Israel’s foreign minister threatened Wednesday that his country’s forces would strike Iran directly if the Islamic Republic launched an attack from its territory against Israel, as tensions between the rival powers flare following the killings of Iranian generals in a blast at the Iranian consulate in Syria.

“If Iran attacks from its territory, Israel will respond and attack in Iran,” Israel Katz said in a post on X in both Farsi and Hebrew.

The remarks came after Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei reiterated early Wednesday a promise to retaliate against Israel over the attack on its consulate in Damascus earlier this month.

Israel attacks Iran, then immediately tries to claim they're the victim like every other fascist group.

It's fucking disgusting Biden is willing to risk letting trump win the election because Biden won't stop supporting this genocide none of his voters want.

He cares more about Israel than America.

Iran backs proxies who attack Israel, then immediately tries to claim they're the victim like every other fascist group.

Israel is starting unecessary fights that it will insist the U.S. back them on. We need to let Israel start and finish their own wars without us.

We were there to protect them against unprovoked attacks, not to help them start wars. It's time to end this extremely expensive one-sided relationship.

Iran has 85 million people, Israel has around 10 million. I guess they're assuming big daddy Biden has their back, despite Netanyahu repeatedly ignoring him.

They don't share a border, so they will fight either completely aerial or on foreign lands like Iraq. Population is important of course but not on small scale aerial skirmishes.

[–] IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago

They don’t share a border,

I understand that but Netanyahu seems hellbent on starting a regional war. If this escalates I'm not sure that the lack of a shared border is going to mean a whole lot. It's still a small country, hiding behind the US, picking fights with much bigger nations.

A significant portion of the destruction will come from ballistic missiles.

As far as aerial combat, it will depend on who will let who fly over their respective countries. I can't see a situation where Israel and Iran go at it directly and it doesn't escalate to a regional war. I doubt it will remain between just those two countries for long.

They're going to get shut down in Gaza, so Netanyahu needs another distraction from his corruption trial.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago

I wonder if a war between Israel and Iran would distract Israel enough to slow down the Gaza genocide.

[–] Siegfried@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

I can see the winks every time they talk to each other

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world -2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

That... seems logical.

Would anyone have thought differently?

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.world 17 points 7 months ago (1 children)

No it's not, because Israel struck Iran first, and now they're trying to play the victim.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (2 children)

Sure, but it still seems logical to me that if Iran strikes Israel directly, Israel will strike Iran back. That's what literally any country would do if another country attacked them directly. I'm only surprised Iran hasn't already retaliated for Israel's attack on them in Damascus.

[–] DoomBot5@lemmy.world -1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Iran is used to having their assets destroyed in Syria by Israel. That's why

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

The only compliment I will give to the theocratic fascist regime in Tehran is that when it comes to Israel, they've shown remarkable restraint.

[–] DoomBot5@lemmy.world 0 points 7 months ago (1 children)

They really don't. Iran doesn't have the power to project their military might out to Israel. Instead they use proxies like Hamas and Hezbollah to attack Israel.

[–] Count042@lemmy.ml 3 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

Is a comment made by somebody just utterly ignorant of Iran's drone and ballistic missile program.

And before you sputter ' But ... But... Iron Dome!'

Hezbollah has already accomplished SEAD against Israel with far less then Iran has available.

Israel makes the same stupid mistake America does. Any system designed to counter something that uses ammunition 100x - 1000x more expensive then the thing it counters will always fail to saturation.

[–] DoomBot5@lemmy.world -2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

The thing about the iron dome is that there are still rockets being fired at you. Nobody considers how comfortable they would feel knowing there are thousands of rockets flying at them and their only safety mechanism is 92% successful and some dumb luck.

It's fine, because it's happening to someone else.

[–] Count042@lemmy.ml 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

Do you know what SEAD means?

I'm guessing not.

Also my above comment above is not an ideological one but you're responding like it is.

Factually, Hezbollah is an order of magnitude quantitatively superior in their combat capability to Hamas.

Similarly, Iran is an order of magnitude quantitatively superior to Hezbollah.

Hezbollah accomplished SEAD against Israel in the north.

Your 92% figure doesn't apply to shots not taken because they can't take then at all.

I would also suggest that if Israel didn't want Iran to take a shot at them, then Israel shouldn't have violated the Vienna convention and bombed Iran's embassy.

That's an insane level of provocation.

[–] DoomBot5@lemmy.world -5 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Wow, you really know very little about the regional politics, do you?

[–] Count042@lemmy.ml 2 points 7 months ago

I'd say the same for you.
