“ Donald Trump lashed out Tuesday at a pair of cable networks not named Fox News for their decision not to air all of his Iowa caucuses victory speech as it happened, suggesting that what they did was so heinous that they should “have their licenses, or whatever they have, taken away.”

Dictators gonna dictate.

CNN and NBC will both breathlessly cover the Trumpification of America—their anchors and field reporters squealing about how exciting it all is—right up until the moment when a Trump FCC that does not give one shit about the law, starts shutting down their facilities. Only then, when its way too late and they’ve lost their platform, will they realize that fascist takeovers aren’t a fucking game to be covered like celebrity dating drama.

[–] LEDZeppelin@lemmy.world 115 points 10 months ago

CNN is literally following their own 2016 election playbook giving him non-stop coverage and downplaying any risk he poses to the constitution and democracy.

Fuck CNN.

I overheard a FOX broadcast last night while waiting for a pizza pickup in their lobby.

Holy crap that is awful. I remember it back in the GWB days and I don't recall it being nearly as bad as it was last night.

"Democrats don't want to understand you. They just want power." followed by cherrypicked video footage of out of context comments from some random person. "If the Democrats get in charge, they will outlaw jesus!" followed by more bad faith video footage where someone said Christianity doesn't belong in a courtroom setting.

It's like they have distilled down the essence of making your grandma scared and forcing her to vote or else her grand babies will literally get eaten alive because they weren't aborted.

[–] Asafum@lemmy.world 26 points 10 months ago (1 children)

This is exactly our problem.

Yes yes Trump is absolutely an issue, but it's propaganda outlets that are ruining the country. I have no solution to that problem. It's important to have a free press, but they are 100% taking advantage of that.

They stupidly set the stage for people like Trump, but they think they're just doing R vs D shit so they can get their asshole of choice into power. Well the people tend to get more crazy than anyone would prefer so you open the door for them and you have no control over who enters.

We've implemented the principle of free speech in a way that denies that fact that vast swathes of people are idiots who will believe anything, and that failure has been weaponized against us.

Nobody should have to right to rile up credulous morons with ridiculous lies.

[–] Scotty_Trees@lemmy.world 19 points 10 months ago

Not just Fox "News" but all the alt-right AM radio pundits too. While visiting my parents, I overheard his AM radio speaker downplay events by saying that E. Jean Carroll only "claims" Trump did things, while totally ignoring the fact that Trump was already convicted of sexual assault and the judge later confirmed it was indeed classified as rape, and he had to pay her $5 million for defamation, which now there's ANOTHER court case going on that's bad for Trump, but all of those pesky facts weren't mentioned, only that E. Jean Carroll was a vindictive slut. Truly maddening to me when you know the objective facts, I call it Conservative brain rot.

[–] Wrench@lemmy.world 14 points 10 months ago

It was essentially the same back then too. Those were the days of Glenn Beck mapping out insane conspiracy theories every day.

The Newsmax model

[–] dangblingus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 10 months ago (1 children)

In the early to mid 00s, Fox News was just the "Arab people are scary!" network and wasn't that batshit insane yet.

I don’t recall it being nearly as bad as it was last night.

Your memory is faulty. Fox News has been like this from day one (which was October 7th, 1996).

[–] Numpty@lemmy.ca 3 points 10 months ago (3 children)

This is what they are telling each other... technologically advanced mermaids are out to get you: https://twitter.com/patriottakes/status/1657868909716951041

[–] whostosay@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I did not believe you. What the fuck is going on. At this point I feel like I'm losing my fucking mind trying to point out to people that they need to vote because the otherside has been eating this shit up and ready to get violent about it if they are not already.

I hate the fact that I have to think about whether I am going to flee the country if they gain a majority rule.

Please get out and vote, everyone, no matter how hard they make it to do so.

[–] Numpty@lemmy.ca 1 points 10 months ago

Amazing isn't it? There are people saying these insane things... and the audience is lapping it up. Agreeing. Begging for more.

I'm not American. I'm looking in with horror, confusion, and sadness.

what the hell... these people are taking someones larp campaign and treating it as reality

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 68 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

They wouldn't cover his speech, but they'll all run this story about him complaining about that...

Which is effectively the same thing, and even better for his supporters because this will be spun as "corrupt media can't silence trump, he's too strong!"

If you're going to ignore a troll like trump, you have to commit. Giving in later because the troll keeps insulting you just makes it look like they were able to drag you into it.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 38 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Huh. I thought these types were bitching about "cancel culture" all the time, and donnie wants entire networks off the air because of his feelz.

Always projection. When the cons talk about snowflakes, they are some of the biggest snowflakes on the planet, all enthusiastic to vote for one of the biggest snowflakes in history.

I am a whiner and I keep whining and whining until I win.

Donald Trump

[–] CitizenKong@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

For anyone wondering, yes he really said that. Rare moment of honesty, like "I don't stand for anything."

They always do what they say they hate. Something something projection.

[–] 2piradians@lemmy.world 35 points 10 months ago

They're showing less of the train wreck than before and denying him some of the free coverage to which he feels entitled. The tantrum was inevitable.

[–] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 29 points 10 months ago (1 children)

We had better deal with this fascist cunt.

Where's Charles Guiteau when you need him!

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

The Ballad of Guiteau tells his story in song.

Personally, I'd rather have Czolgosz.

[–] carl_dungeon@lemmy.world 27 points 10 months ago

I want trump off air for being human garbage

[–] grue@lemmy.world 23 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Dictators gonna dictate.

More like "Tyrants gonna rant." Trump doesn't have the power to dictate the First Amendment away, at least not yet.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I like yours better.

Somehow rules never matter to dictators.

[–] lolcatnip@reddthat.com 4 points 10 months ago

It's kind of the defining feature of dictators.

[–] dangblingus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 10 months ago (2 children)

So he wants to limit freedom of the press and freedom of speech?

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 14 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

He’s been pretty clear he wants to silence opposition and critics, that includes the press.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

He's been butthurt about the mockery of his tiny hands for decades. He still has a chip on his shoulder over Obama and Seth mocking him at the correspondent's dinner. He probably thought they were going to give him some kind of shiny trophy or something when he went....

He also whined about SNL mocking him during his residency and wanted something done about it.

Sounds a lot like something a dictator would want.

[–] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 13 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Honestly, they did him a favor. They aired the beginning part. And in the beginning he was uncharacteristically on-message and gracious. The end got into his terribly unpopular policies.

I say fuck it. Air the rest. Let people be reminded about how terrifying he is.

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Big Brother lets you have Hate Week 52 weeks a year.

[–] lagomorphlecture@lemm.ee 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

The best way to ensure he doesn't get elected is for him to piss off the corporations and I would say 2 big ones like this could do some damage to him. Keep running your mouth about stuff like that and see. Better yet demand fox news be taken off air, they might actually turn people against him.

[–] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Nothing will happen. They love the publicity and money it brings in

[–] lagomorphlecture@lemm.ee 5 points 10 months ago

If he becomes a dictator like he wants he WILL attack his enemies, including media.

[–] xc2215x@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Not showing a speech should be allowed.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

Not once the Southern notion of "liberty" really gets going.

I could be wrong, but I believe it was a CBS executive who once said that covering Trump the way they do was absolutely terrible for democracy in this country and that he is a real danger to our way of life -- but they were still going to keep covering him anyway because covering him is absolutely great for their bottom line.
