I hate the beep in every form so far, and I avoid using microwaves every chance I get.

[–] TabbsTheBat@pawb.social 13 points 2 days ago

Microwaves stop by themselves? /j

[–] RodgeGrabTheCat@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It beeps 5 times if I don't. Super fuckin annoying, are those beeps.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Almost always.

[–] andrewta@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

The beep from the microwave hurts my ears. So I stop about 1 second before it beeps.

[–] laranis@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Only if I'm standing across the room and my brain calculates that the time it takes to close the distance is within the time remaining on the countdown and I get to do a badass flip, twirl, and slide to stop it just in the nick of time so I get to pretend I have super hero level reflexes.

I cannot do badass flips but the point still stands. I can twirl and slide though, as long as I'm wearing socks.

[–] twice_hatch@midwest.social 6 points 1 day ago

No, if I wanted to microwave something for 57 seconds I'd put 57 seconds in. I don't practice brinksmanship

[–] quediuspayu@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

No, unless I want to set it up for period shorter than what is available but that hardly ever happens.

I usually leave and come back when it beeps.

[–] Ava@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 day ago

Depends on what I'm putting in. There are some plates of leftovers that I've made often enough to just know how long it'll take, so the time is exactly what it needs to be and I can wander away for a second to check the mail or whatever. Popcorn obviously comes out when it's done. If I'm warming a drink in a mug, I'll stop it early if the handle is at a more convenient angle, since otherwise I'm liable to burn myself.

If you time it right, you can stop my microwave on 0. I also like to avoid making noise if I can. So every time I microwave anything it’s a little minigame for me.

Our microwave [Electrolux, in case anyone wants to dig] doesn't beep until like 5 seconds after finishing, it's just silent. I think that's a pretty good feature.

[–] pleasestopasking@reddthat.com 5 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Never knew how much I needed this, holy shit. Mine beeps when it finishes but also beeps again if I haven't opened the door in, idk, some amount of time. Which I get why it's a gesture and sometimes I actually do find it useful but often I'm like "I KNOW, GIMME A MINUTE"

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

With two kids, I feel that. 😆 "LET ME WIPE THIS SHITTY TODDLER BOTTOM FIRST, ALRIGHT?!"

[–] ChaosCoati@midwest.social 2 points 1 day ago

My parents have one of these, and it drives me nuts when I visit. I understand that feature on something like an oven where it’s still cooking. But the microwave stopped. Nothing’s going to burn. So stop rushing me!

Wow. That’s a great feature. I need to look out for it next time. Thank you

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

No problem, hope you find it. 😊👍 For reference, it's an Electrolux one.

No, my microwave has a nice chime instead of a beep

[–] Ephera@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 day ago

Mine does a singular *ding*, which is very appreciated.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (6 children)

Yes, because of the stupid turntable. 1:30, the water isn't hot enough. 2:00, the water is too hot and cup is at the back of the oven. The right amount of time, for tap water, in the summer, is 1:47, that puts the water at the front of the oven at the right temp, but I don't want to punch in 1:47, so I just hit the 2 to start and run the oven for 2 minutes, and then pull the door open at 1:47. Also, no beep that way.

Commercial microwaves, like in a restaurant, have a row of numbered buttons that can be programmed for time and power setting. That's the best way to control a microwave.

[–] Zak@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's the best way to control a microwave.

I remain fond of the analog knob myself.

[–] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 1 day ago

Me too, and it comes with the added benefit of usually having a pleasant "Ding!" instead of the shrieking "BEEEEEP! BEEEEEP! BEEEEEP!" that digital microwaves have. The downside is that you completely lose the precision of a digital timer, which some people (not me) consider a must have in a microwave.

Well yeah that's when the bomb goes off, gotta stop it

[–] randomcruft@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 day ago

Only when microwaving something that might overflow… like oatmeal.

Aside from that… I want every last second of microwaving that I can get and beeping!

[–] Strider@thelemmy.club 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No, but I don't wait for the beeping to stop.

[–] PagPag@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Turning off the sound of my microwave was an ability I was not aware I had. It’s so small of a thing but amazing.

[–] Strider@thelemmy.club 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] PagPag@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Now you have a new feature required on your next one if you can’t already do it.

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Only if I think I set it for too long.

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 0 points 1 day ago

I replaced the microwave with an air fryer, still have the microwave but it lives in a cupboard and only gets used a couple of times a year.

As the air fryer cools for a few seconds before it finishes I usually don't stop it early. I will often open it early to check on the food though.

Only if I hear popping noises (and I am not microwaving popcorn)
