They used to show history but nobody was watching it.

People are instead watching these reality TV shows, and giving eyeballs to a random dude's theories over a historian.

So really who is to blame?

The minute they started airing that crap they should've been forced to change the channel name.

That'd be like if I was a vetted historian with years of telling the facts then just started making shit up. The people that know the facts will know I'm lying out of my ass but everyone else won't even question it because of who is saying

I think they just ran out of content, tried a new thing due to the popularity of ghost shows on other channels, and it really worked well for them. Then they fucked up and made it a core part of their entire business model, rather than just a small offering to cater to the "Chariots of the Gods weirdos". I'm part of the problem, I really enjoyed the "alternative history" shows they started with, at first, but again, they went too far with a good thing.

Before all the alien crap they were known as the WWII channel. But they still had a lot of other history programs on.

The people to blame are the ones that bought it after that and turned it into absolute shit. It has nothing to do with viewers. These are the same people like (it might even be) the Discovery CEO that buys up channels and turns them all into reality TV because it's cheap af to make.

People are only watching the reality shows because that's what's on tv. It's on TV because it's cheap.

They aren't even theories. They're "asking questions." Is it possible that aliens did it? shrug commercial break

The whole ancient aliens thing is based on a book by Carl Sagan and a Russian astrophysicist. They basically described what sort of artifacts or oral traditions would be left by ancient aliens, and conclude that it probably didn't happen as we don't see them.

Von Danniken ran with the idea and wrote "Chariots of the Gods" which eventually became Stargate so I guess it wasn't too bad.

No one has been able to convince me otherwise that the whole aliens thing is pure racism towards the people of the region. "Clearly these primitive brown people couldn't have built great things thousands of years before white people."

Stargate is the shit though.

100%. Palatable racism especially aimed for people to pretend they aren't. I'm looking at you Sweary Kerry Cassidy, you antisemitic Pleidian.

He didn't lift a single brick, it was all done by his citizens/slaves.

Because consumers* aren't interested in history

Fixed that for you.
