I'll pass. I am more of a connoisseur of hillfruit.

Jackfruit! These taste pretty good when ripe but can get a little bit messy to clean up. It's really sticky when fresh and soap does not clean it off. You have to scrub your hands and the machete with vegetable oil to dissolve the sticky goop and then wash them off with soap.

Nature: "Now where to grow the fruit from... the leaf... the branch... ah fuck it."

We've got one of these at my parents' place, I love it so much

I can't remember de taste now, but I really enjoyed these as a kid. There were many in my backyard. Thanks for the nostalgia!

Is that one of those smelly durian fruits?

[–] flying_gel@lemmy.world 16 points 7 months ago

The spikes are too small, looks much more like a jackfruit.

[–] HessiaNerd@lemmy.world 6 points 7 months ago (4 children)

No. Definitely tastier. At least the fruit part. There is a different part that is more fleshy that is less tasty. It's used as a pulled pork substitute in vegan dishes.

Jackfruit pulled pork is damn good.

Maybe I haven't found a good recipe yet. I've used canned jackfruit and it just tastes like heartburn and bile. The ripe stuff is good tho...

Controversial statement that jackfruit is tastier than durian :D. I guess I haven’t found the good tasting part of jackfruit yet.

If you have not had banana and jackfruit Turon you are sadly deprived.

[–] flower3@feddit.de 1 points 7 months ago

Thanks! Thats the kind of suggestion I was looking for. I will try that!

I love both jackfruit and durian, but they are very different flavours.

[–] nandeEbisu@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

Are you eating ripe or young jackfruit? Young jackfruit is what's often used as a meat substitute, ripe jackfruit is sweet and has a unique flavor.

Doesn't durian smell like shit but taste great? Or is that just propaganda to fool tourists into trying it? (I haven't had the pleasure...)

[–] Hadriscus@lemm.ee 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

In my experience it both smells and tastes like shit

[–] JohnnyCanuck@lemmy.ca 1 points 7 months ago

Good to know!

[–] poplargrove@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

It does smell a little funny but the taste and texture makes up for it. Especially as part of this desert (durian pulut) that comes with sticky rice and a kind of syrup.

[–] flying_sheep@lemmy.ml 1 points 7 months ago

Tastes amazingly complex. Can be overwhelming, but if you like things like wine, whiskey, cheese, and chutneys, you'll love it.

It tastes like some kind cheesy fruity onion chutney. Sweet and rich.

[–] fedev@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

No, durians have big spikes. Between the spikes and the smell, durians shout not to be eaten, but do we listen?
