I might have tried it once when I was a kid but it's not as effective as a fingernail so once was enough.

Chin stubble is my hand’s scratching post.

Sometimes the itch feels so deep that just scratching with your nails doesn't cut it.

I don’t even understand what she’s doing. Biting herself as a distraction? Scratching her palm with her teeth? I don’t know anyone who does this.

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 51 points 3 days ago (4 children)

Sometimes scratching just isn't cutting it, and the human brain is...well it's something and it tells me bite the itch cause teeth are stronger and you try and it doesn't help.

[–] thefartographer@lemm.ee 33 points 3 days ago

The nails... They tickle.... The itch is deeper, towards the bone... USE YOUR TEETH.

[–] thejml@lemm.ee 25 points 3 days ago

Oh, but it does. It helps soooo much. Something about the pinpoint pressure in just the right spot just hits so good… But you can’t just keep biting it forever, and generally the itch comes back again soon after.

Well based on votes I’m in the minority. Never heard of this. Whatever works!

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

Oh, I thought maybe she was picking at some skin and then chewing it off.

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 days ago

It's so itchy you bite it to make that spot painful just for a bit to override the itchiness.

Understanding isn't necessary. The call to bite is there and it somehow works, so you don't question it. I don't grind me teeth to mimic scratching - just bite.

I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE???

But seriously though there's something about a palm being itchy, especially the thicker pad where the hand begins to transition into the wrist that just is so much more persistent than anywhere else.

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago

I do, and I'm not even ashamed of it.

puts itching powder on the small of your back

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 5 points 3 days ago (2 children)

oh the old make something else worse to relieve the first thing. Don't know if it will help. Its been itchy like that since puberty.

[–] lath@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Old puritan folklore had it that masturbating would cause hair to grow on one's palm and the intense itching was a sign that someone was doing the deed. Which called for a whooping.

[–] thefartographer@lemm.ee 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

And the whooping is supposed to make me... stop?

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Depends.....are they wearing leather?

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 3 days ago

yep. you got it.

That's why you do it with your teeth.
Weirdo.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago

Why would I lie? I o, heck yeah!

[–] harmsy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Only after cutting up bell peppers without using gloves. The stabbing itch from that is unlike anything else I know.

[–] rockstarmode@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

People have itchy palms? Itchy enough that they bite them?

That's fucking weird.

That's literally never happened to me, it sounds super strange. Are y'all putting stuff on your hands that's tearing up your skin? Do you moisturize regularly?

I have sensitive skin, but spend a lot of time in a kitchen with wet hands. Unscented soap to wash my hands about a dozen times a day, and unscented moisturizer to keep my skin from cracking. I'll use a thicker waxy moisturizer during the winter when it's really dry out.

I use my hands for weightlifting and golf, so I have to manage my callouses, and in the kitchen I'll pick up various small cuts and burns. My hands don't look perfect but they've never.. itched?

[–] untorquer@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Your comment makes you seem shocked like a victorian era man seeing a woman's bare ankle in public.

[–] rockstarmode@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don't know why, but ok?

Itchy palms sounds more like an allergic reaction than a common issue.

[–] untorquer@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's a good example of what i mean. Allergic reactions are common issues.

It's normal to not have an itch and it's normal to itch. Both can be true simultaneously and neither is weird.

Granted it's a comment on Lemmy but at a larger scale this kind of incredulous comment can reinforce stigmas.

[–] rockstarmode@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Having itchy palms because of an allergy might happen commonly in terms of a large population, but it is not common to have this condition. If it happens to you then you should get it looked at instead of biting them. This is the correct and acceptable response. Putting your hands in your mouth and using your teeth because something is wrong with your palms does not need to be normalized.

If people have itchy palms for any reason, I'm not shaming them. I'm pointing out that putting your hands in your mouth is strange.

[–] untorquer@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Meh, like yeah if it's happening a lot and you have a inflammation/rash/broken skin then yeah get that checked.

Don't know a doctor who will give the time of day if i show up saying, "my hand was itchy for two minutes a couple weeks ago and this happens a handful of times a year and it feels good if i use my teeth to dig in"...

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 3 points 3 days ago

But I do a little gnarl and you don't.

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Me scratching the roof of my mouth with my thumb:

[–] Lightfire228@pawb.social 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I usually just grab something metal to scratch with

[–] FireIced@lemmy.super.ynh.fr 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Help me

Every time I see "metal" I think of the parrot that says "metal" or any surface name they touch
