The thought that young children are using these suggest they'll suffer issues in their mid twenties which is horrifying, and then the issues could get worse throughout their life.

There's no ionizing radiation given off by cell phones. Guess what, the older you get the chances of brain tumors goes up.

There are generally accepted ages when brain lessions may start to appear. White matter lesions are not what's being described here.

[–] roofuskit@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

At least the benefit of this study is that naive people will spend less time on cell phones.

That’s not how odds ratios (or research) work. The compares groups of cell phone users and non-cell phone users.

With that being said, we’ve always known cell phone use has a correlation with very slightly increased cancer rates. That shouldn’t be controversial. It’s not concluding that there’s a direct cause or even, if they did cause it, that it’s from RF.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 24 points 2 days ago

Glad you used the word correlation here, because surely high cell phone use can also have a correlation with low physical activity and probably poor diet and other things that amplify the risk for cancer. Could be anything.

Fun fact: Visible light from a lightbulb is both VASTLY more energetic as far as being a higher frequency and in how much power is dished out compared to nearly any communication device.

Anything attempting to claim RF increases cancer or other issues is either hilariously misinformed, brainlessly spreading misinformation, or knowingly spreading misinformation.

Two cohort studies and 16 case-control studies on this topic were identified […] The cohort study was of limited value due to methodological shortcomings in the study.

Thats basically no evidence at all. Case control studies are mostly used to see if there might be some correlation and from that to form a hypothesis for further research.

I'm pretty sure this study from 2007 has been refuted

I always knew cancer caused people to use cell phones!

Edit: on a serious note, the confidence interval for malignant tumors is an odds ratio of 1.2-3.4, although a quick google finds more recent studies (I.e.: not based off of 1990s cell phones) are even lower.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Can confirm. Survived cancer. Haven't survived cell phone addiction.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Good on you for surviving cancer. Here's hoping that you're not a Nazi! ❤️🤞

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm not a nazi! I'm only a monster if you consider a tickle monster to be a monster!

runs off and ties several people to the train track near a lever

Oh, don't worry. This train tracks is abandoned. But it makes for a nice steel spot to tie captives to so they can't squirm away while I tickle their feet! Now where did I put that feather......

train zooms by killing everyone

.....ah, found it OH MY GOD WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED HERE???

[–] tonyn@lemmy.ml 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Some of us still use phones as phones. Shocking and horrifying, I know.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Yeah, who doesn't call someone every once in a while? Call your mom. Call your dad. Call your wife. Your grandma. Your kids! Friends! (Yeah right. Not since I had kids of my own.) Talk to each other!

❤️

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

You dont have earbuds?

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

I haven't held a phone to my ear since before smartphones were a thing. Headsets existed for land lines. Speakerphone functions existed on land lines as well as early regular cell phones (as opposed to dumb phones which tend to have more functions than the ultra basic phones did back in the nineties).

I'm fairly confident that the last time I held a phone to my ear was before the turn of the century. I know it's been that long at least since I would have while driving and/or at work. The cell I had at the time worked better by headset, and there were plenty of cheap and decent ones available

[–] catty@lemmy.world -3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It's ok, they're trying to shift the blame from their product / technology to how the user uses the phone incorrectly, you know, like a phone. Just look at the amount of posts in this thread singing the same tune. Coincidence, right?

[–] catty@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

Noone, they just shout into their phones from approx 3 metres away.

[–] thejml@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Do young children even hold phones near their heads anymore? I rarely see a kid less than their early teens doing anything but FaceTime or games. And after that point, video chats, texting, and doom scrolling.

Even my 15yo daughter never holds the phone against her head.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

You should introduce the concept of N-Gage taco talkin!

[–] catty@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes, when making phone calls they shout at their phone from 3 metres away, everyone knows that.

[–] thejml@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Come on man, Speaker phone, video calling, Snapchat, and just the fact that most of them seem to choose text messaging over phone calls.
