sorry on the late reply here, but do you have "Show Read Posts" turned on in your User Settings? that could be one reason you're not seeing everything.

[–] smorks@lemmy.ca 9 points 8 months ago

very nice! i've been using the fork for a while now, and it's been rock solid. glad to see it will be available on fdroid soon.

[–] smorks@lemmy.ca 2 points 10 months ago

thank you, at least that clears things up.

that article is super confusing. the first paragraph reads:

Canada has reversed course after initially blocking a Russian anti-war activist from receiving citizenship because she had run afoul of Moscow’s harsh laws criminalizing dissent over the invasion of Ukraine.

which makes it sound like they allowed her to be a citizen, but the rest of the article is about how it didn't let her.

it doesn't appear to be easy to do either of those, from some quick testing. Looks like the

tags have bottom spacing which is causing the issue, mainly, at least in lemmy's case. weird.

i think if you put less whitespace in between it will format a bit better?

Hello All,

Our current admins have busy lives, but we want to make sure we're still on top of growing and maintaining lemmy.ca. As such we've decided to add two new admins to help out. Please welcome @otter@lemmy.ca and @mp3@lemmy.ca. Both have been active with generating reports and keeping the site free from spammers and trolls, and both have experience moderating other communities too. We are confident they will help make the site even better!

[–] smorks@lemmy.ca 5 points 11 months ago

thanks, it's been dealt with.

[–] smorks@lemmy.ca 11 points 11 months ago (3 children)

yes, I've banned it and removed all it's content.

[–] smorks@lemmy.ca 11 points 11 months ago (1 children)

thanks, community has been removed and user has been banned.

[–] smorks@lemmy.ca 14 points 11 months ago (2 children)

I'd prefer it if you don't renew until we figure something else out. I know they had plans to start a non profit but not sure where that's at. Sorry for the inconvenience.

if it's winter and really cold I'll let the car run for a bit before going. also have to clear ice/snow off the car sometimes too.

This is a little late, but I figure that it's better late than never!

For full transparency, I'm just going to give a high level overview of the financial situation of lemmy.ca through June 2023, when I started to accept donations.

Total Expenses: $30.00

This includes all hosting fees, including backups, etc.

Total Contributions: $1,503.03

 • $1,184.84 through LiberaPay
 • $318.19 through OpenCollective

All contribution amounts are not including payment processor and/or OpenCollective fees.

Remaining Balance: $1,473.03

I plan on transferring the remaining balance to the new admin team, whenever they are ready to accept it.

Thank you to all that have contributed so far, I couldn't have gotten the instance to where it is now without your generosity. I'm very excited to see what comes next and look forward to watching the instance grow more!

As you may have already noticed, 3 new admins have been added. Welcome @TruckBC@lemmy.ca , @Shadow@lemmy.ca , and @Jarcode@lemmy.ca! There are also many more people that are helping behind the scenes as well. They have many years of experience moderating various subreddits, and I believe that they can bring lemmy.ca to the next level.

We have been collaborating so that they will be taking over hosting this instance. When I initially volunteered to take over this instance early in 2022, I was thinking it would just be a hobby project, and I really had no idea what I was getting myself into. With the surge of new users in the past few weeks, and potentially a lot more to come soon, I decided that I don't have the time or energy required to dedicate to running this site, and it just so happened that they were looking for a new home too.

@crb@lemmy.ca and I will stay on as an admin while we transition to a new server, just to make sure everything goes smoothly, but I plan on removing myself as an admin once everything is settled. I will try and stay active here as a user, because I believe that lemmy and the fediverse can become something great!

I have also suspended donations for the time being, but thank you to all that have already donated. All your current donations will be transferred to the new admins.

I have also upgrade the server to 8 CPU's and 8 GB, since it seemed to be struggling with an influx of new users tonight, so sorry about the brief downtime!

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask!

Release Notes

edit: don't forget to enable 2FA, since it's now supported!

edit2: seems like federation with mastodon (and maybe others?) is broken, tried with a few different instances, including lemmy.ml. 😥

I'm planning on upgrading lemmy to v0.18.0 tonight, probably around 9pm CDT. So there will be a bit of downtime, but I don't think it should take too long.

Release Announcement: https://lemmy.ca/post/862306

edit: kids baseball game went long, should start around 10pm CDT.

edit2: going to start in about 5 minutes. 9:55pm CDT.

edit3: looks like we're updated. let me know if you notice any issues!

I mentioned in one of my previous posts that emails from lemmy.ca didn't appear to be working for a small number of people. This issue should hopefully resolved now. Please let me know if you aren't receiving them still.

Also, I created a !meta@lemmy.ca community, where all the news about this instance will go. I'll cross post it to main for a while before switching over to meta only eventually.

Wow, we have doubled in size in around a week! Next week should be interesting!

Hello all!

I've got a few things to announce.

We've grown by over 200 users since May 30. That's about 28 users/day, which is huge compared to what it's been before that. I'm very happy to see the increased activity, and hope this place (and lemmy/the fediverse in general) will become the goto spot for social interactions and link sharing. I'm excited for what the future will bring! Also thanks to many of you for making me laugh in your registration applications.

As this server grows, I think it would be a good idea to have some admins (I'm thinking 2 to start), to help with approving new user registrations, and dealing with Reports. Ideally, I'd like to leave most reports up to the community moderators, but for things that go against the site-wide rules, I'd like to have a team of 3 so we can deal with these things as a group. I haven't fully decided on how I will pick the admins, but I will make another post when I'm ready to do that.

I've thought about a new logo for lemmy.ca. Are there any graphic designers here that would like to create a new logo? I don't really have anything in mind other than something to do with Canada, obviously.

Lastly, since some users have asked, I've setup two places where users can donate to support the server. The monthly costs to run the server is currently around $25 CAD/month, which includes weekly backups (which I may change to daily). Anyways, donations are completely optional, but greatly appreciated! They can be made here:

https://liberapay.com/lemmy.ca/
https://opencollective.com/lemmy-ca

I'll add those links to the main sidebar as well.

If you have any feedback for anything above, let me know!

Sorry for the extended downtime, I messed up when attempting to copy over the media. I should have just rsync'd it to begin with, rather than attempting to compress it first.

Anyways, everything looks to be working, but it may take a bit for DNS to be updated for everyone.

Let me know if you have any issues!

There has been a steady trickle of new users here today, and in the past little while, mostly due to the bad decisions that reddit is currently making.

Anyways, welcome! Feel free to look around, and if you have any questions about anything lemmy related, feel free to ask!

Also, if you feel up to it, introduce yourself in the comments below!

edit: Here's a nice getting started guide for lemmy: https://tech.michaelaltfield.net/2023/06/11/lemmy-migration-find-subreddits-communities/

i should have added it here a while ago!

it was recommended for all instances. it would definitely cut down on spammers, but may discourage actual users from signing up too? just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on the matter.

if you're wondering who i am, i previously posted in the announcements community, but didn't realize that there aren't many subscribers there, i've taken over the hosting of lemmy.ca.
