Whatever comes from the carrier. No reason to have yet another company have access to that

You use 3rd party voicemail apps? What even is a voicemail app, isn't it just a number you call with your regular phone app?

I need the transcription, it's hard for me to hear voicemails most of the time

iPhone transcribes in its default app

This. I have turned it off, so I don't need to deal with spoken messages.

I've been using Google Voice for years. Sign up for a free number and forward voicemails to the Google number. It transcribes and allows me to keep all my voicemails no matter which carrier I switch to and it's 100% free. The only thing I wish they still had was custom greetings depending on who calls.

As with anything Google, I wouldn't use the phrase "100% free" you are paying with your privacy. Google isn't transcribing your voicemails just for you, they add that data to their collection and with the AI revolution it's more valuable to them than ever.

This is true. Though, I'm already using a Pixel, so they're already reading all my messages, emails, seeing my photos, etc. I would expect any other voicemail service could/would do the same.

I use google voice to completely ignore my voicemail.

There are….voicemail apps??

[–] acetanilide@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Yep! I'm currently using a horrible one (Voxist) which also sends data to facebook. So I'm trying to find an alternative but judging by the responses thus far i may just have to pay my carrier for the transcription.

I think I use voicemail maybe once a year. I’ll just use whatever is the default
