They don't appear to have federation enabled yet.

That's the plan. More than likely a final post in each community with a link to its new home will be stickied as well.

Early on we were experimenting with trying to offer everything on the fediverse from a Lemmy instance. A lot of changes and tweaks were made to try to make that work before it was abandoned. There's a lot of leftover bloat from that project that we've been trying to deal with without too much impact to the Lemmy instance but for the size of the instance it makes more sense to start over than to spend even more time trying to undo the wrongs of the past. There isn't a specific cautionary tale here besides "don't go public with things that you hope to fix later."

More recently we've had issues with our registrar or DNS pop up that no one seems to have answers for yet, so sometimes the domain itself isn't reachable. One problem or the other might not be a huge deal in the short term but together they make for a miserable time trying to sort things out. Moving the traffic to a known good config will help me maintain sanity while dealing with the issues at WG.

Hello again All,

I’d like to get everyone up to speed on what’s been going on with walledgarden.xyz and where it’s going in the near future. I’ll keep this as brief as I can but there’s a lot to cover. TLDR at the bottom.

First and most important- As of March 1st 2025 WG will effectively shut down. Local communities will be locked but the instance will stay open for at least all of March so that local users have time to migrate their accounts.

  • Why? What does this mean? WG was initially set up as a private instance to learn about and experiment with Lemmy. With that mindset a lot of things were tested on the live instance before we started hosting communities and users. A new instance or test environment should've been put in place back then, but it wasn't. That's on me and I apologize. Many of these things are difficult or impossible to reverse while the instance is available to the public and are causing stability problems for the users and communities we host. This isn't the experience we want to offer. The difficult decision was made to shutter this instance and start fresh on a new one. We decided that it would be better to offer people a new alternative that doesn't suffer from the same problems we have on WG before the communities or user numbers grow any larger. WG will eventually become the test environment for the new instance.

  • What happens to the users and communities you host? The local users are who will suffer the most from this and for that I am genuinely sorry. Local users will have until at least the end of March to migrate before any kind of reset is done. This should offer plenty of time to get your new accounts setup. If anyone is having trouble shoot me a DM and I'll do whatever I can to help out. Our current users are welcome to join us on the new instance- https://crazypeople.online/. The last few days have been spent launching and populating that instance with new versions of the communities you’re used to seeing around WG. Here’s a list of our local communities and their new homes:

I encourage those of you who previously participated in our communities to join us again at our new home.

One final thing to note is that crazypeople.online will not be federated with lemmy.world until after they complete their upgrade. That could be any day now unless they push the date back. The older version of Lemmy they run can cause problems for smaller instances that I’d like to avoid on the new one. This decision isn’t meant to be political or controversial and is based strictly on performance goals.

TLDR

  • WG is becoming a test instance.
  • Users have until at least March 31st 2025 to migrate.
  • Replacements for our communities have already been set up at https://crazypeople.online/.
  • crazypeople.online will be our public facing instance going forward, open to old WG members and anyone else who needs a place to call home.
  • crazypeople.online won’t be federated with lemmy.world until their planned update.
  • Don’t test in production.

Lemmy has mangled that script a bit.

Lemmy seems to mangle a lot of links that aren't basic urls. SimpleX chat links break for some reason here too.

Thank you for the suggestions. At this point it seems the best option may be to just shutter this instance and start over with a fresh database instead of dealing with a bunch of nagging problems from previous experiments. I've done plenty of testing in production because for most of that time it was only me being affected by the consequences lol.

By the time Black Sabbath are due on stage it'll be past their bedtime.

TLDR- Is there another/better way to purge communities from the database besides doing it one at a time from the webui?

I tried getting a list of communities with curl by adding subscribers_local=0 to the string since that's how they show up in the DB but it doesn't seem to be recognized at all, and the request returns all communities that meet the other criteria. That pretty much kills purging via API since I would have to do it one at a time and manually compile the list...Is there a better/faster/less manual way to somehow purge communities based on that criteria besides finding them from the webui and purging them one at a time? This is for hundreds of communities so any level of automation would help.

TLDR UPDATE: Lemmy.world is ~9hrs behind and catching back up. We won't be making any more changes until this is completed.

Original Post:

Please be aware that we are undergoing some maintenance and configuration testing with our host. Instance performance may be a little unstable.

As some of you may know we've been troubleshooting sync issues with several instances but mainly lemmy.world. After a week of experimenting we were able to get everything caught back up and we are now working to optimize instance performance in a way that maintains the sync. The short explanation is that lemmy.world is running an older version of Lemmy that only processes about half the information an instance on a more modern build of Lemmy does per exchange. This leads to a problem where you must be able to match the sending rate of the largest instance or else they fall out of sync and eventually cause more problems as it falls further behind.

There may be a couple of extended restarts over the next couple days as we adjust and readjust to get things right. As always feel free to report any problems here or via DM. Your patience is always greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hello again,

Some unfortunate news to pass along this time. As the title implies WG is suffering from an issue that has broken automatic title lookups/suggestions and preview thumbnails for posts. This coincided with our update to Lemmy 19.9. After confirming things were working correctly with our host we are now investigating the issue further. Our host believes it may be a bug with the latest Lemmy buiild but since this was a security update it would be unwise to roll back to 19.8.

I'll try to keep this post updated with anything new as more information is available. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Community Clean Up (walledgarden.xyz)
submitted 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) by FrostyTrichs@walledgarden.xyz to c/communitycorkboard@walledgarden.xyz

Hello again,

Today we'll be doing some database management and pruning some of the communities that are obviously abandoned or inactive. We're prioritizing the removal of communities that our members aren't subscribed to so the impact to most of you should be minimal. If we happen to remove a community you were subscribed by accident you should be able to resubscribe to them without issue.

This maintenance will be happening off and on over the next several days. Expect an instance restart or two here and there. The restarts only take a few seconds so if you run into an error just give it a second or two and try again.

As always feel free to report any wonky behavior here or DM me. Thanks for your patience.

Sorry, I completely forgot to announce !pokemonTCGP@walledgarden.xyz here when I launched it.

Now trading is here and we're having fun swapping cards. Come check us out!

Hello all,

We're adding additional resources to the server and making some configuration changes today that will require a brief restart or two. During the restarts you may be unable to use your local account, and our communities and hosted images may be briefly unavailable. The restarts should come and go within a few minutes of this post.

Apologies for any inconvenience and thank you for understanding.

The migration to our new email service has been completed and registration is back open. Thanks for your patience!

Shelf to table? Lentils AF (walledgarden.xyz)
submitted 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) by FrostyTrichs@walledgarden.xyz to c/homecooks@vegantheoryclub.org

I sprouted some lentils and let them grow into greens instead of eating them as soon as they had tails this time and HOLY CRAP have I been missing out. The fresh greens have a taste that's very similar to fresh snow peas and I am IN LOVE. They worked out great in this simple stir fry of onions, garlic, lentils, sesame seeds, and spices. Full size pics below.

Sprouts that I totally haven't been snacking on every time I mist them...

Sprouts

Tasty lunch with the same sprouts.

Yum

We ran into a problem recently when trying to send SimpleX links on Lemmy. No matter what if a link was sent the recipient would get an error message instead of being invited to the room. After some trial and error we figured out that the QR code was the only way to send someone a working SimpleX invitation on Lemmy. If you send a link or post one something on Lemmy causes it to never resolve to the correct address and appear that the room is gone.

I'm not sure exactly what's going wrong but if you're having trouble sending links to others or having problems joining rooms from links on Lemmy give the QR code a try before you give up.
