Fucking wow... I had been telling myself that it was probably an out of context still, a photo that was a bad look for sure but it couldn't really be THAT bad.

It really is. It really fucking is that bad. There really is no excusing it, no depth of delusion that can cover it. It really is exactly what we thought it was.

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 1 points 7 hours ago

Same, I thought "Oh he was doing some other gesture and you caught him in mid pose or something..."

But no he straight up did that

[–] GuitarSon2024@lemmy.world 11 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

The gif also cuts off before he does it a second time facing the crowd behind him. Once could maybe be called an accident, but twice? 100% intentional

[–] GeeDubHayduke@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

The mental gymnastics I've seen excusing this in the hour or so since i got online have been... something.

[–] GuitarSon2024@lemmy.world 3 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah I've seen people commenting that he was just trying to wave from his heart but the awkward cut of his suit's armpits made his hand go up like that. You can't make this ish up. It's ludicrous.

[–] GeeDubHayduke@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 18 hours ago

"He didn't grab his heart first, NOT A NAZI SALUTE."

"Hitler family raised his arm to 37.5° to seig heil, Elon raised is to 46.25°, NOT A NAZI SALUTE."

"But Joe Biden was personally flying bombing runs on children's hospitals, so who cares if musk used a fucking NAZI SALUTE?!"

[–] endeavor@sopuli.xyz 11 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

Would be an absolute shame if someone was to, say, make a video edit showcasing his salutes and claiming President Musk should be the one in office.

Would be worse if it would to get a lot of traction. It would be absolutely terrible if during this fragile time, some video like this would cause friction between some stupid manchild and a demented idiot. It would pain my heart heavily if such a video would help convince non extremist voters that Musk and the new powers that be are of a certain affiliation.

I don't understand these people at all. If I had 10 million dollars I'd be living the high life in a tropical country banging hookers left and right. Why is someone worth 600 billion so interested in something so boring and shitty as politics? Does he have no actual interests?

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 2 points 7 hours ago

I would be trying to invent a super soldier serum that turns you into catgirl if I had 600 billion dollars

[–] casmael@lemm.ee 1 points 9 hours ago

Good point I don’t think he has any interests at all what an enormous red flag

[–] jagungal@lemmy.world 20 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

That's the thing: if you or I got 10mil we'd live it up and not worry about accumulating more wealth. Beyond that it's just collecting for collecting's sake. Clearly, when you're the richest man on earth, the only way to collect more (of anything) is to collect power by buying the president.

Nah, I'd contintue accumulsting wealth and use that money to fight climate change, fund anti-big-oil propaganda, I'm gonna steer humanity to a brigher future. Fund progressive politicians, get a progressive elected POTUS. Get socialist policies implemented (yes it will impact my wealth too, but fuck it lol, YOLO). Try to influence other countries too. And I'm gonna get a big statue of me in front of the UN building. I'll be remembered as the one who save the world from climate change. My name will be remembered longer than anyone else in history. 😎

People like him are not really interested in money. They’re interested in recognition, validation, and power.

They could save us from climate change and be remembered forever as heroes of humanity. But instead, they go on a path of destruction. 🙄

Got a good laugh. Banging hookers sounds like a hell of a dream.

[–] GuitarSon2024@lemmy.world 6 points 18 hours ago

Don't let your dreams be dreams, come on down to Amsterdam

[–] eagleeyedtiger@lemmy.nz 216 points 1 day ago (9 children)

Literally the richest man in the world, who's now got the President of one of the richest countries in the world with the strongest military, in his pocket. Doing a Nazi salute twice on a national stage with very likely no repercussions whatsoever. Not to mention all the other billionaires at the inauguration. This is truly a cursed timeline.

That Doomsday clock must be very close to midnight by now

[–] Carighan@lemmy.world 9 points 19 hours ago

What's worse, this happens at a time when there are already certain issues genuinely bigger than humans as a species (in some regards), like climate change, that ought to supercede all other issues and really need everyone to pool all of their resources and be smart about it.

Instead we get Chucklefuck McDoofusface doing a Sieg Heil as he accepts his de-factor presidency of the Unites States of Assholery.

[–] kromem@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago

In Greek theater, when the events on stage looked like they were headed for certain tragedy, there was a trope that could salvage the situation and turn it on its head.

The deus ex machina.

The Doomsday clock is definitely ticking down, but there's also some curious things taking place beyond the edge of where most people have been following in that vein.

We live in interesting times, but the variables at hand are different from the history that seems to be repeating in very important ways.

It's an arrestable offence in Australia.

[–] hOrni@lemmy.world 73 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Rich people don't get arrested.

In most countries, the KKK would be considered a terrorist organization. Here in the US, they're a "political group."

The call has been coming from inside the house for over a century.

Yet Luigi is a terrorist

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 5 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

The US has considered them a terrorist organization since 1870

Weird how the ADL is nowhere to be found when someone does a Nazi salute on a national stage. I guess it's more necessary to dunk on anti-genocide Jews instead.

[–] halykthered@lemmy.ml 194 points 1 day ago (7 children)
[–] Carighan@lemmy.world 11 points 19 hours ago

Not a Nazi salute

Oh fuck OFF!

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 159 points 1 day ago (3 children)
[–] kromem@lemmy.world 11 points 20 hours ago

Just plain gross.

I knew a number of camp survivors, and I'm just glad they aren't still around to see the voices that were so loudly calling to "never forget" having turned into "I'll ignore your Nazi salute if you ignore my war crimes."

[–] Bakkoda@sh.itjust.works 115 points 1 day ago

"The Party told you to reject evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final and most essential command."

  • Probably Orwell or something
[–] renzev@lemmy.world 54 points 1 day ago (3 children)

This is exactly how modern fascists operate. The majority of people will brush it off with "It's just a joke" or "It was an accident", but the extremists in the crowd know that it wasn't, and they feel right at home. There was a video on youtube called something like "the pewdiepipeline" that explained this perfectly.

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 6 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

When I saw the headline I expected an awkward wave or something, caught in camera at the exact wrong moment, being pushed because it made a good headline. I didn't think there was any way musk would be so blatant. Then I watched the video and no, that's a legitimate seig heil right there, the press reported exactly what happened.

this is appeasement, you shitfuckers at ADL...

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 33 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Jesus Christ. Mask off... Maybe if we had a halfway decent education system, people would see this for the bullshit it is

It's worse than that, they said it wasn't a nazi salute. :/

[–] Furbag@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago

Remember, it's only a Nazi Salute if it occurs in the Weimar region of Germany between 1938-1945. Otherwise it's just Sparkling Fascism.

This dork wants to be darth vader, and it kills him that it isn't working. Instead of becoming a cooler person and being good to people, which might make him cool, he does what weak people do and does increasingly horrible things.

It's like he thinks "if you can't be strong, be weak, louder". He needs to go the other way.

[–] Kyrgizion@lemmy.world 112 points 1 day ago (3 children)

My theory: a test to see how easily their media apparatus can explain this away or ignore it entirely. Effectively shaping reality in realtime.

I think they're going to pull a strategy of just doing everything so fast that people won't have time to react properly to anything before the next, worse things comes along. Trump virtually admitting that Musk interfered with voting machines yesterday, Nazi Salute today, 200+ executive orders dropping tomorrow. Sort of like a Gish gallop of Nazism.

I'm calling it. In 2 months he will be proudly wearing a toothbrush mustache. And the headlines will say "Musk is brining back Charlie Chaplin's mustache".
