What is the right attitude to have with drivers or cars on the road as someone who bikes, or walks, or uses another mode of transportation.

I'm looking to adjust my behaviour and want some opinions. How do you treat cars on the road (shared bike/car roads, bike lanes only)

I think there is a good case for adding 'friction' to the lives of drivers. But I'm less sure today. I'm conflicted. Friction comes in a variety of ways, but basically I think of it as me not contributing to the driving experience in a positive way. Eg. if you're a car rushing up to a stop sign with a light on a bike path... we'll I'm not pushing the pedestrian button. I can wait. Good luck turning left on this 4 lane road during rush hour :) I'm not like this if I'm a pedestrian.

Do communities like fuckcars encourage people to adopt a more extreme response to cars? Is the internet radicalizing me? Is it worth it?

The majority of the time biking is great and I'm happy to not be driving around, but sometimes I'm done with cars being cars: dangerous, entitled, and they stink and I lose my patience. Car blocking the entire road? I'm saying something. Car tail gating me? I'm moving to the center of the road until it's safe to pass.

I'm in a Canadian city. I've never had any incidents with cars and I've been commuting on my bike in bike lanes/roads for like 8 years.

Absolute tragedy. It's sad that these unsafe passes and aggressive driving are common and normalized among sober drivers. Every 10mph increased speed driven doubles pedestrian mortality rates. source. Unsafe driving kills

The menstrual product ad trope of a jubilant woman going rock climbing or bungee jumping or doing athletic feats is associated with the 1980s, but it's in fact way older than that. This menstrual product ad from the late 19th century shows a very jubilant woman going cycling.

The pads in the advert, which apparently help you cycle around dressed like a triumphant Roman, include "pasteurised peat". Peat moss, also known as sphagnum, was a popular choice for homemade menstrual pads as the moss can absorb up to 20 times its weight in moisture.

Abstract

Increasing the uptake of active, carbon neutral forms of transport is indicated for both population health and environmental conservation. Efforts to increase cycling uptake are hindered by negative attitudes towards cyclists. Recent research from Australia has found that many people consider cyclists to be less than fully human. There is currently a lack of empirical evidence that explains these dehumanising perceptions. Most people who ride bicycles in Australia wear safety helmets as required by mandatory helmet laws. We hypothesised that people wearing bicycle helmets are perceived as less human compared to people without helmets due to reduced visibility of eyes and hair. We tested this hypothesis through a survey (n = 563) comprised of two-paired alternate forced choice questions to identify which image of a cyclist respondents consider to be less human. We then analysed the results using a Bradley-Terry probability model. We found images of cyclists wearing helmets or safety vests to have a higher probability of being selected as less human compared to images of cyclists wearing no safety equipment. The results have implications for research on cyclist dehumanisation and its mitigation.

California socialite Rebecca Grossman sentenced to 15 to life for killing 2 kids in crosswalk

A wealthy California woman who co-founded a burn center foundation in the Los Angeles area was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison Monday for the hit-and-run killings of two children while they were in a crosswalk more than three years ago.

Rebecca Grossman was speeding when she struck and killed Mark Iskander, 11, and his brother Jacob, 8, while they were in a crosswalk in the Los Angeles-area city of Westlake Village on Sept. 29, 2020.

“The loss of these two innocent lives has devastated their family and our community. Ms. Grossman’s blatant disregard for human life is a stark reminder of the grave consequences of irresponsible behavior behind the wheel,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement.

A jury convicted Grossman in February on two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and one count of hit-and-run driving resulting in death.
