TIL not only was this for preventing the box from bending inward, which everyone knows, but also allows you to grab a slice without touching the other pizza slices! Mind blown.

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

you and me, we are in the same boat. When I saw these as a kid, I always thought they were to prevent slices from separating and till now had forgotten about them

My brother and I would have thrown hands over who got the dough ball every time

[–] tal@lemmy.today 17 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Interesting. I've never seen those.

[–] HeyJoe@lemmy.world 10 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Neither have I, but this makes way more sense than the plastic thing. I would imagine costs less as well?

[–] Alenalda@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

More food, and less plastic waste? I'm all for it. You can even get all gimmicky and fill it with cheese/toppings.

why are these still legal while plastic straws and forks &c are banned?

[–] clarinet_estimator@lemm.ee 10 points 6 days ago

One of my local shops uses a garlic knot instead of these. I don't know why more places don't do that. Delicious and functional!

[–] tal@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm reading this while sipping a drink through a plastic straw.

My local pizzarias also use that support.

looking at your post history gives me the impression that you're in europe

The EU is acting against plastic pollution. From 3 July 2021, single-use plastic plates, cutlery, straws, balloon sticks and cotton buds cannot be placed on the markets of the EU Member States. In addition, the same measure applies to cups, food and beverage containers made of expanded polystyrene, and all products made of oxo-degradable plastic.

i haven't seen plastic straws for some years now. Where are you?

Naw, the US. I'm just trying to post more articles on Europe; I used to follow /r/Europe on Reddit. Got into it back in when Trump was in office because I was profoundly tired of reading about Trump, and he was constantly all over all American news.

Also read something about European politics and international issues and such during that time, so I sometimes comment on them talking about those.

EDIT: If you'll go back a couple more comments in my comment history, you'll find me talking about the Declaration of Independence, if you want something more American:

and I've been following U.S. politics from afar for the last almost 10 years. It's a crazy ride you're on. It's fascinating… it's really fascinating to watch how half of the richest country in the world can fall for a conman 👀

i guess people don't care about regulating single use plastics when the discussion is about doctors killing babies after birth and migrants eating pets, sharks vs electrocution, windmills killing birds, toilet flushes getting weak, pussy grabbing &c

[–] Geometrinen_Gepardi@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 week ago (5 children)

This is such a quintessentially American thing, I've never seen one in real life. Are pizza boxes in the states especially thin so that these are necessary?

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

When pizza boxes are over 50cm across, they probably start to sag a bit.

[–] Cort@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

I think the concern is more about stacking multiple boxes and the combined weight of everything pushing down on the bottom box. 2-3 pizzas is probably fine without, but when you get a large order for a party or school or event with 5 stacks of ten pizzas each the weight becomes a problem.

I've had them this side of the pond too. You'd think they'd be banned by single-use plastic rules by now, but they aren't.

[–] zzx@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago (3 children)

You guys actually have like, a nationally enforced law against single use plastics? Forgive my American ignorance. I'm honestly so jealous of you guys

[–] merde@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 days ago

Leaflet summarising the EU rules which target the vast amount of single-use plastic and fishing gear containing plastic. Banner depicting seahorse, straw, knife, fork, and sphere motifs against dark blue backdrop.

Turning the tide on single-use plastics

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

It's starting but there's so much plastic everywhere that there's still a lot to do.

[–] Swarfega@lemm.ee 1 points 6 days ago

Shopping bags used to be free but they started charging for them and slowly people adapted to buying more robust reusable bags. Great to no longer see bags flying about in the streets.

Plastic straws are gone. Plastic cutlery is gone. Both are made from paper in McDonald's.

There's been good movement to reduce plastics. That said there is still a tonne used. My recycling bag at home has so much plastic in it. There really needs more to be done.

[–] Lanusensei87@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

We here in South America use them a lot.

[–] _g_be@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

It's probably more relevant as the boxes get wider but not thicker or taller. It is American to have huge portions, after all

There's a pizzeria in my city that always puts these upside-down 😡
