in the initial part of the campaign run, they were planning 600million from the start.

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 151 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

It’s the Koch’s. If you want a somewhat happy ending, David is dead now, at least.

[–] TheFriar@lemm.ee 48 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

The kochs have been the actual boogeymen of American politics for a long time. They’re basically what the right always fear soros is, but for racist, imperialist, corporatist shit. They basically responsible for citizens united.

Jane Mayer's Dark Money should be a compulsory read.

[–] Beldarofremulak@discuss.online 26 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Died a happy wealthy man too

[–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 19 points 15 hours ago

Like fucking Kissinger.

The evil thrive and linger.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 41 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

And it worked.

We don't actually have a democracy, y'all.

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 7 points 15 hours ago (1 children)
[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 9 points 15 hours ago

That's true.

Even the original Constitution only allowed voting for landowning white men, despite the lofty rhetoric. We are not and have never been a democracy.

[–] EtnaAtsume@lemmy.world 12 points 14 hours ago

Somewhat depressingly they bought my alma mater and gutted a lot of its humanities programs...luckily (for me) I was well graduated by then.

[–] baronvonj@lemmy.world 92 points 22 hours ago (4 children)

They put a shit ton of money into state races, too. Their plan was to get enough state legislatures in their pocket to call a constitutional convention and rewrite the US as an anarcho-capitalist state.

[–] FundMECFSResearch@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Lets not give stateless capitalists the label “anarcho” that they try to claim.

Anarchism is the abolishing of systems of domination. You cannot be capitalist and be anarchist. It’s an inherent contradiction. At it’s most basic, anarchism is the abolishment of the state and capitalism. That’s why it’s often called “Libertarian Socialism”.

[–] Doom@ttrpg.network 2 points 5 hours ago

they want slavery that's what they want.

anarchy to them means no legislation to stop what they want, you see the attacks on institutions and regulations all the time. It seems like our representatives hate the FDA and the EPA, wonder why

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 54 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Seems like they found a way to do that without having to do the Constitutional Convention.

[–] scarabic@lemmy.world 14 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

Shyeah. These dudes tried to overthrow democracy by due process? Rubes!

[–] bradorsomething@ttrpg.network 6 points 15 hours ago

I believe that was a stretch goal… the common story has always been that they wanted to take over redistricting after the census, which they really did knock out of the park, catching dems flat-footed.

[–] aviationeast@lemmy.world 26 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

That sounds like treason to me.

[–] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 15 points 19 hours ago

When you're a billionaire they let you do it!

[–] Pistcow@lemm.ee 29 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

I wonder what their security is like?

[–] dwazoup@lemm.ee 82 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

Tight. Very tight. Their bodyguards have special police badges allowing them to carry concealed weapons in all 50 states.

https://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2018-04-11/koch-bodyguards-got-police-badges-from-same-tiny-town-as-mercer

One reporter called Lee Fang once managed to interview one of the brothers.

They tried to ruin his life.

At the congressional swearing in ceremony for the Tea Party wave, I saw David Koch leaving the building and got a short interview. Every other political interview Koch ever gave was carefully screened. This one wasn't.

This interview apparently angered him.

Shortly after they hired private investigators & operatives and I got harassed for over a year. An old high school media account got hacked, they hosted a website calling me a liar, edited my Wiki, a Koch blogger smeared me almost every day.

Yikes. Listening to him talk, and his security guy or whoever that was, leaves a really sickening feeling in my gut. They come across as psychopaths for some reason. It's that cheap charisma that feels so off-putting. I worry what those types of billionaires do in private that will never reach the light of day. Epstien Island type stuff we'll never know about.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 points 9 hours ago

probably is on Epstein list, they cant afford to "watch" ghislaine, otherwise it would be too suspicious

[–] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 32 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

They come across as psychopaths...

Yep. Studies have shown that corporate CEOs have a much higher chance of having psychopathic traits than the general population.

[–] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 21 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

The Koch's are not your average CEO. They are 100% psychopaths. They have been financing libertarian propaganda since the 60's, and are more responsible for both fascism and the MAGA mental illness than Trump, McConnell or any other Republican. If you dig into their history, it's littered with examples of everything from wilfully poisoning the environment, screwing workers they gave cancer, and attempting to overthrow the US gov. I suggest the behind the bastards episode about them.

Their dad was a literal nazi; praised Hitler, Japan, and Italy in the 1930's, and considered New Zealand a socialist hellscape. They were raised by a child abusing Nazi nanny, who was such a Nazi she returned home in 1939 to be a part of Hitlers reich. Everything that came after don't get any better.

[–] mannycalavera@feddit.uk 5 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

The fuck they say about NZ?! Send them here I'll fight them! Cunts.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 2 points 9 hours ago

wierdly a bunch of billionaires a complexes/ and bunkers built in NZ.

[–] robolemmy@lemmy.world 20 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

One of them is dead, so his security is perfect. I’m hoping the other one ups his security game real soon now (due to natural causes, obviously).

[–] mlg@lemmy.world 18 points 20 hours ago

If it makes you happy, the constitution was created to prevent this exact scenario, which is why everything in the US is an oligopoly and not an outright monopoly that can buyout the entire government. Stuff like US Steel, Standard Oil, and the original JP Morgan has never truly been eclipsed in sheer power in the modern US.

Even with collusion, deals still fall through and billionaires fight each other because they all want to be king.

So uh, woopdeedoo I guess

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 5 points 15 hours ago

Read Dark Money. Excellent book.

Koch by name, cock by nature

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 2 points 16 hours ago

I hope that hell exists specifically for people like the Koch brothers.

Funny about dodging paywalls is that nobody condemns using content without paying the creators unless AI does it.

[–] Dragonstaff@leminal.space 2 points 5 hours ago

This point has general merit, but I cannot stress strongly enough Fuck the NYT.
