No. “R****d” is a slur against disabled people. It has an extremely dark history and people with disabilities have been advocating against it for years. It has a very, very, very dark historical connotation here in the US.
gabe
Hey uh let's please not use the r slur
Yes, but federation pulls a lot of data from an instance especially if that bot isn't configured well. Even if it is, it can cause CPU usage to skyrocket as pulling new communities can sometimes bring a lot of database activity.
The fact it requires a GPU isn't really feasible to host for me, as well as the fact idk how comfortable I am with potential legal liability it might open.
Copying here what I put in matrix: I understand, I will refederate and remove the censure as well. Sorry if this put a bit of stress on you. Just knowing you were making a good faith attempt to find an admin of some kind would have been enough tbh, it's a lot of trust and lemmy needs more granular permissions for site staff. Having it be admin or nothing isn't really helpful at all.
I’ve begun to love Tetris again so that’s something from this I guess
Yeah if there’s a group chat or something abt it id love to be present to share my concerns
If you have any kind of contact with them, please forward these concerns if you can. I really want to engage in communication here, not just permanently block them off. the dutch are chill so blocking that instance breaks my heart a bit but idk how comfortable i feel re-federating without at least a conversation here cause its really worrying :(
just to be clear i dont blame their site admin for this here but i really would feel much safer with an instance of their size having at least one other admin if they are able to or at the very least making it clear in communication they are reporting these posts to the authorities
will let y'all know what comes of that 🫡
I think it also does depend a bit whether what instance you are on due to the nature of federation. For example, your experience here on this instance is likely a bit different than another one due to the nature of federation functions. Gonna elaborate a bit below on what I mean by that below.
The large mass of communities I've personally federated in are not only reflective of my own personal interests but also what I felt would be a good fit for this instance overall vibe as well. I specifically keep an eye out in the new communities community as well as the trending communities bot for communities to potentially pull into /all.
There are some (very few, but some) that I have outright removed on our end due to sniffing out pretty clear toxicity or a general risk to "keeping things cozy". Same thing goes for content I see, since this is my primary lemmy account I do view the site and keep an eye on things as well as monitor reports closely. Since I use lemmy and browse passively I actually tend to take action against the pretty obviously bad content before they can even be reported on our end by a local user. Of course I'm not on 24/7 so some does slip thru, but for the most part the curation is pretty clear.
I also think to a degree that even though right now literature.cafe is a very small niche focused instance, a pretty significant portion of the local instance userbase here is explicitly not cis men from what I know. I had suspected that was the case for a bit but definitely noticed it be confirmed both when the site was down and when the site came back up and the brief time federation was busted. Realizing that not only made me feel affirmed in the fact of feeling I have begun to build the foundations to a good diverse community in the first place, but also a feeling of obligation to make a commitment to develop a game plan on how to maintain community safety if the trend continues. Thankfully me and Arthur are on the same page with the expectation that if we do continue to grow steadily and need to scale up the admin team, adding someone who is at least not a cisgender man to the site staff team is kind just of non-negotiable. I am extremely hopeful for local communities to become a feature as well, as I think it will be able to make more casual local instance connections feel slightly safer to participate in while better safety tools are being developed.
That discussion I had as well discussions with some others inspired this thread directly. I'm unsure what to expect from the future of lemmy as well as literature.cafe now that we are back, but I think if in a year from now this instance essentially became at the very least 50% women then I think my desire to create a safe and cozy community will have been a resounding success tbh. I do envision if do we gradually grow as an instance having to make tough calls for community safety reasons, but I do hope that lemmy will develops tools necessary to address potential concerns before tough calls arise.
This isn't going to be the last time as an instance either I plan to have this kind of conversation be held, I am hopeful that over time to have this kind of question be asked again and again to hopefully provide a space of some kind to make sure no voices are being left behind within the context of lemmys development.
Doing so much better than last week. Got my instance back up and running and was able to bring up some very much needed conversations that hopefully lemmy backend contributors have begun to take note of. Had a lovely Rosh Hashanah and am prepping for Yom Kippur soon. Was sadly unable to participate in person due to increased COVID stuff, but it was still nice to disconnect from everything and dip some apples in honey. Been actually coming out of my reading slump too :)
Hope the rest of your week is somewhat more chill, or you can at least get some rest this weekend
What do you mean that?
