But it's not on the top, it's just near the top. I micro-etch the numbers in the vertices.
But then you don't have a D4 anymore; you've got a really unfair and mislabeled D8.
At least it's honest about how unfair it is.
If you can etch something into it, technically it's not a vertex.

I had a set of what I thought was long dice, turns out it's called barrel dice, like these
The d20 didn't really work, it was hard to read and took forever to stop if you let it roll. But we played MERP, which is a d100 system, so the d20 was mostly there to tinker with.
I have long d3s
I designed and modeled some rollability-optimized d4s years ago. They were based on reuleaux tetrahedra, with flat sections of the faces for numbers.
I never got further than printing them, but they rolled well.
I don't know why I'm writing this, but if anybody wants the files, let me know.

They should band together and fight the ones where you have to pick up the die to see the number it landed on.
Alternatively, what if you had a hole where all the vertices are and had a projector in the dice project the number onto the ceiling.?

You pick the side that's face down.
No, you're supposed to take the number you can't see (the one under the dice)
The bottom one has so much wasted space that could have made the numbers more clearly readable.
