Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)

(This list may get expanded when necessary.)

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @federalreverse@feddit.org, @poVoq@slrpnk.net, or @anzo@programming.dev.

Do this enough times and eventually no one will want to do business with the US or it's government.

Who the hell wants to do anything with a leadership that constantly flip flops on everything they say, never means a thing and constantly lies?

[–] gmtom@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

Other than the UK and Israel.

"America has no permanent friends or enemies, only interests."

This is not new. Even England had a shakedown before WW2 support.

[–] howrar@lemmy.ca 14 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Those interests have historically been very stable over time so it was easy to tell if you were going to be a friend or foe. But they suddenly changed with the current administration and we have no idea what they are anymore.

[–] pivot_root@lemmy.world 4 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

we have no idea what they are anymore.

There's no knowing for certain, but "Trump's ego" and "Vladimir Putin" make for relatively good educated guesses.

[–] howrar@lemmy.ca 3 points 17 hours ago

That's the thing. There's a long line of hands taking turns in stroking his ego. Which one was last to do it? How long before the next one and who is it going to be? We don't know any of that.

Literally the goal

[–] regrub@lemmy.world 93 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

For now. The US is proving to be unreliable on the international stage.

[–] VeryVito@lemmy.ml 50 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

On the domestic stage as well.

[–] protist@mander.xyz 13 points 20 hours ago

Can confirm, am American. Whole sectors of our economy depend on grants/government spending and they're very uncertain about their futures

[–] Iamsqueegee@sh.itjust.works 5 points 22 hours ago

Pretty sure the turkeys are still backstage “warming up”.

[–] 1984@lemmy.today 9 points 21 hours ago

Trump and Musk are mentally unstable, thats a fact... So...

[–] Cocopanda@futurology.today 1 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

i’ll keep apologizing for our buffoonery. But don’t write us all off. We will find a way to fix this. Inevitably. Just takes time in democracies.

[–] jenesaisquoi@feddit.org 1 points 54 minutes ago

Ha, that is if you get to keep yours. It's not looking good.

[–] regrub@lemmy.world 17 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

The democracy you speak of is degrading right before our eyes.

[–] Cocopanda@futurology.today 0 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Just like how every democracy has gone through troubling times. You can’t give up hope. It will stand this.

[–] systemglitch@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Revolution when? Pls hurry

[–] Cocopanda@futurology.today 2 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Sadly. Thats never really an option here because of the military state of the police. I wouldn’t feel comfortable telling anyone to go up against the police state. They’ll happily shoot other Americans. They want to.

[–] systemglitch@lemmy.world 3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

You outnumber them. It happens all the time that mobs overrun armed defenders.

[–] Cocopanda@futurology.today 1 points 14 hours ago

I hold a security clearance. So I don’t tend to talk about that stuff publicly. Just peaceful coexistence till next election.

[–] Flaqueman@sh.itjust.works 56 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

If I were Zelinsky, I wouldn't trust that "intelligence"!

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 16 points 21 hours ago

i'd like to think enough anti-putin republicans were ready to turn on krasnov that he flip-flopped.. but ya, this is the more likely scenario: the pentagon is gonna feed some bad intel, and a lot of ukrainians are gonna get killed as a result.

[–] Kyle_The_G@lemmy.world 42 points 22 hours ago

This geriatric asshole is a one trick pony. Slap on tariff, remove the next day. Suspend aid, release the next day. I hope my country completely ditches the US and makes some new friends so we can all just ignore this asshat and get on with our lives.

[–] Potato@feddit.org 17 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

Does he wake up every morning and do a d20 roll on what his opinion is going to be that day?

Seriously though, I guess he REALLY wants his name on the peace deal, whatever the cost, so he can go on to demand a Nobel Peace Prize. I expect him to get real pissy if he doesn't get one, whining about how Obama got one.

[–] djsoren19@lemmy.blahaj.zone 19 points 21 hours ago

No, he does whatever the last person who praised him tells him to do. I remember this from last time, he's really that easily manipulated.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 3 points 20 hours ago

His blood-sugar level apparently has an effect.

[–] Fingolfinz@lemmy.world 17 points 22 hours ago

Yeah, we’re a really reliable source these days

[–] match@pawb.social 11 points 22 hours ago

i guess Mohammed bin Salman called a stockholders meeting
