Unionized machinists at Boeing voted Monday to accept a contract offer and end their strike after more than seven weeks.

Leaders of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers district in Seattle said 59% of members who cast ballots agreed to approve the company’s fourth formal offer and the third put to a vote. The deal includes pay raises of 38% over four years, and ratification and productivity bonuses.

However, Boeing refused to meet strikers’ demand to restore a company pension plan that was frozen nearly a decade ago.

The average annual pay of Boeing machinists is currently $75,608 and eventually will rise to $119,309 under the new contract, according to the company.

I was in a bit of a soft argument (where nobody was insulting another or being cutthroat and illogical) with a friend about something they were venting about. And we got to a part of the discussion where he admitted that he would rather be a 'robot' who wakes up, looks in the mirror, goes about their job and is 'okay' with it.

Like he didn't understand why it is that people seek so much escapism to be away from dealing with the bleak, always-gloomy mentality of work. I brought up a point that we're all essentially working our asses off to make other people's lives better than ours, those people being managers/CEOs/Executives.

And that we need our escapism to better handle it. Because that's really the reality of work as it is now and has been for essentially decades and decades. It's not that we can't accept the reality, because we already do, it's when we have to step away from our homes, spend however many hours in places we don't like being in, exhausting ourselves, stressing ourselves, spending however long in commute back and to. That's our way of accepting the reality as much as we hate it.

I respect my friend for being one of the few that can just shrug it off and go about business as usual. But, I don't like it when people look down at others and wonder "why do you play so much video games?" or "why do you just binge so many shows and movies?" .etc

...Why not? What's the alternative? Just work ourselves like "ohhh boy! I can't wait to get all of these bills in the mail, both electronically and physically! oh boy!". As well as just get excited for yet another drawn out workday where some of us fear for our jobs?

That's not how things should be, to me. It never should've been like this.

German carmaker warns of stagnation in the European sector amid news of deeper-than-expected action

The German carmaker Volkswagen is planning to shut at least three factories in its home country, lay off thousands of workers and cut pay by 10%, according to the company’s union.

The deeper-than-expected cuts come as the company faces weak sales and slow expansion in the electric vehicle (EV) sector amid tough competition from Chinese manufacturers.

“The board wants to close at least three factories in Germany,” the works council chief, Daniela Cavallo, told employees at VW’s headquarters in Wolfsburg on Monday. Its remaining manufacturing sites will reduce capacity, she said, citing information provided by management.

As Europe’s top economy suffers a crisis in manufacturing and fears of mass unemployment, VW is aiming for a fundamental restructuring to cut costs. It had initially warned last month that it had the equivalent of two factories of extra capacity in Germany.

Microsoft boss Satya Nadella will earn a wallet-busting $79.1m (£60.9m) this financial year, up 63 percent on his compensation for 2023.

The huge boost to Nadella's pay in both cash and stock, announced by Microsoft last night, comes after a positive year overall for the company's financial revenues - but a turbulent 12 months for its employees.

2024 has seen two mass layoffs at Microsoft, with 1900 staff laid off in January, before a further 650 Xbox employees were shown the door in September.

Boeing workers on the West Coast of the United States have voted to reject the aircraft giant’s latest contract offer and extend their nearly six-week strike.

Nearly two-thirds of workers rejected the offer, which included a 35 percent wage rise over four years but did not restore a defined pension plan sought by many employees, the Seattle branch of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union said on X.

About 33,000 workers have been on strike since mid-September when union members overwhelmingly rejected Boeing’s proposal for a new four-year contract.

On Wednesday, the company reported a third-quarter loss of more than $6bn.

Screw your workers for 30+ years, move your production, make them embarrassed with your company name by eliminating engineering excellence and outsourcing quality to lowest bidder, withhold raises for a decade, remove a real retirement plan and see what happens.

Good for them.
