Because it's a hateful slur unless you're talking about a bundle of sticks.

[–] aidan@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

It's in a meme. Reading it doesn't harm you. Anymore than reading the other stuff in the meme does, or even just knowing it's written

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Censoring it doesn't harm you, either. It's a word that's only purpose is to spread hate. Nothing of value is lost.

[–] aidan@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It does, because I call my bf a removed teasingly. And a lot of my gay friends do the same.

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You're welcome to say whatever you want to your family and friends. This is a public forum.

So.. you have been asked to not spread hate, and you ask why?

[–] aidan@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

A word is not hate.

[–] Shardikprime@lemmy.world -3 points 1 year ago

We respect Christ in here

I think you meant "fags". Not quite the same word.

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Derived from the same word, but an abbreviation of it.

removed is the word that people are getting sensored for I honestly didn't even know that was a slur I just thought it was just a insult like fucker or bitch classy no but you haven't noticed people tend to insult and get into fights with people like you know someone is sheltered if they are surprised that people fight online

[–] UnculturedSwine@lemmy.world -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You obviously haven't had it used against you as a call to violence have you?

[–] kleenbhole@lemy.lol 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

No, I got called other words. Not banning them either. The R word is our word.

[–] UnculturedSwine@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I would rather people don't use it at all if you don't mind and I gladly censor myself when it comes to other slurs. I can't convey the mental anguish and self hatred that I've suffered all because of an immutable characteristic of my sexuality. You can treat it lightly because you haven't gone through that suffering. It's one thing for someone to make fun of you for kicks. It's quite another for entire groups of people to hate you because of what you are.

[–] Isoprenoid@programming.dev 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Because it breaks Rule 1

Refrain from using harmful language pertaining to a protected characteristic: e.g. race, gender, sexuality, disability or religion.

[–] ArmokGoB@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

OP isn't using it. He's quoting someone else using it.

[–] Isoprenoid@programming.dev -5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Then it breaks Rule 5:

No content that harasses members within or outside of the community.

[–] ADTJ@feddit.uk 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's ridiculous, quoting harassment is in no way itself harassment. That would undo just about every awareness campaign ever.

[–] Isoprenoid@programming.dev -4 points 1 year ago

Depends on the reason for the quote. Awareness campaigns quote them as examples of what not to do. There is a clear intention to tell the audience "Watch out for this, avoid it, this is wrong."

The punchline in this example is an encouragement to harass people because it's funny.
