Jeff Bridges will always be The Dude.

So they basically re-invented trees?

Three can keep a secret if two of them are dead.

Have you considered a mechanical timer? After a quick search I found this model in particular. The description says that it can handle up to 96 on/off-cycles with 15 minute incements.

In your case it would be used the following way: Before you start the washing machine you need to set up the timer, so that it will switch off after the washing program cyle completed, i.e. the washing cycle lasts 2 h 30 min - you need to set the timer to 2 h 45 min (adding some tolerance)

The disadvantage would be that the timer had to be set up everytime before you use the washing machine - or you have to wash always at the same time (which probably will be impractical). Alternatively you just could unplug the power cord after using the washing machine, saving the effort to buy a timer.

I had several encounters with the same person in unrelated events, over the course of 10 years:

During my traning and education (apprenticeship) there was a dude. He was in the same group/ class, but we had nothing to do with each other, beyond knowing each others name. After my apprenticeship finished I never saw or heard from him or anyone else, since I had begun working.

After a couple of years I had to serve mandatory military service. At that time every male aged 18 or above had to go to either of the military branches (I went to the equivalent of Navy) for a couple of months. That dude from my apprenticeship was not only in the same company, but he was put into the room/parlor next to the one where I was put in.

After military service I was searching for a job and I found one. Guess who I had to work with: that dude from military service!

Some years later I was riding the train. When I got in, I saw that same dude again! We chatted for a brief time, after that he left the train.

Somehow I doubt that this will be the last time we met. It feels like the simulation got lazy and sent always the same guy!

Tthis setting is not intended to apply to websites. With this setting you can change whether the date is shown as absolute (dd.mm.yyyy) oder relative (today, yesterday,...) for your own files on your computer.

[–] nicerdicer@feddit.org 4 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (3 children)

The option is called "relative date" (as opposed to absolute date). On macos you can switch it off:

  • open Finder, go to list view
  • select very first item in hierarchy
  • click on the little triangle next to the (folder-)icon to expand but press the option key wihle doing so
  • hit "cmd" + "J" - a settings panel will open
  • there is a tick box that says "relative date" that needs to be disabled (unticked)
  • if you want to apply this settings as the new default setting for all finder windows, press the "apply as standard"-button at the bottom. All dates will show now the actual date instead of "today", "yesterday" and such.

I started learning the language in school (5th to 10th grade). I had a teacher who insisted very much on grammar which sucked while being a student, but in hindsight it turned out to be a good foundation.

With upcoming internet English became more and more a part of every day life, as there is more content in English availiabe than in my native language. In order to build up a proper vocabulary and to understand figures of speech and play on words I started to watch cartoons in English - first easy-to-understand-ones, like The Simpsons, because I knew the plot of the episodes already since they were aired dubbed on television. In the beginning I found South Park very hard to understand because they speak rather fast, but meanwhile I understand everything now.

Today I am able to speak fluenty.

Although the title is a bit of click bait, this is an interesting video about the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) that is in danger of ceasing completely, by estimation in the 2050s. This event would have a significant impact for the worlds weather patterns.

Why do our numbers look the way they look? Why do we count the way we count? These questions answered and many more in this video looking at where English got its numbering system.

Our Arabic numerals are actually Hind-Arabic numeral, and were borrowed from India by mathematicians in the Arab world. Through trade with Europe, they eventually overtook Roman numerals as the continent's dominant numerical system.

In this video we also look at the counting systems used by the ancient Egyptians, the Babylonians, the Maya and the Inca.

"How a single phone call from a student helped uncover a flaw that nearly toppled Citicorp."

The video tells the story of how the structural engineer fixes a design flaw that has been overlooked by himself, after the building has been completed.

This might be relevant to those who wish / have to use Windows 11:

This week, Microsoft made it very clear that it wants to block the popular BYPASSNRO workaround, used to skip the internet and Microsoft Account requirement checks during the Windows 11 installation OOBE (initial setup), although thankfully, the script can still be created using Registry edits.

A 7 step guide.

The Takeaway — Collapse Isn’t a Flaw, It’s the Plan

The rich are not scrambling to prevent collapse. They welcome it — because they know they’ll be the only ones left standing. While the rest of us are told to “sacrifice” and “tighten our belts,” billionaires are building bunkers, buying private islands, and hoarding resources for the dystopia they see coming.

Gute Frage. Bluesky) gibt?

I saw these glorious crab table and chairs at a furniture store years ago. They were very uncomfortable, both to look at and sit in.
