What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.

Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post as opposed to arguing.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

They hate it when it's pointed out that they're useful idiots for fascists. Even if it's phrased politely. Any excuse to avoid confronting that.

[–] spacecadet@lemm.ee 31 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

They believe if they don’t vote that the democrats will magically transform all of their policies to communist ideology to capture and extra 0.3% of voters at the expense of losing most of their voter base.

It’s funny because the users advocating for communism would be the first useless morons to wind up in work camps.

It's because it's a deeply religious position for tankies. They aren't interested in political strategy or, despite their claims, material conditions of society. They have utter disdain for 'shitlibs' like socdems and demsocs - the disdain they have for the vast majority of the population, who is even less on their side, is far greater. They have no desire to try and change opinions on the ground. Why would they want to stoop down to the level of ~~sinners~~ reactionaries? No, all they want is for the poors to suffer and the minorities to be exterminated in the hopes that their ~~rapture~~ sorry, proletarian revolution, will trigger because of ~~the end days~~ accelerationism.

Idunno. Most tankies are actually rich people, usually college-fund kids or nepo-baby manchildren. Rarely have I ever seen them actually complain about jobs that the poor do.

[–] bi_tux@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago

that or they're neets

I'd be interested in some survey data. Someone should do a survey on hexbear.

members of the venguard party don't usually end up in work camps tho, also those work camps are just educational instututions to denazify the population!!!11!11!

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 weeks ago

They were fascists so we layed them to rest.

"The Revolution, like Saturn, devours her children."

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 36 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

It's really fascinating to see how all extremists end up voting together despite apparently opposing each other.

Of course they don't actually oppose each other. All repeat the same values.

[–] bi_tux@lemmy.world 24 points 2 weeks ago

no, all authoritarians have the same values

[–] zyratoxx@lemm.ee 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Imagine you are on a demo and see the Russian Tsardom, Russian Federation and USSR flag flown right next to each other.

If you think you're making up something now, you will be surprised. This is actually a thing, as there are "Stalin good, Purin good, Nikolai 2 good" people - they dig for historical confirmations of authoritarian rule being effective, and promote it: "let's get ourself a tzar, he'll take care of everything!"

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 weeks ago

The unspoken assumption is that change is impossible. Like the universe itself dictates a steep gradient, and the only way things could be different is by shuffling around who goes where. So if someone is suffering, they must have fucked up to deserve it, and if you want to help them, you're putting someone else in their place. This worldview, rooted in interpersonal loyalty, always amounts to "well somebody's gotta be king." Might as well be your team.

The ends of the horseshoe.

They really don’t like people to disagree with the hive over there, do they?

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (3 children)

They certainly don't.

I love it though since there's always raving about 'oh i just dunked some LIBTARD the other day, i'm so cool, please be friends with me' ... But they never actually did it. Pretending to have internet arguments is one of the strangest things I've seen from tankies, next to the deviantart stalin and communist anime waifus... certainly, uh, curious? I don't post them here since it feels like picking on disabled folk--scatch that--IT IS picking on the disabled.

[–] Soup@lemmy.cafe 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh good lord, they actually do that? The moment I think they can’t get worse….

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, it's very prevalent all over their elements and discords. They meme a lot on the surface, but inside their actual circles, when they know it's just themselves, it's an immensely depressing place--A common trait in all extremist communities, really. Anger on the outside. Crying on the inside.

I actually think a lot about those guys who post their fanarts because I just can't fathom how utterly depressing that life must be for them. But it's also their passion and probably therapy for them, minus the whole praising long-dead dictators thing, perhaps it'll help them. Suppose that's why so many authoritarian states immediately strangle art since it pacifies the extreme.

[–] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 weeks ago

Idk. Maybe pretending to have Internet arguments is better than actually having them.

At least then their idiocy is limited to inside their head then spread across the Internet.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

I should do that honestly. Just announce that I'm right and then stop responding to a comment thread

[–] YeetPics@mander.xyz 18 points 2 weeks ago

I really don't get...

Fascists.

Fascists are why you were banned.

[–] TheSlad@sh.itjust.works 17 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

They do want trump to win because they want the downfall of america.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

That's probably there logic

However, it is important to note that America is not going to "fall" because of one president. That kind of thinking leads to aggressive action and is what lit the fire that was Jan 6, 2020. Civil non violent action is what is needed.

Exactly. Trump is bad, but he's not Hitler. If I felt he was, I might sympathize with those who made attempts on his life. I don't think he is, so I'm firmly on the side of "the Secret Service did a terrible job."

That said, I tend to vote third party, but I ended up voting for Biden in 2020 despite really not liking him because Trump was that bad. And I did this despite living in a very red state, because I thought people here hated Trump enough to protest-vote for Biden (he got dead last here in 2016 primaries, losing to people who had already dropped out...).

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I see the "let's not arrest black people" logic outside of just political extremists. Such it is bad when the police are racial profiling people but on the other side of the coin I've seen people ignoring when Black or other minorities are committing a crime.

Basically the TLDR is that people should be treated equal and race shouldn't affect the justice system. (It is hard to do in practice)

It is hard to do in practice

Well, firing the bad cops is a good start. Let's end qualified immunity and see how the legal system works things out.
