I know the points are there and are saved, but why are they not visible on our profile, as a shit poster these points are my applause, my credit, my holy absolutely useless internet points, I love them. So have they be abandoned in the first place?

Welcome to Lemmy where the points are made up and scores don't matter!

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 38 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

That is exactly why. Post something you think people will enjoy, or appreciate, not something to make your numbers go up so you feel less meaningless.

Edit: also, please don't take this as an attack, you are not meaningless. But maybe reflect on what you're getting out of bigger number and see if you can get some of that satisfaction elsewhere? A creative outlet aside from shitposting can only help. Find something you enjoy purely for the sake of it and for the personal satisfaction it provides.

Edit 2: Incase anyone missed it: here's the devs' offical take

[–] solrize@lemmy.world 37 points 1 month ago

Good riddance to that gamification.

[–] Bahnd@lemmy.world 19 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Its healthier not to have them. Also there is a technical limitation in that points are logged by the instance you post on, your profile could keep a rough tally, but thats yet another cross instance data stream that would need to be synced. Seeing how most lemmy instances are pretty small or managed by hobbiests, thats fine, less for them to worry about.

Also if you post because you have something to say over wanting internet points, people will read your words differently.

Not having karma is one of Lemmy's biggest selling points for me lol

[–] Boozilla@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Karma sucks. It encourages groupthink.

[–] Death_Equity@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Karma leads to reposting. Being active in a group encourages groupthink. Isolation leads to echo chambers. Knowing things leads to oversimplified false equivalencies.

Don't forget literal karma farms, clickbait, purchasing accounts, and propaganda.

I lived karma at first when it was just a bunch of humans, but it was ruined by groups wanting to get ahead. So unfortunately it's better it's gone here.

The points are still in the Lemmy database of your instance. Some software will exposure it for you

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I thought that was patched out?

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The API making it available to standard clients was deactivated, but the data is still in the database, its how voting works.

Other interfaces like mbin will still show it as reputation or sentiment.

[–] aodhsishaj@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's a little bit fuzzed because they can only accurately track your instance. But yeah, if there were no db there would be no tally.

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The votes you see are on your instance, every up and down vote is a federated activity and recorded in each instances database (that are subscribed to the community)

[–] aodhsishaj@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think that's what I said, so I have to ask where I'm misunderstanding this. Can you point me to a github or some documentation so that I can better understand?

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Maybe this is a case of just agreeing with each other. I just wanted to clarify that all votes are individually federated and not some aggregate vote total between instances.

[–] aodhsishaj@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Ah ok I misunderstood then. Yes that's how I understand it as well. I'm always open to learning more about it though. It's still young tech and can move fast.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I guess that's unavoidable but still a little disappointing. At least it's fairly obscured and therefore less likely someone will accuse me of farming points when in reality I'm just online too much and want to see Lemmy flourish.

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 2 points 1 month ago

me too buddy, me too

[–] aodhsishaj@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I think we're approaching the beginning of eternal summer. Been noticing a lot of people that're coming in from Reddit and bringing the shitty parts of that culture with them while staying blissfully unaware of how things are setup here, or unwilling to ask questions to find out.

Lots of people calling it a site, no understanding of federation.

Which is fine. Not everyone needs to know the technical minutae to benefit or build communities. However it's become to me a little warning sign that the person I'm talking to might not be discussing in honest good faith.

[–] EherVielleicht@feddit.org 1 points 1 month ago (2 children)

We had points here in the beginning.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)
[–] IMALlama@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

This should be a top level reply IMO. It's the perfect answer.

[–] aodhsishaj@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I don't believe they were federated outside of your specific instance though I could be wrong. Also I seem to recall a community effort to have them removed.

[–] EherVielleicht@feddit.org 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They are still there I can see them through mbin

[–] aodhsishaj@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

So then you might be better served joining the mbin instance and migrating your account there as it seems their implementation aligns more with your usecase.

[–] EherVielleicht@feddit.org 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I am fine with some of the arguments, I still think the points are our applause, and we should be able to see them..... Always pros and cons, life is a beach...

[–] aodhsishaj@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] marcos@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

The real points were people improving your jokes and reacting to your comments in the way.

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Write a script that tallies your comments' points and updates your profile. Hope this helps!

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

And hopefully have an epiphany in the process.

[–] HubertManne@moist.catsweat.com 1 points 1 month ago

Mine still show. Premium as well as regular. I don't think they show though till you get one.
