Referring to himself and the Ugandans there as “we,” Walberg asked, “Whose side do we want to be on? God’s side. Not the World Bank, not the United States of America, necessarily, not the U.N. God’s side.”

So he doesn't stand with the USA? Sounds like he needs to be removed from Congress.

[–] A_A@lemmy.world 47 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Yes, ... or he needs to be removed from modern USA and stay in Uganda

[–] Seleni@lemmy.world 24 points 11 months ago (5 children)

‘The UN God’s side’? What kind of lunatic nonsense is that?

[–] SinningStromgald@lemmy.world 29 points 11 months ago

I think it's one of those funny situations where putting the periods in the abbreviation for "U.N." means no period at the end of the sentence.

Ungod, the Unmaker themself.

[–] TheRealLinga@sh.itjust.works 4 points 11 months ago

I bow to thee Ungod!! My unlord and unsavior!

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 8 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Not the UN [stop]. God's side. The dots behind the letters obscure that the sentence ended.

[–] agent_flounder@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

Along with God being capitalized wherever it appears in a sentence. E.g., it would also have been clear if it has said, "...U.N. We are on God's side."

[–] unconsciousvoidling@sh.itjust.works 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

The God of the UN of course.

[–] die444die@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

If there was a god, this guy would already be dead and roasting in hell.

[–] Kolrami@lemmy.world 13 points 11 months ago

Removed from Congress? That practically sounds like renouncing your citizenship.

Going to another country to oppose your own country is atypical.

[–] UltraMagnus0001@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

hmm, Jesus once said lest judge each other and kill them if we don't like them. Praise Be.

Walberg explicitly encouraged Uganda’s leaders to resist opposition to the law from the U.S.

Can US representative just blatantly undermine US foreign policy, or is this one of those things where it's wrong but won't be pursued in any official way?

Well, there's the the Logan Act [18 U.S.C. § 953], which on its face seems to make that sort of thing illegal:

Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

Buuuut: there appears to be no history of prosecuting people under this act despite it being enacted for 200 years, so don't expect it to be enforced

I think it was the Logan Act I was thinking of! Thanks!

Disappointing that it's never been enforced. While this scenario is not the makings of an diplomatic crisis, it seems a pretty cut and dry example of what the Logan Act seeks to block. It's a U.S. rep blatantly pushing acting against US diplomatic interests.

I think it would be utter chaos, but I'd love just a single solid year of throwing the book at obvious illegal behavior no matter how trivial. Put the fear of God in some of these morons.

[–] stringere@reddthat.com 1 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Put the --fear of God-- respect for the equal application of law in some of these morons.

[–] Bakkoda@sh.itjust.works 7 points 11 months ago

It's literally the thing we do best.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 32 points 11 months ago (2 children)

I generally oppose the death penalty, but in his case I’ll make an exception.

[–] Betch@lemmy.world 13 points 11 months ago

My thoughts exactly.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Given the context, I'm gonna ask you to follow that thought up with a hair more clarity on who you're thinking deserves the death penalty?

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

US politicians who go to other countries and campaign for vulnerable groups to be executed for things that aren’t even crimes in their home country.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Good choice. The other one would have been bad.

[–] charonn0@startrek.website 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

He wants people like me to be executed for existing. It would be rude not to reciprocate.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

The article is about a politician supporting a law that carries the death penalty for homosexuals, and I responded to a comment that said they'd support the death penalty in this case.

Which case? Evil politician supporting genocide, or merely being gay?

[–] charonn0@startrek.website 1 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

In "his" case, not "this" case.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Oh.

It's amazing how much difference one letter makes.

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 14 points 11 months ago

Cool. So naturally he's been placed under arrest for enabling human rights violations.

[–] Mamertine@lemmy.world 14 points 11 months ago (2 children)

I wonder how many male prostitutes he had sex with while there.

[–] crackajack@reddthat.com 1 points 11 months ago

You're probably not far from being correct on that one.

[–] TheJims@lemmy.world 13 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Is every Republican in congress. A slimy shit weasel? Is there at least one that isn’t a total fucking degenerate with any redeeming qualities?

[–] Rapidcreek@lemmy.world -3 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Hold on....I'm thinking

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 8 points 11 months ago

Aww, you guys! His hatred is causing him to learn about other cultures! That's so cute.

[–] Pratai@lemmy.ca 4 points 11 months ago

He should go to Sentinel Island next. They’ll welcome him with open arms there.

[–] PedroMaldonado@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

Tim Walberg...you are a damn monster.
