the case.

I have since made a lemmy.world account where I have no trouble doing so. Would love to stay on this instance long term - the local timeline is really great here (great going instance admins and mods)!

Just posting this to bring attention as I'm hoping this teething problem can be figured out at some point when the admins have some time to do so.

A new version of Jerboa is out, and I was immediately greeted by a popup saying the instance version is on 0.17.4 (?) and Jerboa won't work correctly until it is upgraded to 0.18.

The app just crashed when I tried to upvote a comment, so is kinda unusable, and downgrading isn't ideal.

Are there plans to upgrade?

I would @ tom, but seems that isn't working in the app either sadly.

Feddit UK is great but at the moment there aren't any World News communities based on this server. UnitedKingdom@feddit.uk seems to be covering UK news which make sense.

There obviously doesn't need to be a specific separate community on every instance due to the nature of the fediverse, but I do wonder whether a World News community based on Feddit UK would be something a bit more unique that people might engage with?

The idea would be for people to post World News but preferrably from UK News sources (although not exclusively or too strictly) and to foster discussions that would be likely be more from UK users perspectives as it's based on Feddit UK? It's something that doesn't really work on Reddit but in the Fediverse a general community on big global servers and more regionalised communities seem to be something that co-exist? There can be News@feddit.UK and separate News@feddit.de and so on

Or would it be unnessary duplication and risk diluting communities that need to grow, build content and be broad appealat this stage? Also are some things just better done on a global scale to stop things being an echo chamber?

I actually really enjoy this, it’s really cool to login each day and only see UK specific content in a similar style of the subreddits of old, and with most of the features of Reddit. Previously I had to have them with a multi reddit, but my home page was full of world wide content.

I like that due to federation I can still look at content from around the world but it’s not my default experience. Feels more personalised.
