Subsidies for me, but not for thee

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 23 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Corporate welfare. The ruling class LOVE socialism when it means tax payers fund their businesses.

[–] JustZ@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

Privatize the profit, socialize the loss.

That’s what he’s against

The current subsidies need to be made in NAFTA countries and he wants to outsource production

[–] jprice@kbin.run 52 points 2 months ago

Let’s just do ourselves a favor and support the SEC law suits against Musk. Then let’s investigate how he actually runs his companies and throw him in prison or sue him into the poor house. Shit bags like that weirdo need to get slapped down to nothingness. And it’s our job to support the government agencies that can do that. Stop his degenerate sideways talk.

Would it be fun if Harris won and gave subsidies to every other EV company but Tesla?

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 40 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That's actually a policy that existed long before Harris was Vice President.

To incentivize manufacturers to build EV's, the first 200,000 get a tax credit. Tesla reached its limit first so now wants to stop the incentives for all other manufacturers.

To make it fair, if the tax credit is removed Tesla should be required to pay back the ~ $1.5 Billion in tax credits they received.

[–] vanontom@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Also, incentives for union-made American products. Whoops, Elen and Tesla is anti-union. Seems to be the root of his hate for Biden.

[–] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

They tried to do this with the IRA by requiring it to be a union workforce. Before the bill was finished that got reduced to an additional bonus for union labor shops, and then that got completely removed in I believe it was the senate?

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

The Inflation Reduction Act?

Irish Republican Army?

Individual Retirement Account?

Edit: Assume you mean the first one, just nkt sure what the "it" you mean is. Tesla? They wanted to require Tesla go fully union...?

[–] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Inflation reduction act.

Early on there was talks that the act was going to require OEMs to be union shops to get the benefits.

Then the bill was released and it was something like $4500 for everyone and and additional $3000 if your factory had union labor.

Then when it got to the senate or house, the union portion got removed and it was $7500 for everyone.

This fucking guy seems to think Trump and Polievre will hand him a NA market not only subsidized but incentivized by tariffs on imports from China - who, unlike NA, hasn’t stuck their head in the oilsand.

And he’s right it seems.

North America fucked up EVs. It’s fucked that we will also be hampered in adoption because of shit selection and absurd prices.

Edit: another hindrance to adoption is that I will never give my money to Tesla after how Musk is acting with their approval.

Not enough towns that could benefit from bus systems have bus systems. We could be providing subsidies to municipalities to implement bus systems. Instead we're giving them to the world's richest man so we can shift which resources our colonialism extracts instead of undoing the colonialism

Me too, but I’m resigned to it.

Too many Canadians simply cannot see that our conservatives are similar in ideology to the US.

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

I will hold out a tiny sliver of hope that he won't be elected. However, my realist-ness says we have 8 years of pp to fuck up canada before we get another liberal PM. Not what need either, but at least less detrimental.

Musk - the biggest welfare queen of all time

[–] YeetPics@mander.xyz 5 points 2 months ago

Elon musk is a filthy ℬℯℊℊ𝒶𝓇 who needs handouts.

[–] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

He's talked about this before, and he wants all subsidies stopped, not just EV subsidies.

Although if only the IRA EV subsidies are removed, he seems to think it'd benefit Tesla more since the other OEMs need it vs them not needing it, and supporting one without the other would be hypocritical.

But if we got rid of the IRA subsidies AND all the 646 billion the US provides yearly to oil/gas (it's apparently 5.4 trillion globally per year) that EVs would become the natural choice as an ICE vehicles true cost is shown.

Edit: a little clarity. Also, it might transition people that can into heat pumps substantially faster further reducing oil/gas needs.

[–] ByteOnBikes@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 months ago

Of course they do.

What a major company says publicly vs what they actually do are two different things.

[–] EatATaco@lemm.ee -3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

This is a hard thing for me to paint as hypocritical.

To explain, you're playing the game with the rules as they are, not as you want or think they should be, and it's stupid to put yourself at a disadvantage because you think the rules should be different; it's entirely possible to use the rules to your advantage but also think the rules should be changed.

[–] Badeendje@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

This is pulling up the ladder behind you.
