One of my favourite scenes in the 1993 movie "Stalingrad" is Germany soldiers sitting in a ruin, freezing and hungry, listening to the radio to keep themselves occupied.

There is a speech of Hitler where he jokes around and says that Stalingrad is going well and that it won't be his Verdun. Tells tales of how amazing the Wehrmacht is doing and their glorious battles, all while you can see the ragged soldiers with stone cold faces knowing all too well that this is bullshit.

They are kinda making progress, but slowly and with huge losses. And all they win is a few blocks of more ruins and more dead comrades to bury.

The early war tanks and the Sturmgeschütze (tank hunters) never had these issues, they were a thing in late war where the new tank models came from drawing board to full production and Use within a year, and then there was the whole problem with recourses, iron and coal where not the problem, it was qualified humans and molybdenum that basically fucked the German tanks in later war.

Russias equipment is falling apart from day one.

Edit: fucking autocorrect!

I watched Enemy At The Gates yesterday and was thinking that there are distinct similarities with what's happening in Ukraine today.

Not a particularly historically accurate movie, unfortunately.
