Apple cases are shit. Good thing yours is still in warranty. Take it back and they’ll replace it immediately. Warranty is a year (I literally just replaced mine). Also AppleCare covers it, so even if you’re out of warranty for the case, if your phone is in warranty you can still get it replaced.

Or, you know, buy a better case from a more reputable company.

Yes I know what community this is and that I'll just get downvoted. But if it's accepted that you have to rely on warranty because the product is bad, then why the heck would one support that demonstrably bad product?

To cut costs!

I had an iPhone X with an Apple black leather case for 4 years and it was good, now I have the iPhone 14 with an Apple purple leather case for over a year and it’s mostly lost color and became black, but the integrity is ok.

[–] circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Ok sure, I don't disagree with that. Thanks for the honest answer.

[–] Nikls94@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

But you’re right. A friend got the fine woven and it lasted 3 months.

[–] circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Ouch. But yeah, I totally get it: if it's still cheaper to just replace it a lot, that's valid. Either people not buying it or people replacing it a lot (for free) should hypothetically have the same effect for Apple.

Edit: unless the cost of the Apple case up front is significantly higher than other options! In which case the math may not work out cleanly. And of course, the time taken for the warranty stuff = money.

[–] tyler@programming.dev 1 points 9 months ago

Sorry I’m just saying that if you spent the crazy amount of money on the case, you probably want to get some use out of it before moving on to a different case. At least that’s what I thought. The Apple case is shit, but I’m going to keep taking it in for warranty if it keeps breaking at least until I’ve gotten like two years out of it.

[–] MeanEYE@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago

Inside of EU it has to be 2 years.

That’s why I just get those $12 generic clear phone cases with free screen protectors on amazon. My current case is 3 years old and looks perfectly fine.

Oh just get a Spigen and stop settling for garbage. They're cheap and handle anything you throw at them.

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 10 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I always get Spigen. Low cost, lasts forever. Highly recommend.

[–] GrammatonCleric@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Thanks for the spelling correction 😉

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 2 points 9 months ago

Dude I had to look it up from my Amazon history, haha.

[–] jvrava9@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 9 months ago

Incipio cases are nice aswell

[–] Nikls94@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Wrong wording, correct would be:

They’re cheap and handle anything you throw them at.

[–] M500@lemmy.ml 2 points 9 months ago

I wouldn’t call those $12 cases garbage. My case is $8 and it’s really high quality. It’s really slim but slightly raised on the corners by like 1mm for a little extra protection.

[–] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 8 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Is used to like the leather cases that these things replaced. These things are such a downgrade.

[–] Telodzrum@lemmy.world 5 points 9 months ago

Both Bullstrap and Ryan London do a leather case that's higher quality and more durable than the first-party Apple cases ever were.

[–] rebelsimile@sh.itjust.works 3 points 9 months ago

I had a genuine Apple leather case for an iPhone XS that I got maybe two years ago on step discount. I expected it to age nicely but it just got weird bumps and pocks on the edges.

[–] ULS@lemmy.ml 1 points 9 months ago

Function over flashy

[–] qwertyqwertyqwerty@lemmy.one 7 points 9 months ago

I think between my family and I, we have purchased three Apple cases over the years. All three didn't survive their first year. Apple cases are a terrible investment. They are expensive, don't protect your screen, and aren't durable. They start to look like crap over time too.

mine to, Im really disappointed.

I’ve been using mine since launch day and I’m amazed by how good it still looks. I thought it would age very poorly. I guess mileage varies.

[–] elboomy@feddit.de 2 points 9 months ago

Yeah, I’ve been using mine since launch and it looks fine, too, but I carry it in my pocket with no other items inside. OP says it’s their wife’s phone, so maybe she’s carrying it in her purse and other items significantly increase the wear?

[–] wall_inhabiter@lemdro.id 2 points 9 months ago

Fuck everything with a material that looks like that idk if it's an adhesive problem but the Surface keyboards like that are simply the worst

[–] androidul@lemmy.ml 2 points 9 months ago

wow! Is the case really that bad?

don’t take it wrong, did your wife do anything to the case or does it just turn like that under normal circumstances?

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

I’ve got an Apple leather case from 2020 that’s still going. Edges are peeling, though, which started about a year ago max. Sounds like newer ones aren’t as good

[–] BigTrout75@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Duck tape would have worked better

[–] mythic_tartan@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

My silicone case is about 1.5 years old and the corners are starting to peel. First and last Apple case for me. I think it was $70 (cad). I feel like I should email Tim to complain.

[–] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

The silicon case in the house is several months old and is already doing the same.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 1 points 9 months ago

I have an Otterbox for my iPhone 12 Mini, after replacing the display of my old original iPhone SE three times after dropping it I decided to allways use a wallet case

[–] Nogami@lemmy.world 0 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Mine is fine. I did spray it with scotchgard though.
