Looks like they have space for one beach between Ploce and Dubrovnik

My wife and I took a cruise for our honeymoon that stopped in Kotor, Montenegro. For fun, we rented a car and drove up to Split in Croatia along the sea. That means we got to drive through that strip of Bosnia. We stopped and had lunch at a little pizza place in Neum, Bosnia.

The people in the pizza place asked us how in the world we came to be there. 😆

How long ago was this? A road trip along this route I think is pretty common and Dubrovnik is a very popular tourist destination these days, especially since they joined the Schengen area.

[–] DrRatso@lemmy.ml 4 points 6 months ago

Its been common for a while, but I think the point is people dont really stop there

[–] Lemmy_2019@lemmy.one 2 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Kotor looks gorgeous. Is it any way interesting there?

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

I know this is due to context, but "is KOTOR interesting" is a very entertaining question.

(I hope this isn't offensive. It's not meant to be.)

There's a lot and it is quite beautiful. We just had an afternoon so we hired a small boat to take us out to Our Lady of the Rocks island church. It was awesome!

[–] mihor@lemmy.ml 6 points 6 months ago

Yeah, they actually built a goddamn huge Pelješac bridge last year to circumvent this part, so if you're travelling along the croatian coast down to Dubrovnik you don't need to cross the Neum border any longer. They actually spent like half a billion euros on that project just out of spite. That's the balkan thing.

Herzegovina: Can I be first this month?

Bosnia: No.

[–] darthsid@lemmy.world 23 points 6 months ago

Wtf Croatia, that’s not fair! Learn to share!

That's actually really interesting!

TL;DR they gave the coast to the Ottoman Empire hundreds of years ago for free because they were tired of fighting invaders from the sea. Free protection in exchange for cities they weren't able to defend anyway.

Man. That story turns the whole situation on its head. Fascinating. Thanks!

That's a weird fricking boarder if I've ever seen one...

[–] SPRUNT@lemmy.world 20 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Like a Republican voting map.

[–] rekabis@lemmy.ca 6 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Republicans have always been at the top of the leaderboard when it comes to corruption-based gerrymandering.

The Illinois Democrats have some stuff going on too. I mention this not to “both sides 🤪” but because it’s important to be aware of the non-fascists’ wrongdoings too, so you aren’t caught off guard by occasional accurate information from corrupt fascists. Wasn’t that the state where the governor tried to sell Obama’s seat after he became president?

Edit: fixed link

[–] Olhonestjim@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Hey, didn't Trump pardon that governor?

[–] MyEdgyAlt@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 months ago

Commuted his sentence. I guess his love for corruption exceeds his opposition to Democrats, but we know that. His love of corruption exceeds everything.

Most of the towns along the sea were parts of the Venetian Republic and share a lot of common culture through that. There's no dividing them at this point.

Croatia: "Hold my beer, watch me landlock this MFer right here..."

[–] Hawk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 6 months ago

They failed though

[–] TheFriar@lemm.ee 10 points 6 months ago

Chile has entered the chat.

Bolivia has ragequit.

[–] ganksy@lemmy.world 9 points 6 months ago

On the flip side, at least they don't need much border security. Unless it's Croatia invading.

[–] Resol@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago

Ok maybe you can swim but I've made a whale sized territory especially for you
