The Magical Fruit

The Oromo people would customarily plant a coffee tree on the graves of powerful sorcerers. They believed that the first coffee bush sprang up from the tears that the god of heaven shed over the corpse of a dead sorcerer.

As per title. I see many about, but the youtube reviews down on them, or they're large. Are there any decent ones?

It's weird. I have been working from the office 5 days a week instead of the normal 2-3 days for a few months.

Now I only get to have my nice V60 coffee on the weekends because my 1 hour to 1h15 commute time takes up too much time.

I end up using the work coffee machine, which does grind whole beans for my coffee at work. It is very inconsistant. The same setting often gives either watery coffee or overextracted coffee depending on how it feels that minute.

It has made me really enjoy and savor my weekend coffee much more than when I was having good coffee every day. Like the contrast made me realize how good it already was without chasing a better grinder/better water/better methods.

Does anyone else have this sort of experience?

Cup for heating water, water heating coil, and instant coffee from Verve. It's extremely meh, but so so much better than the coffee pods offered 😁

One of my fav local roasters. They were hosting a pop-up by Tacos Sincero serving "Cumin Fermented Plum Congee, sous vide egg, pickled tindora, carrot, cherry chili jam, scallion, sesame, lemongrass chili salsa" (which was delicious)

Coffee-wise had a pourover of a natural Kenyan coffee which was interesting, as Mother Tongue mostly does washed coffees. And a very good iced latte.

I've been really happy with the following lately:

16g:275ml coffee:water, coffee ground on the fine side of medium. Wet paper filter, 205 degrees Fahrenheit water, conventional brew, 10 minute extraction, swirl to settle grounds to bottom of the press, and a gentle plunge.

It's considerably more work than a prismo recipe, but I think its well worth it

I wonder how (not) far the coffee industry might have gone without caffeine to kick it off in the first place. Ah, the circle of ~~life~~ ~~coffee~ ~ caffeine

Also touches on a bunch of other stuff like why to grind coarser and the mechanics of percolation vs. immersion.

Does anyone have a good suggestion for a manual coffee grinder? I have heard folks discuss the Peugeot grinders, but I want to see about alternatives.

Curious as I've yet to pick up a flat bottom brewer. The Orea seems nice and it's good to support smaller makers, but the filter negotiation process seems a little over the top.

In case anyone has been looking for a high-clarity hand grinder for pourover, especially folks in Canada and the US.

Additional datum: a fair number of people who bought grinders in the second run reported that the grinders are very slow, which was not the case with the first run, and doesn't seem to be true of all the new ones either. However, folks mostly still seem to like the grind quality. It's unclear to me what could change the speed of the grinder only, other than possibly machining oils inside the grinder or mechanical changes to the burr assembly or other internals, which nobody has reported.

A while ago, I went to this coffee shop that serves coffee in two different cups. One is a ceramic "aroma" cup, and the other one is more similar to a wine glass.

They said that I should be able to taste the same coffee differently.

Crazily enough I thought I did taste the coffee differently. The one from the ceramic cup felt more bodied, while the one from the wine glass felt lighter and more acidic.

It makes me wonder, is that difference simply coming from the power of suggestion, or does it have a scientific basic to it?

What about you? What's your favorite coffee cup/mug? Have you experimented with drinking the same coffee from different cups as well?

Cheers.

Are there any other home-roasters in the community? I live in an area where the commercially available coffee tends to be pre-ground and stale. Over the years, I've started roasting my own coffee. Feel free to chime in to this post if you do the same or if you're curious about it and we can compare notes on technique!

-Two large tsps of instant coffee
-Dissolve with hot water in the bottom of the cup
-Stir, add milk
-Put ice in glass, move coffee to your glass

Cheaper than Starbucks
I'm gonna try this with ground coffee and different types of milk. Overall the coffee sets the taste and intensity while the milk sets the texture of the coffee. (Make coffee in a cup then move it to a glass when milk is added to avoid breaking the glass)
