It might be that bad. Most 'damage' (as publishers see it) comes from distribution, not the download itself. Depending on how they acquired the books, it might be not be much of a problem.
If productivity increases by x% they are going to fire x% of the workforce and give the saved money to themselves.
Or more realistically, they fire x+5 percent, just to see if you work slaves can't be worked a bit harder.

Well if you are serious: try to find a job abroad. Immigration is a lot easier if you already have a job lined up.
Try to get a job in Europe. Having a job is crucial for immigration. The European job benefits will look like heaven coming from the US.
Also Europe is normally a bit slower with tech than the US, so you might find your niche here.

And don't forget how one bakery could pay their employees only the bare minimum, cut corners where they can and use the profit to undercut the 'good' bakery until the 'good' bakery goes bankrupt and the 'bad' bakery can simply be a local monopoly and raise prices as they like.
