This has nothing to do with money. This is an attempt to silence outside voices in the US who can be critical of him. It's to control the media.

[–] lolrightythen@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

And to just break shit. Which will ruin industries and create angry poorer people. Stir in some propaganda and boom! You got yourself a Reich.

What even is a tariff on a foreign movie? Licensing to show it doubles?

I'd imagine it'd be both licensing and sales fees would go up if you're licensing or selling it in the States

[–] superkret@feddit.org 19 points 1 day ago

Will the movies be held at the US internet border until the tariff is paid?

[–] Rodneyck@lemm.ee 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Does he sit on the crapper and just spitball the most asinine ideas into reality? How is he going to regulate them outside the US when most of the CGI/animation work and houses are done overseas?

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 2 points 3 hours ago

This idea comes from his official Hollywood advisors, mainly Jon Voight but also Sylvester Stallone and Mel Gibson.

[–] ech@lemm.ee 7 points 1 day ago

He asks, "What is the most batshit thing I could do today to destabilize this country more and rile people up?", then does shit like this about whatever triggers him that day (or whoever he's told to target).

[–] rickyrigatoni@lemm.ee 14 points 1 day ago

hollywood would rather contribute to ruining the american economy instead of just making good movies

[–] endeavor@sopuli.xyz 10 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Hollywood dying wouldn't be all that bad.

[–] KazuyaDarklight@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Given past GOP rhetoric against Hollywood, this seems kind of weird. Double speak is their native tongue though and they'll take any excuse I guess.

[–] piccolo@sh.itjust.works 4 points 21 hours ago

They want their propaganda from hollywood.

Won't this harm foreign films though?

What have you thought about pedos, sex pests and nepo babies?!?

What about the honest regime whores?!

[–] Sciaphobia@lemm.ee 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I am so tired of this dumb asshole and his stupid ass tarrifs. Someone needs to teach this dipshit a new word to obsess over.

Trump first term and theatre industry almost collapse. Trump second term make sure it's dead.

Hollywood is killing it sepf because if greed. If yiu dont pay your staff a decent wage, why do they want to work for you??

And spending hundreds of millions on a single movie is just stupid

[–] piccolo@sh.itjust.works 3 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

More like they are killing themslves by providing nothing of interest and not willing to take risks. Like seriously how many fast and furiouses does the world need?

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 1 points 17 hours ago

When they do take risks, no-one buys tickets.

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 2 points 1 day ago

Hollywood is also running into an issue where streaming has killed the profit model for a lot of movies & TV shows and no one knows what the replacement will look like.

And Hollywood doesn't have a problem getting talent for cheap. That's part of the reason why so many productions are across North America.

Whelp, movies just got added to my boycott of US crap.

No amount of tariffs will make me interested in watching the stuff that American companies have been putting out since 2020. I'm not even looped into the movie industry enough to care which ones were foreign in the first place. Movies are entirely optional and I am totally fine just sitting them out entirely lol.

If anything, this will simply push movie theaters even further from my realm of interest all together.

[–] Jaderick@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sinners was pretty good imo

[–] dontbelasagne@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

One good shit compared to ten different types of diarrhoea

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

More like one bad shit and ten different types of delicious snacks....but you're only looking for something to eat in the toilet.

Just because you get all your media recommendations from ads on social media doesn't mean good films aren't released all the damn time.

[–] dontbelasagne@lemmy.world 1 points 23 hours ago

I have ads blocked everywhere. I'm not denying good films get released. But nowadays all the good films and media come from elsewhere than Hollywood. Sinners is one good shit in the diarrhoea of Hollywood. Most good media now come outside of the hollywood machine. International films are just way more creative right now and don't have any hollywood backing. Until Hollywood cures it's diahrrea I won't be supporting that shit. If you want to keep on reaching in the toilet in the hopes you can find the one clean spot then go ahead, I won't trust a shit that smells bad.

Like exclusively listening to top40 radio and claiming all modern music is shit

[–] ech@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Big "I don't like pop music and only know about 5 artists" vibes.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Media from [era when I was a teenager and had a lot more time to explore different media] is objectively better than the shit they're making today!

[–] FabledAepitaph@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago

I had the same feeling. It was an elitist response that did nothing to educate or inform me or anybody else lol. I don't even care about movies that much, and that guy is expecting me to trudge through the muddy valleys and icy peaks of uptight counter-culture cinema to seek out and pull "good" movies from the depths of the unknown?

That's fine--ill just keep listening to my music and appreciating still art as I've been doing for the last 20+ years of my adult life.

[–] realcaseyrollins@narwhal.city 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This is so dumb. It's not cheaper to film in Canada than Georgia, is it? Many film productions are moving from California, yes...but then going to Georgia or Texas.

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 1 points 17 hours ago

More productions go to Britain which is cheaper.
