General off-topic chat for the crew of startrek.website. Trek-adjacent discussions, other sci-fi television, navigating the Fediverse, server meta (within reason), selling expired cases of Yamok sauce, it’s all fair game.

I remember DS9 reruns on commercial tv yonks ago, might be time to give the series a spin

S1 and S2 are a bit wonky, but S2 features a fav episode of mine (The Blood Oath) and after that DS9 really takes off. Enjoy!

Going to watch Lower Decks and The Animated Series and Prodigy for the first time, might as well.

As for non Star Trek stuff, going to watch Beevis and Butthead episodes I missed on Paramount Plus lol

Interesting, I havent watched any of the animated star treks. Enjoy beevis ans butthead.😆

I’m always stunned to hear from Star Trek fans who haven’t tried any of the animated shows. They may not be to everyone’s taste - but…not to even give them a try?

I understand that there’s a real bias among some against animation as a media form, but even TAS rose above the norms for American Saturday morning cartoons to get the franchise’s only series Emmy.

Anyhow, I keep finding myself encouraging fans to at least give each of the three animated series a run through. Even the two intended for younger audiences - TAS and Prodigy - are really designed to appeal to all ages.

Especially now, with Star Trek Prodigy needing to find a new home, it’s all the more important to give them the support of views. #SaveStarTrekProdigy!

I started with DISCO, then PIC, then SNW. I don't think there's any particular reason I haven't watched TAS, Lower Decks or Prodigy🤔

[–] StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well, whatever the reason, that means you’ve got a lot of yet to be seen Trek content to enjoy.

I’d recommend working through TAS’ 22 short episodes first. Lower Decks makes a lot of callbacks to TAS and even Prodigy has a few.

Thank you I will!

Where can I watch prodigy? I've googled, and I'm confused and sad now.

[–] StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It’s only available to purchase - either as a DVD set or through an Apple,Amazon etc.

At least until it finds a new home.

[–] DharmaCurious@startrek.website 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That blows. Why did they do this? :(

The cancellation was announced just before the end of the last quarter along with a couple of other shows. The justification was better alignment of their core streaming strategy but it wasn’t convincing.

It doesn’t make a lot of sense given that Paramount+ branded itself as the home of all Star Trek and the show was the second most in-demand original animated show on the streamer in 2022 after Lower Decks.

That said, the show was originally intended to be shown on Nickelodeon which has been in a viewership free fall since 2017 as kids have moved away from watching cable. I have to wonder then if the decision on Prodigy may have been more of a decision about extracting Nickelodeon from its share of the expenses.

In any event, buying the show and showing support is a key way to keep building the case for it to find a home on another streamer. There’s also a change.org petition that’s getting close to 35k signatures now.

DVD buying only, or can I buy a digital version? I'm generally too poor to vote with my dollars, but I can probably swing a season of prodigy. Haha.

You can by a digital copy of the full season of 20 episodes through most of the usual digital vendors.

I have a Trek-curious coworker who started watching SNW so that he could participate in the conversation a few of us always have after our Friday standup. Now that there aren't new episodes he said we should pick stuff out of the archives to watch ahead of time and discuss... So tomorrow morning I look forward to his thoughts on Sub Rosa!

I might dive in and watch sub Rosa as well 🙂

If my friend and I have time at the same time this week we need to catch up on "Foundation" and "What We Do in the Shadows."

Our previous thursday sci-fi binges have included rewatches of TOS and Red Dwarf.

Great recommendations thanks 😃

I am re-watching Picard and are near the end of season 2 now. I've found the show to be much better and indeed extremely enjoyable if one binges it. The one episode per week scheme at release when I first watched Picard was really detrimental to such a heavily serialised story, in my opinion. After Picard, I will be re-watching all three seasons of Lower Decks to prepare for the fourth in September.

Being somewhat new to trek, I bought the Picard movie & tv collection box set prior to season 1 airing and thoroughly enjoyed it. Might be a good time to revisit these + picard series😊

Just rewatched Lower Decks and am back on DS9 now. I should probably watch something that isn't Trek though. Didn't realise there was a Snowpiercer s4 coming out soon, looking forward to that!

[–] GummySquirrel@startrek.website 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Yes I've read that snowpiercer s4 is completed but there's no word on which network will air it 😮‍💨

Enjoy DS9!

Fingers crossed it's one of the ones I already have a subscription to 🤞

Re-watching SNW.

[–] jalanhenning@startrek.website 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm slowly and tediously working my way through ST:TNG season 1.

[–] GummySquirrel@startrek.website 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I havent watched much TNG only " the best of both worlds" and "chain of command" as they were in the picard tv & movie collection. If you have any episodes of TNG to recommend please let me know

From the first two, rough seasons: Encounter at Farpoint (to establish Q); Heart of Glory; Conspiracy; The Neutral Zone; A Matter of Honor; Measure of a Man; Q Who; Elementary Dear Data; Samaritan Snare (to introduce a key antagonist in Lower Decks); The Emissary.

If you enjoy these, you may just wish to plow on through seasons 3-6. Season 7 is eccentric.

I’m working through my backlist of things I have never watched, but don’t have a dedicated alternate Thursday evening replacement.

I’m also slowly working through a few shows, including Foundation, with my spouse who is a very occasional television viewer. Thursday SNW has been the very rare ‘appointment television’ watch for them.

I intend to give Lower Decks season three a rewatch before season four premieres.

There isn't that much airing these days that I care about. I've been dipping into my anime collection and I've rewatched Code Geass and I was going to get started on FLCL but I ended up just deciding to watch Voyager. It's been a while since I gave VOY a full run-through. It's a great show for watching before bed.

I might start watching the second season of Foundation, because the first season was rad. Apple TV has been on par with HBO levels of quality.

Futurama has been airing on Sundays I think. That's like, the only show I've been keeping up with. It doesn't feel like there's much worth watching these days.
