Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

"Woke" (lemmy.world)
submitted 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) by Stamets@lemmy.world to c/tenforward@lemmy.world

So I've been barely active on Lemmy for a litany of reasons but I am active elsewhere. Specifically, Bluesky. I run an account that I've posted here a couple times called the Starfleet Press Office where I post lil tweets that take place kinda within the Star Trek universe, breaking the fourth wall to an extent. The idea is that the Department of Temporal Investigations owed a favor to the team in charge of the S.P.O so he got a temporal link to Bsky set up. For fun. So random tweets get posted that are commenting on current episodes (A few were made for different Lower Decks episodes as they were posted), other ones about just random events in the universe that I think would be funny (sometimes lining up with holidays, like some Santa teleportation nonsense), and others that take real world events and parody them in the Star Trek universe, like the ferengi CEO of a health insurance conglomerate getting killed.

I'm clearly doing something right because @RealGulDukat, the guy who posts Trump tweets as if Dukat said them, follows only 13 people on Bsky and one of them is me. So whatever nonsense I keep posting I'm just gonna stick with. Drop by and say hi!

Why am I blanking on "Communist Himbo"? Is that supposed to be Rom?

[–] Stamets@lemmy.world 42 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Yeah, that's my guess. He did quote the Communist Manifesto

[–] Norin@lemmy.world 47 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Formed a union, charmed one of the most beautiful women in the quadrant, saved that quadrant with a mix of intelligence and courage, raised his son to be a war hero, and eventually became the Grand Nagus.

We Stan Rom in this house.

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I’ve only seen the first season so far (my borg-loving husband won rock paper scissors, and we’re finishing voyager first), but that’s wild. I’m very excited for Rom’s character development.

While leading a labor strike and rejecting his employer's bid to undermine the union with a literal back room deal.

[–] Lemjukes@lemm.ee 9 points 2 weeks ago

It’s %100 rom and it’s a perfect description of him

[–] grue@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

What threw me off was "main characters." If I thought recurring characters were included I would've gotten it in one.

[–] SatyrSack@feddit.org 6 points 2 weeks ago

That is always the consensus whenever this is reposted, but I would argue that description doesn't really fit. Rom is too clever and not hypermasculine enough

https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Himbo

[–] nightwatch_admin@feddit.nl 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Are you honestly suggesting Rom is not a himbo? He is smart but.. come on now.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

He's a mechanical genius. He could have been the chief engineer of a starship.

Kirk and Uhura kiss, 1968

Woke, you say? Dare I remind people what racial tensions were like when this episode came out in (checks notes) 1968?

Now? It’s amazing how people either didn’t know or willingly ignored TOS. Think about the episode with the half and half people, or the first time there was an interracial kiss. Star Trek has been “woke” since the 60s.

[–] Stamets@lemmy.world 31 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Slight correction but TOS didn't have the first interracial kiss. A very, very early one, but not the first.

Not that it makes the kiss mean any less, just a clarification for future reference. So many people are assholes and I've seen them use that oft made mistake to try and discredit everything else someone says.

[–] Honytawk@lemmy.zip 18 points 2 weeks ago

It is like the second one showing on national tv in the US.

Still pretty woke though.

[–] ramble81@lemm.ee 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Huh, didn’t know that. I thought it was the first aired during prime time. So who does that award go to?

[–] littletoolshed@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] vaguerant@fedia.io 16 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

So it's awkward to make the distinction ("I think not being racist is the new racism"), but based on that article, it does seem to be the first romantic kiss--I know it's mind control in the episode, stop picking at me mid-sentence--on US television between black and white people specifically. The previous examples were arguably less taboo for their time, being between Hispanic and white and Asian and white partners. They each represent their own milestones.

I think part of the confusion probably comes from the fact that "interracial" is sometimes used specifically to refer to black and white pairings, so when people say it's the "first interracial kiss", that is what they mean. This is an incorrect usage and dismissive of other interracial pairings, but I don't know if there's a more specific word for different pairings and you sound like a creep drilling down into the subject this much, as you can see from this comment right now.

[–] dharmacurious@slrpnk.net 13 points 2 weeks ago

Trying to discuss race as category at all almost always ends with either feeling creepy or really leaning into it in a creepy way. It's about as scientific as discussing skull shape or star signs, it's just so institutionalized that it feels real... Until you poke at it, and realize I love Lucy was both interracial and not, because Reasons™

Woke is the new sheeple. In that...anyone who says is unironically is you know they're an absolute moron parroting the latest talking points they were told to be outraged at.

[–] superkret@feddit.org 48 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Every societal change that's happened before I was born was just the natural way of things and needs to be preserved.
Every societal change that's happened after I was born is the evil work of the woke devil worshippers destroying society.

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

If you go back a little in time me you can talk about how rock music and the shaking of hips would destroy society. A little further and it was the first kiss on screen.

This is true of every generation it seems. Here is a supposed quote from King Naram Sin of Chaldea, 3800 years B.C

"We have fallen upon evil times and the world has waxed very old and wicked. Politics are very corrupt. Children are no longer respectful to their parents."

I wish anybody would make something as woke as DS9 again

[–] MajorHavoc@programming.dev 6 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah!

Weirdly, The Orville is the recently created media that stands closest, in my opinion.

I think it's a far cry from DS9.

And I'm pretty sure I don't share many politics with Seth MacFarlane.

But The Orville genuinely prioritizes asking the audience to reflect on tough topics through a lens of empathy and compromise.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 21 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Who is communist himbo?

I feel like I've asked that before and have already forgot... 🤔

[–] altasshet@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

It's clearly Rom.

Edit: I have no original thoughts...

[–] elephantium@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

Rom, apparently. I had to do some searching to figure it out.

I enjoyed star trek before it got woke. I still enjoy ~~TNG~~ ~~TOS~~ ~~The Cage~~ The intro. There's nothing woke about "space"

[–] grue@lemmy.world 19 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Honestly, exploring for exploration's sake (as opposed to conquest or resource extraction) is pretty woke too.

[–] lugal@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 2 weeks ago

True, but "the final frontier" sounds alot like Manifest Destiny and makes the US look like the humanistic project the federation is. I think star trek plays both teams and actually always wins. It appeals to those who like hierarchical militaristic power structures while giving a utopian one to those unsatisfied with the real ones. Don't get me wrong, I read it as a left utopia but I have my issues and see how people from other points of the spectrum enjoy it too.

[–] jaemo@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Except for the one inconvenient point that the entire series is predicted on THE ENTIRE SPECIES GOING WOKE AND NOT BICKERING OVER IT.

Do we seriously think us ugly bags of mostly water could get safely out to the hard vacuum of space without a lengthy bout of cooperation and super-getting-along powers?

I suspect we are actually upset about is the in-your-face woke tropes that are used as 2x4s with nails driven through them as devices to drive the narrative. But that's not just trek, that's kinda all modern media. It's almost like the corresponding rise in incivility and everyday life is being protested, or warned against by the people doing the writing. I agree that it's poorly executed but bad writing doesn't mean that "being good and kind to one another" is a shitty idea, or that it's impossible have characters acting with an enlightened humanity, which is all being "woke" actually is.

Sisko was obviously space Moses, not space Jesus.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I always like to remind people that Star Trek includes the first ever ~~interracial~~ kiss between a black and white person on TV.

It's always been "woke."

(Edited. See Wikipedia article.)

The only people who say this shit are people who saw a thirty-second segment on Fox News. Star Trek and Star Wars have been woke for as long as they've existed, and that's partly why they're so fantastic.

[–] Shawdow194@fedia.io 9 points 2 weeks ago

Thank you for everything Stamets

[–] eugenevdebs@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Every time I see this, I'm reminded of the weird right wing star trek subreddit called r/star_trek where people disagreed with this. It was wild that they "watched" the same shows where it literally has every single of these characters and went "nah I disagree"
