Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

I’ve never understood why people get earrings, despite them often being unattractive.

Firstly: wow, an actual unpopular opinion!

Secondly: I will go so far as to say absolutely tooooons of people wear earrings that I personally find extremely silly, unfashionable, or outright gross.

Sorry ear plug people. They look goofy when theyre in and they look horrifying when theyre out.

Probably this opinion of mine comes from knowing a person who managed to get their ... ear loop? caught on something and tear apart.

Also: I think its child abuse to force a 3 to 9 year old to get their ears pierced.

I used to date a person who worked at a Claire's... and they would tell me that they would often, as in multiple times a week, have a family of recent immigrants from... India? Bangladesh? ... come into the store, and they would have to physically restrain a screaming obviously unwilling child to get their ears pierced.

Anyway: I think it is too far to agree that earrings in general are just bad all the time, but there are lots of cases where theyre done poorly.

The fools, they should have told that child from the day they were born that they couldn't have pierced ears until they were at least 12. The kid would start wheedling for it at 6 and they could "give in" at 8. The child would still cry after the first ear, but would sit still and say thank you afterwards.

Here it's normal to do it to your toddler.

[–] NotAtWork@startrek.website 7 points 6 months ago (2 children)

In America it's "normal" to cut off part of your kid's dick, doesn't make it right.

Hey this guy has an unpopular opinion! Gonna upvote you and tell you you're wrong

[–] stembolts@programming.dev 5 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Yea, I love all piercings and have always thought they were either cute or a good conversation piece.

Ear, nose, lip, tongue, brow, whatever. Even big gauges are interesting looking and wouldn't stop me from flirting with someone.

I just think its neat.

Different people find different things attractive, as surprising as it is.

How oddly worded… I understand that this is “unpopularopinion”, but you say “despite them often being unattractive” as if it’s a fact they’re unattractive

[–] vexikron@lemmy.zip 13 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Contextually this is a ... board? Sublemmy?... whatever, the context is obviously opinions, it completely makes sense that in an opinion ... zone... someone would state their opinion frankly or cavalierly.

[–] KoboldCoterie@pawb.social 23 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Contextually this is a … board? Sublemmy?..

"Community" is the accepted term... that's why the link to them is labeled 'Communities' and why it's /c/. (On kbin, they're Magazines, but kbin is the black sheep.)

Difference between starting an opinion and making a leading statement.

Manipulative people don't even realize they're doing it.

^ example of a leading statement, not an opinion.

[–] Starkstruck@lemmy.world 30 points 6 months ago

Finally an actually unpopular opinion lol

[–] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 30 points 6 months ago (2 children)

I don't get piercings in general tbh.

Which is ironic because I have tattoos.

Something about just jamming something in your body and leaving it there just seems fuckin weird to me.

Again I get the irony considering I have tattoos ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[–] Thassodar@lemm.ee 8 points 6 months ago (1 children)

See I have no tattoos or piercings, and I find adding permanent art to myself fuckin weird. Different strokes for different folks.

[–] FilterItOut@thelemmy.club 3 points 6 months ago

The permanent part is what drives me nuts. I can't settle on a color for any of my stuff day-to-day. I would love to have walls, appliances, clothes, etc. all be able to change color at a whim. I would be horrified by any tattoo I had 25% of the time I had it, I guarantee.

[–] squeakycat@lemmy.ml 5 points 6 months ago

Ha, so you prefer the jabs to be an in and out affair instead of a permanent one 😛

[–] neo2478@sh.itjust.works 18 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I don’t know, my wife’s Lego minifig head earrings or dinosaur earrings, where half the dinosaur is in front of the lobe and half behind are pretty legit.

[–] AnarchistArtificer@slrpnk.net 5 points 6 months ago

Your comment reminded me of this awesome person who made some earrings you can play DOOM on: https://www.gamesradar.com/yes-you-can-play-doom-on-these-earrings/ Creative people can do cool stuff

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 18 points 6 months ago (4 children)

Eh, I’m not a fan of lipstick on women. There is nothing inherently wrong with either. It’s all a matter of personal taste.

[–] iegod@lemm.ee 4 points 6 months ago

Red lipstick in particular. It makes everyone look like a clown. 🤡

[–] gramie@lemmy.ca 2 points 6 months ago

I find makeup in general, and in fact hair colouring, mousse, etc. not attractive. I'm not saying it's unattractive, but it makes me think, "why would you do that?"

I suspect it's related to probably being on the spectrum. I find it difficult enough to understand people's unspoken thoughts and emotions, without all the distraction and camouflage.

I think they can look attractive or nice on women and men. Jewelry (and makeup) can certainly improve how people look and therefore feel about themselves. The right amount is very subjective of course. As long as you like your mirror image, it’s good. Personally I find all of that impractical and my „jewelry“ is a nice beard instead.

[–] DestroyerOfWorlds@sh.itjust.works 15 points 6 months ago (3 children)

went to a mexican back yard party. loud as fuck mariachi band, fun as hell. did some tequila shots, ate tacos, and danced. looked around and there were people dancing with babies in their arms. the babies had pierced ears. also, you could just pass the babies around apparantly.

[–] EssentialCoffee@midwest.social 5 points 6 months ago

As an American from the Midwest, babies with pierced ears is pretty normal. It wouldn't really get any looks or anything.

[–] folkrav@lemmy.ca 3 points 6 months ago

I’m in Canada. Go back not even 20-30 years ago, parents were still piercing their babies’ ears pretty regularly. It’s a pretty recent phenomenon that people started waiting for their children to grow older. Many still do it.

IMHO… A tiny 18g earring like they’re doing to babies is not particularly invasive, takes a handful of hours to stop being sore, will extremely rarely infect if done by a reputable piercer, and will naturally close back up once removed. As far as controversial practices go, earrings are amongst the most inconsequential. Permanent body altering stuff like non-medical circumcision, now this, I have an issue with…

[–] Edgarallenpwn@midwest.social 2 points 6 months ago

My wife is Colombian and her and her sister their ears pierced a few weeks into being born. Just part of the culture.

[–] folkrav@lemmy.ca 14 points 6 months ago

It’s such a subjective thing, I love the look of most piercings on both men and women lol

[–] frefi@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 6 months ago

I didn't vote because I have no opinion about this and I'm indifferent about earrings

Though I do find gauges on the nostril or below the lip to be off-putting

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 9 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Indifferent on earrings. Can always take them out when you're bored of the look.

Ear gauges look fucking awful though.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 4 points 6 months ago

It's those nose rings that go through that middle part between the nostrils like a cartoon bull that I don't like. I just imagine them being caked with snot all the time.

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 8 points 6 months ago (3 children)

Ear rings look uncomfortable to wear. Isn't it annoying having them jiggling around on your ears.

[–] PrincessLeiasCat@sh.itjust.works 5 points 6 months ago (3 children)

Not really, depending on the earrings. Personally I find a nice comfy pair of smaller hoops, usually, that I can comfortably shower and sleep with. I’ll wear those until I get tired of them and then find something else.

I’ve got small gauges, I just don’t feel them at all. I could see more dangling jewelry being kind of irritating…

Where are you from? How old are you?

[–] Shirasho@lemmings.world 5 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Some earrings look incredible and some look...artistic, putting it nicely. Like with clothes, clothes that look good on one person do not look good on everyone. Of course there is also personal preference.

When it comes down to it though I do not think many women wear earrings to make them look pretty. They wear it to give themselves confidence, and I want to encourage and support this behavior whenever possible, even if it goes against my personal aesthetic (that is not to say I dislike earrings - this mostly applies to tattoos for me).

[–] The_wild_card@lemmy.ml 5 points 6 months ago

Different tastes

[–] JimmyBigSausage@lemm.ee 3 points 6 months ago

Thank you for saying it!

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 3 points 6 months ago

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What you find ugly, others find attractive. it also changes over time. You hate earrings now, you might like them 10 years from now

[–] BigTrout75@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago (7 children)

What about other pricings? Just earrings?

[–] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 2 points 6 months ago

I personally hate all piercing. Just looks wierd. But I will not judge people over it.

It also dislike jewelry in general though. Capitalist Hate me.

I'm with you when it comes to men. To each their own, but I don't like men wearing earrings. Women can usually pull them off. I have the same opinion about long hair. To all men with either long hair or earrings: you do you, it doesn't matter if I like how you look!

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

I suppose I have very traditional views on who jewelry looks good on, but ….. when I see hoop earrings, all I can think of are plastic surgeon ads I used to see on the subway, for fixing your ears after it gets caught on something.

[–] CorrodedCranium@leminal.space 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I wonder if this is an unpopular opinion. Personally I find them unpractical. They can get caught on stuff compared to things like tattoos so I've never been a fan.
