Honestly it blows my mind they would run windows on a device like this in the first place.
We don't, I already have a steam deck. Touchpads.
The more devices running Linux, the more games and launchers that will support Linux. I wouldn't want to buy a SteamOS ROG Ally, but I definitely want it to exist.
Rising tide lifts all boats, my dude. More people using Linux means Linux gets better.

I pointed out that the OS, trackpads and ergonomics are my main focus. Honestly, more Linux devices would be a win! Even if it ships with Windows but thereβs an easy, official way to get Linux on the thing thatβd be great.
I would rather not waste money on a Windows license I am not going to use.

Agreed 100%, Iβm happy with my 4th quarter 64gb Deck (after the ssd upgrade XD ), however choice and diversity is good. If Windows is considered a selling point, and a Linux version would have to be a separate SKU, reducing availability? Giving the option to buy the single Windows SKU, and maybe downloading an official tool that installs Linux with all the necessary drivers would be better than having to justify a separate, likely less popular SKU. Plus while neither of us is interested in the Ally, other people will have different tastes. Let companies make all shapes and performance/price options for everyone :D
To everybody dismissing this because they already have a steam deck: do you not think more SteamOS devices is a good thing for Linux/Proton gaming? This benefits Steam Deck owners too.
I have a deck and would 100% buy a Deck 2 assuming the price isn't crazy, but I absolutely want more SteamOS offerings from other companies too.
Lacklustre hardware, poor Linux support, and anti-consumer business practices.
These are the things that Asus are all about and itβs why I dismiss their product.
As for the "poor Linux support" - that's exactly what people are talking about reversing. If it officially supported SteamOS and had up-streamed drivers in the kernel, it wouldn't have poor Linux support.
As for the other stuff, sure, perhaps you're right. But nobody is saying you have to buy it. It's still a benefit to you as a SD user to have more people using SteamOS.
Honestly I'd the Asus built an x16 capable open standard connector, and preinstalled a Linux OS on the Ally I would buy it over the Deck.
That I feel would be a truly innovative product that pushes forward the status quo and the least common denominator for the portable market.

Done, thanks. I hit them pretty hard on Linux but moreso on customer/warranty support. They have a longstanding and well-earned reputation for trying to screw their customers after sale.
Charging to unlock the bootloader on the Zenfone 10 after dragging their feet on the promised solution was the last straw for me. I completed the survey putting good customer service level with SteamOS support

Same. I don't see how this could be a bad thing for steam OS and the naysayers are out in force.
There are some in this community who are willing to go into "2008 web forum user in a PlayStation vs Xbox thread" over basically any consumer electronics they buy. Not just in terms of PC handhelds, but stuff like graphics card vendor too. It's wild.
Bought a steam deck? Well then everything else is utter SHIT and those people are MORONS. Anybody that doesn't buy a Steam Deck should be Windows only, even if that disadvantages me too!
We should be welcoming of people running whatever OS they want, and welcoming of manufacturers giving the option of SteamOS. Even more so when it will benefit Linux (and by extension Steam Deck) gamers.
Whats stopping you from slapping a linux distro on any of the other handhelds? Especially with steamos, which is made with that in mind, on the way?
Other than some of them having some really... quirky drivers (which is a big deal), nothing.
But most people don't like installing OSes, and it's still better to have official support than no support, so I think it's still a benefit to the user to have it as an official option, and still benefits us to have a larger SteamOS userbase in general.
Nothing. I did this with two different handhelds. The main problem that I've run into is that the built in controls don't work as well as if they had been natively supported and I would be more than willing to have a fix for that with an official steam OS distro if one was available. The point is, a closed mouth don't get fed. If they don't think people want this they aren't going to dedicate time and resources to it.

I don't really see what it would do that SD doesn't.
The egpu would be compelling if it didn't lock you in to proprietary hardware.
I could ditch my gaming PC if I could dock it and play at 4k.
I love my Steam Deck, but I can barely play most games on low settings and I get like 40-50 FPS with a 90Hz screen.
We need more powerful hardware. I'd prefer that it comes from Valve, but I'll take what I can get, as long as it's optimized for SteamOS/Linux.
I play most games on my streak deck at high settings, not sure I get where you are coming from
